Message from our CEO, Loretta V. Bush... |
We're In Bloom…
Summer is here, and with it comes graduations. We’re pleased that 21 new primary care physicians have completed their training at Authority Health – and 24 new residents have joined the program. Our residents represent the diversity of our community and the commitment to providing high quality primary care for the underserved.
In June we focused on men’s health, starting with a healthy grilling event and health fair for men at the Ruby Cole Community Kitchen in Popoff Family Health Center. It not only offered some tips on how to make the traditional summer grilling menu, but also, we had several health information tables available to answer questions about men’s health. In addition, one of our medical residents was able to treat the infected foot wound in one of the attendees. We’re always ready to help. You can see more about the event in the video presentation later in this newsletter.
Also, in June, we began the season in which we commemorate freedom on Juneteenth and leading up to July 4th. Juneteenth offers an important reminder for all about the importance of inclusion. I recall the comments of President Barak Obama: “Juneteenth has never been a celebration of victory, or an acceptance of the way things are. Instead, it’s a celebration of progress. It’s an affirmation that despite the most painful parts of our history, things do get better…”
In our community, we work towards equitable progress in the health status of the communities we serve, and we expect that things will get better.
During this time when we focus on men’s health, we encourage you or if you have men in your life encourage them to get a primary care doctor and take the first step towards better health. Popoff Family Health Center is accepting new patients. Call 313 824-1000 ext 1.
In good health,
Loretta V. Bush, MSHA

MEDICAL RESIDENCY is an amazing journey of physicians working together, learning together, laughing together, grinding together all for the purpose of becoming more capable, caring, thoughtful healers and leaders. Choosing the Authority Health medical residency program was not only a commitment to excellence but also a commitment to serving the most vulnerable populations among us. To all of our graduates, we thank you for your dedication and service to our community here in Detroit and southeastern Michigan. We begin with GME Family Medicine, Congratulations!
One of the things that makes the practice of family medicine special is its focus on preventative care. Family medicine physicians have the opportunity to grow with their patients, which sometimes include whole families. Preventative care can create better health outcomes when doctors are able to gain a deeper knowledge base of their patients' overall health. By encouraging regular checkups family medicine physicians have a unique opportunity to provide more comprehensive care while building trust and mutually respectful provider-patient relationships. We're grateful to this group of FMPs for the many relationships they took part in building that have led to a healthier community right here in Detroit.

Inquisitive. Thoughtful. Intellectual. Analytical.
THESE ARE all common traits of Internists... the GME Internal Medicine residents have proven to be the consummate generalists. Gaining a deep understanding of the interplay of the body organ systems and using that knowledge to properly diagnose, treat, and prevent conditions that affect their patients is an internal medicine doctor's ongoing goal.
We want to congratulate the Internal Medicine graduating class on the completion of their medical residency program here at Authority Health! To know the amount of attention and thoughtfulness that was put into appointing and mentoring each of them for this program makes us that much more confident and excited to see how that thoughtfulness will manifest in their future work and service as certified and experienced physicians.
We have no doubt that their scientific knowledge and clinical expertise will continue to make them vital to both patients and medical professionals here in Detroit, the state of Michigan, and beyond.

"Rows of liquid eyes in laughter,
How they glimmer, how they quiver!
Sparkling one another after,
Like bright ripples on a river."
an excerpt from The Joy Of Childhood by George Darley

IT TAKES A special type of physician and person to make children and their parents feel at ease when they visit the doctor for regular visits yet alone when a child is suffering from an illness. Personality truly comes into play with pediatricians. Great pediatricians focus on delivering health care to their patients without loosing focus on things like making children smile during their visit. Pediatricians understand that there's value in building real connections with the young people that they care for; they know that those connections can lead to greater comfort and in turn allow for more accurate diagnosis of the children that they treat.
We congratulate the 2024 Class of Pediatricians on their outstanding work in their GME Pediatric Residency! Their passion and willingness to go beyond the requirements to serve our community here in Detroit, southeastern Michigan, and other underserved communities that are even beyond our boarders is admirable and seems fitting for doctors whose training is focused on children's health and wellbeing.

WHILE PSYCHIATRY has always been an important component in ensuring the overall health of people, today's culture is looking for society to bring mental health into focus even more. Bringing more awareness around the fact that mental health is as vital as physical health is to our wellbeing is an ongoing goal for our organization as a whole as well as a point of focus for the GME Psychiatry Residency Program.
Congratulations to the graduating psychiatrists on successfully completing your GME Psychiatry Residency! Your rigorous scientific research and emphasis on human connection has made us confident that you will go on to serve communities here in Detroit and elsewhere with expertise and empathy.

AS WE WELCOME our new incoming residents we wanted to share just a few more words and well wishes from the Executive Leadership team to the outgoing graduating class of Authority Health's GME Residency Program.
Our residents experience the full range of the practice of physicians including at private practices, hospitals, and at our very own community health clinics in Detroit and southeastern Michigan. Whether a physician's chosen residency is family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, or psychiatry the goal of Authority Health's Medical Residency Program is to create a learning environment that centers mentorship and individualized training. Every graduating class brings with them their own set of curiosities and questions, focused passion, and unique talent that lends itself well to the clinical and scholarly work of ACGME requirements. Congratulations to our 2024 GME Graduates on seeing the successful completion of your residency program. To say that your future is bright is an understatement! - Angela Cole, DIO of Authority Health GME Program
We work hard to provide thoughtfully diverse and experientially rich and nourishing community spaces for our medical residents so that upon completion of the program they go on to strengthen and advance their chosen profession. We feel honored to have been a part of helping to prepare this year’s graduates for a lifetime of providing thorough and empathetic clinical care to their patients. So, thank you so much for the excellent care that you provided to our community. Let me reiterate how very proud we are of you and the pride that we feel when we think about how the community health experience that you’ve gained while a resident in our program will continue to serve as a reminder of the importance of building trusting relationships with your patients that are culturally informed and based on mutual respect. Once again, congratulations to you and to your families! - Loretta V. Bush, President & CEO of Authority Health

Why Reduce Access to Primary Care to ‘Supply and Demand’?
| |
Sally C. Pipes, president and CEO of the Pacific Research Institute, criticized the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid’s regulation that beneficiaries should not wait more than 15 business days to get a primary care appointment. In her article published in the June 17 Detroit News, “Limit Medicaid enrollment to alleviate wait times,” she confirms the acute need for more primary care providers, but her solution to the problem is to reduce Medicaid enrollment “and preserve the program for those who truly cannot take care of themselves.”
Limiting “demand” – reducing access – is contrary to humanitarian principles. The problem is on the supply side: We need more primary care providers, and more health centers which are available to receive people with Medicaid coverage in a timely manner. The regulation to limit wait times is more an issue for commercial providers of ambulatory care. Federally qualified health centers routinely leave appointments open each day to see patients who have a timely need.

| Detroit’s Food Cooperatives Offer One of the Solutions to Food Deserts and Food Insecurity | |
THE GROWING season is well underway, and with it growth in access points for fresh food in Detroit. The opening of two community-based food cooperative grocery stores in under-resourced areas of Detroit is one of the solutions to food deserts and alternatives to food swamp providers like convenience stores and gas stations. The Abbott Resource Center Abbott Resource Center, a cooperative located in the Brightmoor neighborhood, and the Detroit Peoples’ Food Co-op, in the North End neighborhood, both opened this spring.
Cooperative enterprises date back to the 1800s and had a resurgence as social enterprises in the 1960s. The Detroit Peoples’ Food Co-op grew out of a movement to create greater Black food sovereignty in a city with vast tracks of food deserts and concentrations of food swamps, with a small network of independent grocers scattered across the city. Both cooperatives are community-purposed, with a grocery store selling quality edibles – much of it organic and locally sourced – on the first floor and community meeting and service space on the second floor.

It is with great excitement and pleasure that we welcome a new generation of doctors to the GME Authority Health Residency Program. As always we are heartened by the unique experiences and diverse cultural backgrounds that they shared with the GME recruiting team during selection. We feel encouraged that as these physicians take this next step of Graduate Medical Education in their careers they will also be helping to improve access to primary care within areas in parts of our community that are medically underserved. To know that these doctors will be contributing to the care of members of our community brings us great pride and joy.
