Winter is coming
By a “snow” of hands, who’s ready for winter?
We are. City of Vaughan crews begin plowing once five centimetres (two inches) of snow have accumulated. All roads are plowed within 16 hours after snowfall has ended. Main roads are plowed and salted first, within four hours, to keep them clear for emergency and transit vehicles. Learn more about our extensive winter services and road maintenance program to keep the public safe during the winter months. Residents can get up-to-the-minute information on winter operations by visiting vaughan.ca/snow  to sign up for email notifications .

Energy efficiency in the winter
Colder weather makes us want to turn up the heat to stay warm and cozy inside our homes, but this can result in more energy use and higher energy bills. Here are some easy ways to reduce energy consumption in the winter and save on your energy bills.
  • Plug electronics into a power bar instead of directly into outlets. This allows you to turn off the power bar when not in use.
  • Turn down your thermostat when asleep or away from home. Alectra Utilities reports that comfortable temperatures are 20°C to 21°C when you are at home and 18°C when you are asleep or away.
  • Carpets and rugs insulate the floor, so place these in rooms that are frequently used.

Protect your home during the winter season
When prolonged extreme cold temperatures happen, water pipes delivering water to homes and businesses may be impacted and you may notice a change in water pressure. If you suspect your pipes are frozen, call Access Vaughan at 905-832-2281. A licensed water operator can help determine if and where the water service is frozen.

Help keep roads and sidewalks clear
Winter is here and everyone has a role to play when it comes to keeping our roads and sidewalks clear. Residents must shovel snow and ice from sidewalks bordering their property within 24 hours after a snowfall has ended and remove anything that may interfere with or be hazardous to plow crews, including parked cars and landscaping features.

The City’s waste calendar includes schedules and tips on our collection services
The City of Vaughan’s 2019 waste calendar includes important information for residents such as set out times, leaf and yard waste collection, and acceptable waste container sizes. Waste set out: winter edition
Canadian winters can be tough.
