Artist's Gateway To The World's Top Music Makers
The Recording Fly Pack That Flies!
Ian Charbonneau of The Recording Project Teams Up With Thom Russo in Mexico For Two Stadium-Size Live Recording Dates for Iconic band Mana
Ian Charbonneau of The Recording Project with Thom Russo (top), Mana (right) with vocalist/guitarist Fher Olvera, drummer Alex Conzalez, guitarist Sergio Vallin and bassist Juan Calleros

Mana is considered one of the best-selling Latin music artists and the most successful Latin American band of all time with over 40 million records sold worldwide. Maná has earned four Grammy, and eight Latin Grammy Awards. In 2016, Maná was inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

More recently Ian Charbonneau of The Recording Project and Thom Russo teamed up to record Maná in two giant stadiums in Mexico --Foro Sol on November 12, the 75,000-capacity stadium where Jane's Addiction, The Chemical Brothers and Mars Volta have played and the 18,779-seat 3 De Marzo Stadium, on October 29 where Shakira and Justin Bieber have played.

studioexpresso met up with engineers Ian and Thom to learn about documenting large live shows and how having the right tools and experience can make things look easy and musically satisfying for the band, their crew, and the audience.

SE: This was the first time you flew your new portable Recording System or "Fly Pack" to Mexico.
I understand now you call it "the Recording Fly Pack that Flies!” What's different about it?

IC: First, I’ve never seen a 64ch input recording fly pack system with dual redundant Protools that you can so easily transport. It was quite surreal to just get up in the morning, call an Uber SUV, load 5 cases in the trunk and head to LAX airport for an international flight to Mexico. Same for checking it in as luggage on the airplane. I can admit I was a little nervous. I am still amazed at how well it all went. All the recording fly packs that I’ve come across around the world over the years are either too large or too heavy to transport on an airplane with such ease and efficiency. To my knowledge this was a first -to travel this easily with a high-quality, large channel-count recording system that offers most of everything needed to capture a stadium-size concert. Plus, it included carrying a dozen audience microphones and needed hardware. I spent a year designing and building my system with the goal of being able to to offer high-quality recording without compromising quality. My system offers far greater musical results than using a PA digital feed recording. I just can’t say enough. The Key to a great sounding recording lies in having control of your microphone preamps. Great sound requieres space.
"Loaded on a plane and straight to the venue, BOOM! We easily recorded a huge show with a huge band in a foreign country, and it was absolutely effortless…with the help of Ian, his system(S),
and his team!!"

--Thom Russo (Macy Gray, Mana, JayZ)
SE: What are some considerations that came up during the planning stage?

IC: The process is not too different from usual recording projects. Having a pretty extensive experience with portable fly pack systems helps. I had great set of tools to meticulously build my own system. My challenge here was really things like “will it fit” in the back of a SUV or will there be issues with the airline? Much of everything else was the same. Doing Live remote recording always requires good planning, being ahead of things is paramount.

SE: What was it like to work with Thom Russo and Mana?

IC: Myself, my assistant / stage A2 Todd Shaffer can both attest to working with Thom has been an absolute pleasure. Even though you say “work”, this wasn’t work. This was fun! We just did what we do best and truly enjoyed every minutes of it. I can say I won’t forget this project as we had great times, many laughs, and amazing Mexican food. Thom is a very grounded, pleasant person to work for. I can only say the same for the Mana family and crew. We’ve made some great friendship on the way.

SE: You talk about the flexibility of “The Recording Project" - what else?

IC: I think my extensive experience in Live recording both technically and logistically had a lot to offer on this project. With so many unknowns ahead....My recording system offered them the possibility to do a great recording without any compromise. Being able to also capture the energy of the audience by choosing the right audience microphone set up .... which is too often forgotten. Capturing the audience is a very important and big part of a big live concert.

SE: Were there challenges during the recording that you were able to resolve?

IC: Maybe one, we lost one of our audience mics minutes before band hit the stage. My stage A2 Todd was quickly able to trace the issue, change a cable and fix it right on time!

SE: Can you share a fun story or memory from the live dates with Mana in Mexico?

IC: This was the first project with my brand new recording fly pack. Couldn’t have been more of an “Ultimate” test from getting to the airport, checking the system as luggage on an international flight. This was no local gig where you can just run back home if you forgot something. Everything worked as planned and very smoothly. I’m very happy about that. A year in the making that resulted in great success.

SE: Thom I understand you first worked with Ian at Le Mobile. The October and November dates with Mana were in large capacity stadiums. What was behind your decision to work with Ian's portable flight pack, or his Recording Project?

TR: I had met Ian a couple months back, while using Le Mobile larger system(s) for some live recording of the legendary and iconic Mexican rock band Mana ; we first recorded them at the Forum, with their legendary “Le Mobile” truck, and also their scaled down “portable rig” ( which is actually 6-7 large 20 space racks…! Not that portable). Regardless, during those shows, I connected with Ian and learned how enormously experienced and professional he was in the live recording environment, along with being so easy to work with and of course, having the right equipment. I made a mental note to always reach out to him with any live recording projects that I may have to produce. Then, some months later Mana reached out to me again to record some huge concerts that they had scheduled again ( Specifically a “return to home” show in Guadalajara for 25000 fans, and then the historic show last week in Mex City at Foro Sol — for 65000!). The band wanted these documented, and so we made it happen… and my first call was to Ian with his incredible “Recording Project” flight pack… because it TRULY is exactly that: in 5 small flight cases, Ian has a compact, 64 input Pro Tools system ( which is of course duplicated for the backup that runs in tandem…). Loaded on a plane and straight to the venue, BOOM! We easily recorded a huge show with a huge band in a foreign country, and it was absolutely effortless…with the help of Ian, his system(S), and his team!!

SE: You have impressive engineering credits (Macy Gray, Enrique Iglesias, JayZ) and have your own studio and now also doing live, and writing for film. How long have you worked with Mana and what are the requirements for recording/mixing their current shows?

TR: Oh gosh, thnx yes, I’ve been in this business for a very long while, working in some many different music styles, and working in so many different aspects of it— … Not to tell my life and career story, but I started w a music conservatory background and then branched into some very deep engineering experience, which eventually lead to mentoring under some amazing producers (including working for Babyface for a long while in the 90s, and then Rick Rubin for many years, etc); and then into my own producing things… its been a blast!!
As far as Mana goes, I met them like 15 years ago and have done 3 albums with them and many, many live shows… Requirement wise, its just about capturing their live performances (like any live band); but the exciting part with them is that it’s the old-school mentality of LIVE!! They really are a “bands” band, in that they go out there, and play together, live, and do a real show… as we all know, nowadays that doesn’t happen very often anymore…- with the tendency for a lot of playback, etc. that’s what makes it so much fun to capture and document these shows!

SE: What was your experience working with Ian and his Recording Project. What can you say about him and the overall results with his new fly pack, The Recording Project?

TR: I can’t rave enough about my experience working with Ian and the Recording Project…. Its effortless, so easy, and completely professional!!

SE: Can you share a fun story or memory from the recent live recordings dates with Mana?

TR: Ha! Well it was all fun, honestly, especially working down in Mexico, where the food is simply UNREAL!! But also, WOW, the memory of standing on the stage looking over 65000 people before the show, all gathered together with the same purpose of enjoying some fantastic music and collectively “lifting” up through the music and sound, WOW— it is quite an incredibly intense feeling, for sure!!
Also… there’s one funny story that was playing out that may make folks chuckle !! Here’s the scenario: Since we were recording 2 shows that were only about 10 days apart (one in Guadalajara, one in Mexico City), we decided that it was probably easiest and best to leave all the equipment down in Mexico with the Mana team and with their backline equipment (which of course is an enormous amount of gear). Now I’ve known the Mana crew guys forever, and they have a GREAT sense of humor-- always looking for a good laugh and always trying to “punk” someone (road life can get monotonous!!)… So midway through the break between the concerts, we started joking on a text thread that the crew and I had effectively sold all of the Recording Project's equipment, shipped it to Colombia, and they and I were going to split the profits—Oh, and of course collect the insurance! ;)) HA!!!!  Honestly though, the joke didn’t last too long, because of course Ian’s so professional and organized, he had I-tags on everything single piece of gear and on each flight case; so there wasn’t a moment he didn’t know where they were, anywhere in the world !! ;)…. well, we tried though!! ;)

Mana's current lineup consists of vocalist/guitarist Fher Olvera, drummer Alex Conzalez, guitarist Sergio Vallin and bassist Juan Calleros. The band starts their select US dates in Los Angeles on February 10, 2023 Tix here

In My Head By Annika Rose Trending

An early adopter of web3, Annika Rose has embraced audio NFTs.
After successfully launching her single Bruises as a limited collection of 25 audio NFTs on the sound.xyz platform last month. She did a similar release with her catchy new single In My Head, produced by Alex Salibian (Harry Styles) exclusively releasing 50 audio NFTs which sold-out quickly and raised 2.5 ETH equivalent of $1,288. "I wrote “In My Head” after beating myself up for having the most outlandish thoughts. humans think over 17,000 thoughts a day, on average, and often times we let those narratives drive us to some pretty insane beliefs. your own mind can be your biggest enemy," says Rose. Now she can take her outlandish thoughts to the bank!

THE ATC SCS70 PRO IS HERE!
AN ACTIVE SUBWOOFER WITH EXCEPTIONAL LOW-FREQUENCY DETAIL AND FLEXIBLE SETTINGS

TransAudio Group, U.S. distributer of the finest professional recording equipment in the world, is pleased to announce the new ATC SCS70 Pro, a compact, ultra-high performance subwoofer using ATC’s first, in-house-designed and built sub driver.

Designed by Billy Woodman and his team of engineers, this new 12-inch sub driver delivers the kind of honest and detailed low-frequency information that professionals have come to expect from ATC.
“Engineers are dealing with greater and greater demand from artists for more sub output and they need accuracy down low. Subwoofers can be a source of distortion, making the mixing or mastering process a guessing game. Now an ATC system, complete with the one or two SCS70 subs, can deliver full bandwidth audio for any genre, enabling superior translation on any system it gets played on, from ear buds to home hi-fi to clubs and everything in-between. Other subwoofers rely on EQ and poorly implemented ports, transmission lines or passive radiators to boost low end and make their subs sound impressive," says Brad Lunde

AURATONE's 1st -EVER *ACTIVE*5C SUPER SOUND CUBE

The unmistakable six-inch Auratone 5C Sound Cubes atop meter bridges, have guided engineers down the narrow and rocky path to mid-range nirvana. Indeed, its involvement in innumerable hits earned the 5C Sound Cube a NAMM TEC Hall of Fame Award in 2016.

In celebration of its 50th anniversary, Auratone and its US distributor, TransAudio Group, introduced the first-ever Active 5C at NAMM 2022, June 3-5 in Anaheim, CA. The mono amplifier is designed and built in Europe in collaboration with the famous hardware manufacturer, Bettermaker. A careful R&D process has been implemented to maintain the original characteristics of the 5C, utilizing the same amplifier design from the NAMM TEC Award winning A2-30 amplifier.

“We were happy to get boutique Polish manufacturer Bettermaker together with Alex Jacobsen, owner, and grandson of founder Jack Wilson, for the perfectly matched A2-30 amplifier. Now, the two companies have collaborated to get a mono amplifier that contains the guts and soul of the A2-30 into each chassis for the active version,” says Brad Lunde, founder, and president of TransAudio Group. Like the other 5C variants, the Auratone Active 5C is made in the USA. It delivers 50W into its internal 8ohm load via a balanced combo XLR/TRS input. Like the passive version, it reproduces between 80 and 15,000 Hz via a 4.5inch driver with a signal to noise ratio in excess of 100dB. In addition to an input, the rear of the box provides an on/off switch and power LED. The active 5C has Integrated overcurrent, overheated, and short protection in the rare event of electrical trouble.

American Contemporary Ballet's Nutcracker
An Immersive Audience Experience For All Five Senses and Ages

No, it's not your grandmother’s Nutcracker Ballet!
American Contemporary Ballet’s (ACB) production of the holiday season favorite, under the direction of Lincoln Jones, aims to charm and enchant ages 5 to 95. To start, it’s an immersive audience experience featuring a chamber-size live orchestra playing selections from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker suit with new arrangements by James and Kathy McMillen.
Your adventure begins when you enter the 28th floor of 2Cal Los Angeles downtown skyscraper. It’s little like walking into a Jean-Paul Sartre play, No Exit.
Attendees find themselves trapped together in a waiting room with an attractive receptionist who keeps a straight face while offering little to no clues to the location of the theater. Finally, someone notices a new sign on another door: “This One Here”! The door opens and the scene quickly changes from the grey office floors and beige walls into a winter wonderland--frosted windows and snow-covered floors are everywhere. There's a beautiful girl with her pink pom pom beanie roller skating on what appears to be an ice floor. The crew is rushing life-size dolls holding big empty trays on dollies in and out of site, while attendees are searching for their seats. Suddenly the lights dim and expose the city lights of downtown's spectacular views!
Enters Waltz of The Snowflakes with Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy, Coffee, Tea, Mother Ginger, and Waltz of The Flowers follow. During short intermissions, the life-size dolls who have magically come to life bring their trays filled with marzipan and sweets to the audience. The dancers move to the inspired new interpretation of the classic by Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Musicians include: piano (Morgan Jones), Cello (Allan Hon, , flute (Emma McCartney), clarinet (Sergio Coelho), strings (Xenia Deviakina-Loh, Paige Towsey-Grishaw, viola (Andrew Towsey-Grishaw) and voices(Anastasia Malliaras, Emma Rocheleau). The Finale follows the Grand Pas De Deux with principal dancers.
A big nudge for the creative costumes and fabrics (white lame, Iridescent Organza in bright colors) and modern and witty designs by Ruoxuan Li and Yasamin Sarabipour.
ACB is now in its 11th season in L.A. with over 70 sold-out shows each year. And that’s a good news for Angelina s who can celebrate world-class ballet made for today's audiences right in our backyard. LA, we love it!
Opening night on November 26 was magical. Do yourselves a favor and take someone you love to ACB's production of Nutcracker. It's a great way to close the “post pandemic year" and get into the holiday mood. Once you’ve entered The Nutcracker Suite, you may not want to go home!

NOVEMBER 25 - DECEMBER 24, 2022
Performances followed by an artist reception with live music.

PInk Blends Wine With New Music
Two Wolf Label And New Album TrustFall Due Out 2023
Regarded as the "most trailblazing artist" of her pop generation, singer, songwriter, and actress PInk (nee Alecia Beth Moore Hart) introduces her new wine label, TwoWolves just in-time for the holidays!
She has sold over 40 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide.
Her passion for wines began when she left the city and headed to an organic vineyard in Santa Barbara County with her young daughter. She signed up for classes at Allan Hancock College, and started making wine in her garage. "Pruning is one of my favorite things to do in the world, and the best way to listen to a new album, start to finish," says Pink who loves the combination of art, nature, the seasons, the moon, chemistry and the belief that anything is possible. Enter Two Wolve Wines. Watch her sing Cover Me In Sunshine with her daughter, Willow Sage Hart recorded in 2021 for RCA here

She directed her official video for the first single from her new album Trustfall: Never Gonna Not Dance Again which takes place in a grocery store that turns into a dance party with a chorus reminiscent of ABBA. The attitude is still very much PINK. Pre Order Pink's new album Trustfall available everywhere February 17th, 2023. Order the limited Pink Vinyl here

Choose from the following Two Wolf wine selections

Two Wolf Cab Franc (Vintage 2019) offers hints of fresh pine, oregano, cranberry, concentrated raspberries, violets, chamomile, and black peppercorn. The tannins are alive and well, mouthcoating and powdery. The length and persistence here is unquestionable. Pair with mushroom lasagna, or roasted turbot with porcini, potato, and aged marrow (a la Chef Kim Alter at Nightbird).

Cab Sauvignon (2019) Dusty leather, camphor, cinnamon, blackberries, green spice, and the sweet scent of a cigar box. So much fruit in the mouth, balanced with juicy acid and tannins that grip and then ease.

Petit Verdot Fresh mint, smoky shiso leaf, intense black fruit, rose and wisteria, spicy clove, and citrus peel. There’s an earthy, chalky loveliness to this wine, but make no mistake… She will dominate you. I would definitely eat food with this wine. Maybe some green curry, udon, pasta arrabbiata, with Edith Piaf playing in the background. Bon Appétit!

RIP Christine Mcvie
7.12.1943 – 11.30.2022

We've come to love Fleetwood Mac songs over decades with soulful classics like You Make Loving Fun, Little Lies, and Don’t Stop, penned by Christine McVie, the British-born Fleetwood Mac contralto and composer who passed away at age 79 on November 30.

While studying at the Moseley School of Art (worked as a window dresser), she befriended various members of Britain’s emerging blues scene and, in her 20s, joined the band Chicken Shack as a singer and piano player. Among the rival bands she admired was Fleetwood Mac, which then featured the talents of blues guitarist Peter Green along with the rhythm section of Fleetwood and McVie. By 1970, she had joined the group and married John McVie.
As a member of Fleetwood Mac, McVie was inducted into the Rock and Roll hall of Fame and received the Brit Award for Outstanding contribution to Music in 1998.

Her new album, Songbird (Orchestral Version)," is taken from her first solo music compilation and released on Rhino Records. It's nominated in the 2023 Grammys for Best Arrangements by Vince Mendoza, Instruments and Vocals category. It's remixed with additional overdubs by Glyn Johns. This version includes Christine's original vocals with the piano removed and orchestra arrangements added. The booklet includes a January 2022 BBC interview plus production details for each song. Now a beautiful tribute to her life and music.
