Weekly eNews for August 9th 2024

From the Desk of Father Josh Hilton,

Curate

In the daily office this past week, we read the story of Gideon. Gideon was a mighty warrior from The Book of Judges who led Israel in victory against the Midianites (Judges 6 – 8). What is interesting about Gideon, is while he was a mighty warrior, his true strength derived from his submission to God. During his life, the people of Israel had forgotten their fidelity to God and began to worship Baal and other false gods. The angel of the Lord appears to Gideon and commissions him to lead Israel to victory over their oppressors, but first, Gideon was commanded to destroy the false idols. Gideon succeeds, restoring freedom and peace in Israel for forty years. God commissions Gideon, Gideon destroys the false idols, and God grants Gideon victory. The same is true in our life. God calls us and sees our greatest potential. Our potential is then only fully realized when we destroy the false gods and idols in our own life. Then, when we offer ourselves to God fully, we gain the victory God desires for us. It’s only when we destroy the idols which hold us captive that we then fully experience God’s freedom.

In Christ,

Fr. Josh

ST. AIDAN'S CALENDAR
TITHES + OFFERINGS

This week’s Vestry Corner again focuses on the latest update on our NEW SECURITY SYSTEM for St. Aidan's--Installation to be completed by mid -August!

Here is more information to help you understand the plans and the operation of our new security system:

Who is paying for this system:

The Pre-School funded all of the changes in Burtenshaw Hall. The camera system for the main church building was funded entirely by donations designated specifically to be used for security. No church operating funds were used for any of this. There will be no monthly or annual fees.

What will the system include:

-A new entry system to control access for the side door at Burtenshaw Hall,

-A video/intercom system that will enable the pre-school staff to see who is approaching the building during school hours and for the preschool to communicate with those who want to enter during school hours,

-Seven exterior cameras for Burtenshaw Hall- five for the doors and two for the playground area,

-Four exterior cameras for the church--three cameras for the church parking lot and one at the main entry, and

-Desk monitors to view the camera video for the Pre-School Director, Pre-School Assistant Director, Rector, and Parish Administrator.

None of the cameras will have audio capabilities – only video. Camera footage will be recorded.

When:

This installation started Monday, August 5th, and should be completed before school starts on Wednesday, August 14.

How will this change affect me:

Parishioners will still be able to enter Burtenshaw Hall whenever there is a need. What is changing is how that will occur. Here are some highlights.

On school days: From 7 AM to 3 PM, everyone will need to be “buzzed in” by using the new intercom system by the side door of Burtenshaw Hall. The preschool staff will be able to remotely unlock the door for you, so the response should be prompt in most cases. Please do not allow parents or anyone you don’t know to come in with you if they have not been specifically cleared by the preschool to enter. Also, please do not prop the doors open or open them to strangers once you are inside. That will compromise the security we are trying to provide.

The preschool staff is being given a list of the names of people who often need to enter during the week, and they have a list of the regularly scheduled weekday meetings. If your name is not on their list when you need to enter, just identify yourself as a parishioner and why you need to enter.

Weekdays when preschool is closed and on Saturdays, you will need a PIN for access during these times, so please contact the church office by calling (770) 521-0207. Or let a staff member know that you need a PIN.

On Sundays: The main doors into Burtenshaw Hall will be unlocked on Sundays and for special events, just as they are now. The side door will need the PIN code to be unlocked.

Entry into the Church: Entry into the main church building has not changed. The only change for the main building is the addition of exterior cameras.

Please remember: The primary purpose for all of this is to safeguard our children. Every effort has been made to enhance security while making parishioner access as convenient as possible. Please be patient during the transition as a few glitches are inevitable despite everyone’s best efforts.

Calling All Choristers!

Dear Friends,

We have enjoyed a remarkable second season with the Children’s Chorister Choir, led by the exemplary Dr. Wanda Yang Temko, Director of Choristers! In just a few weeks we will be resuming rehearsals on Wednesday, September 4th 5:00-6:15 pm for Choristers, and 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm for Adult Choir. We are eagerly welcoming new members in both choirs, but we are especially hoping for more participants for the Choristers' Choir.

On Saturday, August 17th, St. Aidan’s will be hosting an open house for our Choristers from 9:30-11:30 am.

The Chorister Open House is a wonderful way for girls and boys in Grades 2-8 to get a taste of what it is like to be a Chorister at St. Aidan’s Episcopal Church. We will have a morning of singing, games, information, snacks, and we will unpack the extraordinary world of the Chorister!

You will have the chance to talk with Dr. Wanda Yang Temko, Chorister Director, and Charles Higgs, Music Director, and other Choristers, as we share information over snacks with current Chorister parents as well.

To register, use the QR code in this article, follow this link, or contact Dr. Wanda at choristers@staidans.org.
