Mowing grass - Priceless ....

This picture is of an Army soldier in Iraq with his tiny 'plot' of grass in front of his tent.
It's heartwarming!  Here is a soldier in Iraq, stationed in a big sand box.

He asked his wife to send him dirt (U.S. soil), fertilizer, and some grass seed so that he can have the sweet aroma, and feel the grass grow beneath his feet.  When the men of the squadron have a mission that they are going on, they take turns walking through the grass and the American soil -- to bring them good luck.
Of all the things he could have asked his wife to send to him from home... he asked for American soil. WOW.

If you notice, he is even cutting the grass with a pair of scissors.  Sometimes we are in such a hurry that we don't stop and think about the little things that we take for granted.

Upon receiving this, say a little prayer for our soldiers that give and give (and give up) so unselfishly for us.

Hello Music Fans--
The Silky Satin Lounge, in conjunction with the University
of Bayou St John, is pleased to announce a short 2017
winter six-part House Concert Series, on Sundays at 7 PM
beginning this week January 8th featuring B Scott and Lisa Kelly

This Sunday will break the mold a little by featuring Tom duetting
or trio-etting with a husband-wife team from Jacksonville, Fla.
Trumpeter JB Scott was a fellow bandmate of mine on the Dukes
of Dixieland for two years from 1990-92, a tenure highlighted by
an appearance at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. He is
a polyglot horn man who can play from the earliest styles to
Freddie Hubbard and beyond. And he is a lot of fun to play with.
He has taught jazz at the University of North Florida for almost 20 years.

His wife, Lisa Kelly, is a similarly well-versed singer, a sometime
UNF instructor and one of those singers who lives and breathes
the music. She scats about as well as anyone I've worked with
the chemistry with JB is palpable.  I hope you can make it!

625 Hagan, NOLA 70119, one block downtown from the Parkway
Bakery.  $10 suggested donation. BYOB; and food is always welcomed.
Please no posting of this event on social media!!

NEW ORLEANS -  the City of New Orleans issued a traffic advisory for Central City. Beginning today, Jackson Avenue between St. Charles and S. Claiborne Avenues will temporarily close one travel lane for approximately two weeks. The City's Department of Public Works contractor, Hard Rock Construction, LLC, will begin placing new asphalt as part of the Jackson Avenue Infrastructure Improvements Project.

  •  Jan. 8, 2017, and lasting until Monday, Jan. 9, river-bound traffic on Jackson Avenue will be detoured to Carondelet Street  (See attached map for full detour).
  • Beginning, Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2017 and lasting until Monday, Jan. 16, lake-bound traffic on Jackson Avenue will be detoured to St. Charles Avenue (See attached map for full detour).

The scope of work includes removing and replacing the top three inches of asphalt pavement. The Community Development Block Grant is funding this project.

In general, construction crews will be working from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Work on the weekends is not anticipated; however, inclement weather may alter the project schedule. Residents are reminded to use caution when driving, bicycling and walking near construction sites.

JANUARY 8 - NATIONAL WINTER SKIN RELIEF DAY - NATIONAL ENGLISH TOFFEE DAY  - NATIONAL BUBBLE BATH DAY - NATIONAL ARGYLE DAY - NATIONAL SUNDAY SUPPER DAY - NATIONAL JOYGERM DAY

National Winter Skin Relief Day - January 8
NATIONAL WINTER SKIN RELIEF DAY
As winter kicks into high gear, National Winter Skin Relief Day on January 8 reminds us of all the ways we can keep our skin from withering under the harshest of elements.
The dropping temperatures outside and rising thermostats inside sap the amount of moisture in the air. Our skin is first to notice.
Joshua Zeichner MD, Director of Cosmetic & Clinical Research at The Mount Sinai Hospital, makes a few recommendations to help us keep our skin hydrated through the winter. When the chill sets in, avoid the temptation to take those long, hot showers. The heat strips skin of its natural oils (called ceramides) and causes inflammation. Causing the skin cells to swell, when they dry they become loose like poorly grouted tiles and crack.
Instead, take shorter, lukewarm showers and use gentle cleansers. Harsh soaps with surfactants and claims of pH balance can be harsh on the skin. And don't scrub! Be tender and let the water and lather do the work.

National English Toffee Day - January 8
NATIONAL ENGLISH TOFFEE DAY
Recognized by the National Confectioners Associations and celebrated by millions across the country, January 8th of each year is National English Toffee Day. A popular variant of the original toffee, in the United States "English toffee" is a buttery confection topped with almonds.  It's made by caramelizing sugar with butter and can be both hardened or chewy.  The Heath bar is a type of candy bar that is made with an English toffee core.

National Bubble Bath Day - January 8
NATIONAL BUBBLE BATH DAY
On a cold winters day, relaxing in a nice warm/hot bubble bath sounds like the perfect way to commemorate National Bubble Bath Day, which is celebrated annually on January 8th.
The bubbles on top of the water (also known as foam bath or foaming bath) insulate the bath water, keeping it warmer for a longer period of time.
  • Children find bubble baths fun and enjoy playing with the bubbles which entice them to take their baths.
  • Some bubble bath, bath foam or foaming bath serves a dual purpose and can also be used as to wash skin or hair.
  • Bath foam preparations may be in the form of a liquid, gel, or as solids in the form of powders, grains, or tablets.
According to the AC Nielsen Data, Mr. Bubble is the #1 brand of bath products in the United States and in 2011 it celebrated its 50th birthday.  Mr. Bubble is a brand of bath product made by The Village Company.

National Argyle Day - January 8
NATIONAL ARGYLE DAY
Derived from the tartan of Clan Campbell, of Argyll in western Scotland, the pattern used for kilts and plaids and from the patterned socks (known as a tartan hose) worn by Scottish Highlanders since at least the 17th century, is recognized and honored each year on January 8th on National Argyle Day.
Occasionally you may find argyle spelled argyll.
Most commonly referred to the overall pattern made of diamonds or lozenges, the word argyle sometimes indicates a single diamond in the design.  Layers of overlapping motifs are found in most argyle layouts adding a sense of three-dimensionality, movement and texture. Typically in the pattern, there is an overlay of intercrossing diagonal lines on solid diamonds. The design's popularity was helped by its identification with the Duke of Windsor, Pringle of Scotland (a luxury knitwear manufacturer and importer). The Duke, like many others, used the argyle design pattern for golf clothing on both jerseys and long socks that were needed for the plus-fours trouser fashion of the day.

National Sunday Supper Day - Second Sunday in January
NATIONAL SUNDAY SUPPER DAY
National Sunday Supper Day is observed annually on the second Sunday in January.
Sunday Supper starts off as one day a week and soon becomes a way of life.  - Sunday Supper Movement
These days families are busy with after school activities, jobs and homework.  Sunday supper has been a disappearing tradition around the country and the Sunday Supper Movement aims to bring families back together in the kitchen and around the dinner table one Sunday at a time.   National Sunday Supper Day is another step toward this goal.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Spend the day with family preparing and sharing Sunday Supper. For more information visit wwww.sundaysuppermovement.com.  Use #SundaySupper on social media.
HISTORY
Isabel Laessig is the founder of the Sunday Supper Movement and the Food and Wine Conference. A mother of four, she was inspired to start her blog, Family Foodie, when her oldest left for college and the things she would miss most about home would be the times spent in the kitchen and around the table with family.
In 2012 Laessig and eight other bloggers and their families celebrated the first virtual Sunday Supper with a progressive dinner.  According to Laessig, she and these eight bloggers are "passionate about bringing families together to cook and eat together."

National Joygerm Day - January 8
NATIONAL JOYGERM DAY
January 8th annually recognizes National JoyGerm Day.  National JoyGerm Day was created as a day to remind people across the country that by being positive and treating people with kindness, they can influence those around them and pass that positive attitude on to others. When we share good moods, we impact the lives of people around us and those people become infected with that same positive joy and spread it to others.
Laugh, smile, be kind, inspire and spread the one type of germ that is good for everyone to catch!
HOW TO OBSERVE
Throughout the day, see how often you can spread the JoyGerm! Use #NationalJoygermDay to post on social media.

The Engine Room is pleased to present "Glass Houses" a selection of works by Carlton Scott Sturgill. "Glass Houses" will be the inaugural exhibit at this new, non-profit project space located in the St. Claude Arts District, as well as the artist's first exhibition in New Orleans. Sturgill's work explores the divide between the public face we present to society and our private behavior in our most intimate moments. The work grapples with voyeurism and exhibitionism, people looking at themselves, and people looking at others in a society obsessed with selfies.

"Inspired by the bedroom communities of the Midwest, my work examines the conflict between our need to push our individual sexual boundaries and our longing to appear as ambassadors of a white-picket-fence America," Sturgill said. "Using materials sourced from the suburban landscape, such as paint chip samples from Home Depot and clothing from the all-American company Ralph Lauren, along with imagery and text appropriated from the Casual Encounters section of Craigslist, I explore the dichotomy between public persona and private behavior. My paintings, sculptures and mosaics use the vernacular of the American heartland to scratch the surface of suburban pretense, exploring the compulsion to both veil ourselves behind the facade of the American Dream and our desire to expose our most intimate moments through the wormhole of electronic media."

The opening reception on Thursday, January 12 at 6 p.m. promises to enhance the voyeuristic experience of the exhibition as the greenhouse becomes a stage for burlesque performances by Sarah Duprix. Libations will be served by Old New Orleans Rum.

"Glass Houses" runs through February 11th with additional performances scheduled for Saturday, January 21st during Open Studios at 2839 North Robertson.

Christmas tree recycling
New Orleans: Residents are asked to put their trees at the curb - not on the neutral ground - before 5 a.m. on their regularly scheduled second collection day from Jan. 12-14 in areas served by Richard's Disposal and Metro Services, which cover most of the city. Properties in the French Quarter and the Downtown Development District, which are served by Empire Services, should place their trees curbside before 4 a.m. on Jan. 12.
Story Continued Below
The project is funded by the city's Office of Resilience and Sustainability. In 2016, more than 6,000 Christmas trees were collected and airlifted by the Louisiana National Guard into Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge as part of a program to create new marsh habitat.
Residents seeking more information should call NOLA 311.
Jefferson Parish: Residents are asked to put their trees out at night on Jan. 11. Progressive Waste Solutions will make one pass through each neighborhood in the parish - including municipalities - to collect trees from Jan. 12-14.
The tree pickups will be mixed in with Progressive Waste Solutions' normally scheduled trash collection, but the company will be using dedicated trucks for the trees.
Some of the trees will be added to already constructed shoreline fences in Goose Bayou near Lafitte to help protect and restore Jefferson's coastal wetlands. Other trees will be chipped and used for composting.
The state's Office of Coastal Management originally funded the project but stopped in 2011. Parish officials said a $25,000 donation from Dyno Nobel, a Westwego-based mining and explosives company, in 2013 continues to fund the project.
Jefferson Parish is looking for volunteers, particularly those with shallow-draft boats, to move trees from a Lafitte staging area to the pre-constructed shoreline fences in Goose Bayou.
Anyone interested should contact the Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs at (504) 731-4612.
Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age and must wear layered clothing including long pants, a long-sleeved shirt and closed-toe, sturdy shoes. Hats and sunscreen are recommended. Gloves, safety glasses, life vests, lunch and refreshments will be provided.
Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. Jan. 14 at Cochiara's Marina, 4477 Jean Lafitte Blvd. in Lafitte, to move trees to the shoreline fences in Goose Bayou, near the town of Jean Lafitte. If bad weather conditions on Jan. 14 cause a cancellation, the event will be rescheduled for Jan. 21.
