INTRIGUE

When we were deciding what to call our winery we wondered; "What is it about wine that captivates us, that keeps us coming back for more, and that still interests us after all these years?"

Some people like to know where the wine comes from. Others like to know who made it or how it will change with time.  The foodies want to know what flavours they will find in their glass and how it will pair with a certain dish.

We're all intrigued about wine. It's constantly changing and evolving. That is part of the excitement and allure of winemaking.

We came together as partners out of a passion for wine.  The strength of the partnership is in the complimentary experience that each of us brings to the table.  A winemaker, an accountant, an internet entrepreneur and a business advisor.

WINES WE ARE TASTING:

I DO $19.90
"I Do" was created to be a part of those celebrations. This lightly sparkling wine offers rich aromas of peach and crisp apples - the crisp acidity of Riesling provides the structure and three red varietals bring the fresh berry character and it's pink hue.
SPECIAL TASTING ON FRIDAY MARCH 31ST

2016 RIESLING $16.90
Sweetness: 1
This 2016 Riesling offers aromas of fresh white peach and citrus. The crisp acidity delivers mouth-watering flavours of green apple, tangy lemon, and honey.

Our Riesling was grown in the "Two Wongs Make a White" vineyard in Oyama, BC. The 2016 growing season started very early, saw cooler temperatures through July, and finished with typics summer sunshine to intensify flavours.

Enjoy this well rounded Riesling with spicy butter chicken, grilled chorizo, and prawns or sushi.

2016 GEWURZTRAMINER $ 16.90
Sweetness: 1
Gewurztraminer can be spicy and slightly sweet at the same time. When perfected, this wine will deliver floral aromas and spicy flavours. Our Gewurztraminer's first sip offers ripe lychee and rose water notes, while white pepper is present at the finish.

We source our Gewurztraminer grapes in three locations: The Grapewood Guest House in Oyama, "The View" vineyard, and "Grown and Wine" vineyards in Kelowna. This vintage has a particularly long growing season, which enabled the exotic aromas and flavours of Gewurztraminer to intensify.
This wine pairs well with any spicy Indian or Asian cuisine, especially chicken satay with curry-coconut peanut sauce.

2016 SOCIAL WHITE $14.90
Sweetness: 1
 68% Riesling, 27% Gewurztraminer, 2% Muscat Canelli, 2% Kerner, and 1% Ehrenfelser
Notes of nectarine, bright lime rind, and pear on the palate. Social is perfect for any occasion, with or without food.

2016 FROSTED VINES $18.90
Sweetness: 4
Kerner, Riesling, and Ehrenfelser
While this wine is delightful to sip on its own, it will also compliment flavouorful dishes such as charcuterie with spicy sausage and sharp cheese.

LITTLE STRAW

Welcome to Little Straw Vineyards, a family-owned winery established in 1996. Our winemaker, Peter Slamka, is known for his remarkably popular white blend "Tapestry" and for producing the only Auxerrois Icewine in Canada. Our Sauvignon Blanc-done in both dry and semi-dry styles-has a growing fan-base, while our red blend "Southern Cross" is proving a hit in the wine shop.

The majority of grapes we use come from our own vineyards situated on the lower slopes of Mount Boucherie near Kelowna, British Columbia. We offer a wide range of small lot wines, with something to appeal to almost every palate. The next time you visit the Okanagan Valley, feel free to browse in our wine shop or enjoy a glass of wine with lunch in our winery lounge, the  Barrel Top Grill

WINES WE ARE TASTING:

2015 LITTLE AUXERROIS OLD VINES
This varietal Auxerrois is already so smooth and well-balanced, we can't imagine it getting any smoother. Expect aromas of honeydew and white flowers, with flavours of melon and a dash of spearmint mingling on a round, creamy palate. Off-dry and delicious, this white can be enjoyed as a sipping wine or served with mild cheeses and lightly-seasoned cuisine.

2015 PETIT PAILLE SAUV BLANC $15.90
This edition of our dry Sauvignon Blanc marks a departure from previous vintages in that there is no grassiness or herbaceousness present, nor do guava or passionfruit characters appear on the scene. This wine is driven by minerality and earthiness, with citrus and wet stone apparent on the nose, along with hints of sweet pear and pineapple. The wine is well-balanced, with a bright acidity that underscores subtle flavours of pear and grapefruit pith. The citrus and earthy character of this vintage suggests it would pair well with fresh oysters and lightly-cooked seafood.

2015 SAUVIGNON BLANC $16.90
Guava, gooseberry, and muskmelon aromas are followed on the palate by a grassy, citrus juiciness. Semi-dry with the mild acidity of a very ripe vintage, this wine can be enjoyed as a sipper or paired with shellfish, white-fleshed fish, or moderately piquant cheeses.

2015 TAPESTRY $16.90
With rose petals and pink grapefruit on the nose and palate, this is another pleasing vintage of our signature blend of five white varietals: Riesling, Auxerrois, Gewurztraminer, Siegerrebe, and Schonburger. Enjoy this wine as a summer sipper or try pairing it with spicy Asian cuisine.

2015 PINOT ROSE $17.90
This edition of our Pinot Rosé is more muscular than the 2014 vintage, with a drier, heavier palate reflecting higher alcohol and tannins and less residual sugar. The essence of ripe strawberry and cherry dominates the nose and palate, along with hints of earth and honeydew melon. Enjoy on its own or with your favourite brunch-time cuisine.

2012 PETIT PAILLE PINOT NOIR $21.90
This vintage of our Pinot Noir shows more barrel influence than the previous vintage, with obvious notes of sweet vanilla oak on the nose and palate. The tannins are somewhat firm, yet soften readily with decanting. The fruit profile is initially black cherry, followed by a long cran-raspberry and vanilla-oak finish. This dry, elegant red is best enjoyed alongside a meal-think grilled veggies and salmon, or duck magret.

2013 MARECHAL FOCH $15.90
The gamey aroma for which this French hybrid is known is apparent on the nose, along with baked fruit and earthy aromas. The tannins are mild and silky beneath a palate of off-dry earthiness reminiscent of sweet grilled beets and cranberry sauce. Zesty acidity allows this wine to pair well with hearty cuisine such as grilled meats and curries.

Rah Rah for Riesling
 Westwood Wines
BY: SAM HAUCK

When you order, 'a glass of white wine', chances are you'll be served a chardonnay, as these days, it tends to be synonymous with white wine.  However, there was a time, before the late 1970's when Riesling was THE white wine.  And for good reason: Riesling tends to pair with a wide variety of foods and has the added advantage of being well suited to aging.  (See my previous article  )

Riesling is a grape that does best in cool climate regions of the world - Germany, Austria (yes they make more than just Grüner Veltliner), Alsace and select regions of Australia.  In the United States, you'll find Riesling grown along the eastern seaboard, especially in New York and in Washington and Oregon on the west coast.  Similarly, in Canada, Riesling does very well in Ontario and in BC.

The latest BC Wine Appreciation Society event featured a blind tasting of twelve Rieslings, both local and international.   As it turned out eight were from BC and four were from around the world.

Before we began, BCWAS Brian Glaum, presented a cheque to James Iranzad from Wildebeast who was there representing the BC Hospitality Foundation.  One thousand dollars was raised at our BC Wine Chat event held during the Wine Festival

Now there are some people, who tend to think all Rieslings are sweet wines.  The fact is it all depends on the style the winemaker wants to make.  Rieslings can range from mouth puckering dry, high-acid wines all the way to luscious dessert wines and just about everything in between.  These days, most Rieslings tend to be quite dry, which why they are so versatile with food.  When you think of Riesling, think of flavours and aromas include any combination of the following - apricot, citrus, clove, floral, fruity, grapefruit, green apple, honey, lemon, lime, minerality, orange peel, passion fruit, peach, pear, pineapple, steely and toast.  Some also have a quality that sounds disgusting at first, but in proper proportions is actually a positive (really, trust me on this).  Depending on the individual, it is referred to as diesel, kerosene or petroleum.

We sat down to 12 glasses of Riesling and were led through the tasting by Fort Berens proprietor, Rolf de Bruin, who spoke of the grape's history, where it is grown in BC and its rising popularity.  This was a double blind tasting, where the bottles wrapped in paper by one team, then another crew numbers them, not knowing what they are so no one knows which wines are which until the very end.

My scores didn't vary a lot, as most of the wines were very good and showed good varietal character.  The better ones had greater precision and focus.  My top picks included: 8th Generation, St. Hubertus, Culmina, Synchromesh and Intrigue.  I also quite enjoyed the Pewsey Vale Single Estate wine from Eden Valley, Australia and the Eroica from Washington, a joint venture between Germany's Ernst Loosen and Chateau Ste. Michelle.

The group of over 70 people were asked to list their top five wines and the results were tabulated.  The results included, 8th Generation, St Hubertus, Nik Weis St Urbans-Hof and Synchromesh.

So if you are an 'acid head', a lover of these bright, fresh Rieslings, do yourself a favour and try these wines.  When you find your favourites, buy several and put at least a few away for five, ten or even twenty years and try them again.  You will be delighted.
