Activism is as simple

as talking to a friend

Over and over Trump screams that he is being treated unfairly by the judicial system. In contrast, President Biden did not complain about how the system was treating his son Hunter, he did not attack the judge, or anyone for that matter.

Trump was found guilty by a jury of 12 citizens, Hunter Biden was found guilty by a jury of 12 citizens, but only one of them is blaming everyone else for their guilty verdict.

It is a tale of two people, and it is a tale that starkly illustrates the dangers of a Trump presidency.

Whether you donate money, join a phone bank, knock on doors, or just talk to a friend, get active!

Talk to a Friend

You read that correctly! Just talk to a friend.

If you’re wondering what to say, the national Democratic Party puts out regular emails and texts highlighting events in the news and President Biden’s accomplishments. Sign up here to join their list.

To go further, download the Reach app (for Android or iPhone), and check the page here to learn how to use the app to access a regularly updated library of high quality social media content coordinated by the Democratic Party.

Talk to Voters

If you’re looking for meaningful conversations with voters, join one of SCCDP’s canvasses for Adam Gray. We’ve already organized two, and we have 14 more in the works, all kicking off at Gray’s campaign headquarters in Merced. We’ll be coordinating carpooling for all of them.

In 2022, Gray lost his bid to represent Central Valley’s CD-13 by just 564 votes. Now as then, this congressional district is crucial to winning the House.

Emma Riordan, a college student and an SCCDP summer intern, joined a canvass earlier this month.

She was expecting that she’d get doors slammed in her face. Instead, she encountered Democrats eager to speak with her, and grateful for the information she brought them.

“They said, ‘Oh Adam Gray, I recognize his name. I didn’t know he only lost by 500 votes.’’”

And they pledged to vote for him.

Sometimes a Spanish-speaker answered the door. Then Riordan was able to call someone at campaign headquarters who spoke Spanish and could talk to the voter over the phone. A 10- or 15-minute conversation often ensued, and the voter pledged their vote.

“We were able to reach voters usually not reached by campaigns,” Riordan said, adding that the canvass “was really fun.”

Students: log volunteer hours for your activism

We’re offering a monthly phone bank just for young people ages 15 to 25, where high school and college students can log volunteer hours by calling for the Biden/Harris ticket. The next phone bank is this Sunday June 23. Register here.

Run for local office

We’re also working to ensure a strong Democratic candidate in every local race, especially school board races that can harbor Trojan horses.

We worked with our colleagues in San Mateo County to present a series of Friday lunchtime training sessions for Democratic candidates. Over 100 Democrats signed up for the sessions, which launched in April, and the individual sessions regularly had 60 or more attendees. Recordings of the sessions can be viewed here.

The candidate filing period for local races starts on July 15 and ends on Friday, August 9, with a short extension to August 14 for any race in which an incumbent who was not term limited did not file. Information on how to file and run is available here.

Candidates interested in seeking the SCCDP’s endorsement can learn more here. Our endorsement process begins during the filing period and continues to the end of August, culminating with endorsement being decided in early September.

Encourage the next generation of Democratic leaders

Encourage young people to participate in our annual Youth Takeover on July 11. The takeover gives them a chance to offer their perspective on issues of the day, and to pass resolutions that can become the official position of the local Democratic Party.

Share our flyer with youth who may be interested and encourage them to apply here.
