Happy Birthday, Church!
This Sunday, we will celebrate Pentecost, one of the three most important festivals of the Christian church year. Pentecost has its roots in the Jewish festival Shavuot, on which Jews celebrate both the harvest and receiving the 10 Commandments on Mount Sinai, fifty days after Passover. Similarly, Pentecost is celebrated fifty days after Easter, commemorating the gift of the Holy Spirit on the disciples, their ability to spontaneously speak new languages, and the establishment of the "church," as thousands of new Jesus-followers were baptized as a result of the disciples' witness. Pentecost is, for all intents and purposes, the birthday of the Church.
At Zion, we consider this festival a connector between the Easter season and Ordinary Time, the Sundays after Pentecost. So, we're still bringing the joy, with an extra infusion of the Holy Spirit. Don't forget to wear RED, the color that symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit in the life of the church. See you in worship!
