On Wednesday, July 20 at 10:00 AM ET, the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary held a full committee hearing entitled “After the Highland Park Attack: Protecting Our Communities from Mass Shootings.” This hearing, the Judiciary Committee’s tenth hearing focused on gun violence held during the 117^th Congress, focused on the dangers of widespread civilian access to military-style assault weapons designed to kill large numbers of people in seconds.

Highland Park, Illinois, Mayor Nancy Rotering was a witness. She provided written testimony and discussed the need to make immediate federal policy changes to reduce the risk of the types of horrific shootings during the July 4 parade in Highland Park.

The Independence Day Parade shooting in Highland Park, Illinois, was the 309th mass shooting in America this year — averaging more than 11 per week in 2022. Prior to this hearing, the Full Committee held related hearings entitled “Constitutional and Common Sense Steps to Reduce Gun Violence” (3/23/21); “Combating Gun Trafficking and Reducing Violence in Chicago” (12/13/21); “Federal Support for Preventing and Responding to Carjackings” (3/1/22); “Examining the ‘Metastasizing Domestic Terrorism Threat After the Buffalo Attack” (6/7/22); and “Protecting America’s Children From Gun Violence” (6/15/22). The Subcommittee on the Constitution held hearings entitled “Stop Gun Violence: Extreme Risk Order / ‘Red Flag”’ Laws” (4/28/21); “Stop Gun Violence: Ghost Guns” (5/11/21); “Stop Gun Violence: Safe Storage” (5/25/21); and “Stop Gun Violence: The Jackson-Elias Domestic Violence Survivor Protection Act” (5/18/22).
