from the ptsa president

Throughout the month of May, PTAs show their appreciation to teachers and school staff. Last week, the PTSA honored our School Office Professionals, Librarians, Principal and Assistant Principals, and Nurses with gestures of gratitude, including a wonderful lunch from Sweetleaf. Next Friday, the PTSA will celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, and thank all the teachers who inspire and motivate our students with an appreciation lunch hosted by the Hospitality Committee. If you can volunteer at next week’s luncheon or bring a dessert, sign-up using the following links:

In addition, if your student’s teacher has done something that you appreciate, please take the time to send them an email or note expressing your thanks.

The PTSA Executive Committee Officers for the 2024-2025 school year were officially voted into office during our final General membership meeting on Wednesday. Congratulations to:

President - Bonnie Myshrall

VP of School Support - Margaret Brown

VP of Volunteer Management - Sara Koenig

VP of Membership & Fundraising - Melissa Schwartz

VP of Communications - Kristi Grgeta

Treasurer - Mary Lee

Secretary - Karen Hall

Finally, thank you to Mocha Dyrud, Christina Maxwell, and Brenda Beeland for planning and coordinating Prom 2024! It was a spectacular evening. The kids enjoyed the music and made wonderful memories. Thank you to all the parents who helped with the event!

Reminder: there is no school tomorrow. Enjoy the long weekend!

ap exam proctors needed!

AP testing begins next week! Student Services urgently needs parent volunteers to help in administering AP testing from May 6-17. You will be paired with a knowledgeable member of the Student Services team and only be tasked with assisting in handing out and collecting materials and supervising the test. Test proctoring runs about 4 hours per test, and the exams generally begin at 8 am and 12 pm.

You can see how AP tests are administered and get to know some of our student services staff better. The only rule is that you can’t proctor a test your student is taking. Sign up here

Because of the vast amount of testing done in the building, every proctor is greatly appreciated!

model judiciary club: Two Langley student teams from the Model Judiciary Club (Jacob and Jordan Glover, Tanishka Bagade and Sanika Meka) were selected by the Virginia Bar Association and the YMCA after a regional competition as part of the Model Judiciary Program for Northern Virginia to participate in a state-wide moot court competition. Student teams from 14 public and private Virginia high schools convened at the Virginia State Supreme Court in Richmond on Apr 23 for the event. Students presented their appellate arguments to five VA Supreme Court Justices. Special congratulations to Jacob and Jordan Glover, who won their round against tough competition from Norview HS from Norfolk, Virginia.

angp volunteers needed

ANGP will be on Tues, Jun 3 from 10:30 pm – June 4 at 4 am at Spring Hill Recreation Center. This year marks the 36th annual Langley HS All-Night Graduation Party (ANGP) for graduating seniors! Our goal is to reduce the risk of teen drinking and drug use on graduation night, saving the lives of our teens and other drivers. ANGP provides our graduates with a fun, safe, and alcohol and drug-free evening to celebrate their success!

ANGP takes a village of volunteers and each class serves a traditional role as outlined below:

Senior parents, it is not possible to have an All Night Grad Party without your help! Senior parents help with check-in/out, food, games, prizes, casino, and security.

Junior class parents traditionally help with clean-up following ANGP! This is a great way to help the senior class parents so they can have the energy to stay up all night to run the party.

Sophomore class parent volunteers traditionally help with set-up and decorating for ANGP! You all get the fun part in making the venue festive!

Freshman parents, the freshman class is responsible for moving supplies from Langley (and picking up other things around McLean and Great Falls) to Spring Hill Rec Center in McLean. Then the items need to be placed throughout the venue.

Mark your calendars to support this year’s senior class as we will want our underclass parents to volunteer for us when it’s our turn! Questions? Contact Kristi Grgeta at kristi@grgeta.com. More details and volunteer sign up links will be coming soon.

saxons, did you know ...

As we navigate the unknown world of AI there is a disturbing new phenomenon involving AI generated fake nude pictures. According to the New York Times, students use widely available nudification apps to transform pictures of their classmates fully clothed into nude or sexually explicit pictures. These altered images are called “deepfakes” or “deepnudes.” These pictures can then be inappropriately passed around causing extreme humiliation and harm to mental health.
