New Teacher Welcome Bags

August 2, 2024 - 4:45 pm.

Dorchester Chamber of Commerce

306 High Street, Cambridge, MD

We know school just got out for the summer but planning for the new school year is already underway. One way we help to support DCPS, and the work they are doing to create our next workforce and set of community leaders, is to provide welcome bags for the new teachers each year.

We gather items from the community to put in the bags. If you have logo items that you would like to share with the new teachers (pens, mugs, water bottles, etc.) that would be great. You can also provide gift cards/ certificates for products and services that they can use. We accept monetary donations that we use to purchase items they need to help as they get settled into their new roles at DCPS.

We will need items for 60 new teachers and will need to have the items in by August 2. If you are interested in participating, please reach out to us via phone (410-228-3575) or email at bill@dorchesterchamber.org.

Hurlock Elementary School helps the broader community

MARYLAND – School will start sooner than you think, and students will need new shoes, among other things. A local school has chosen to provide essentials for the community in their time of need.

Whether it’s providing meals on the weekend for hungry children, or warm coats for winter months, Hurlock Elementary says they won’t rest until they’re the best and that means helping the broader community. Alexis McBean is the community liaison for Hurlock Elementary School. She says they started with a clothing closet to help a few, but donations just continued to grow, and so did the need.

The school has collected everything from shirts, jackets, and shoes. Clothing ranges from 18 months all the way up to adults, and Alexis says, that’s not all they have to offer. “We wanted to reach a bigger scale, we don’t know what they’re going through in their community so, why not offer it to everyone else… We are a tidal one school, we are a poverty-stricken school so, there are a lot of kids that are less fortunate than some… We have nonperishable foods, sometimes we do have frozen meats. We have partnered with PING; they donate hygiene stuff as well.”

Meredith Thompson, the school’s media specialist, says it’s important for these students to have the basic essentials so they can properly function and be successful. “Our school, like Ms. McBean has said, is in a low poverty area. So, a lot of our community suffers from those basic needs and wants to live in our society… I think with this start, it will open up other community members to donate to us, to be able to continue this.”

They say there is plenty of donations to go around, and this is a positive thing for the neighborhood, and according to Alexis, this is only the beginning. “It’s free! we’re offering clothes, shoes, lunch boxes, towels, a variety of things. There’s no limit to what you can come and get.”

The school is excited for their first ever Clothing Drive that will take place Monday, July 15 at the Hurlock Elementary School cafeteria from 2:30 to 4:30 pm. Whatever school district you are from, wherever you live, they say all are welcome.

Farmers Market provides opportunity for farmers and business owners to sell, keeping money in the community

668c613c24bca image

Expect to see beautiful views and a great selection of products at the Cambridge Farmers Market. Located at Long Wharf, the farmers market resides next to the Choptank River. Vendors sell everything from fresh produce and plants to homemade skincare remedies. The combination of a beautiful setting and sense of community make the event at this location so special.

Robin Bartenfelder from Preston has been selling produce at farmers markets for 47 years. Bartenfelder loves the scenery and the pleasant people that pass through the market each week. “You have people coming in on the sailboats and everything, and the local people,” Bartenfelder said.

The market attracts people from across the region and far beyond due to it being beside the Cambridge Yacht Basin. Last week, an American Cruise Line ship was docked next to the market which brought in a unique group of customers.

Diana from Orlando, Florida, was traveling by boat and made sure to stop in Cambridge for the market. “This is our second night and we planned to come at this time so we could go to the farmers market,” she said.

The location also gives this particular market a rare opportunity to bring in customers who are traveling by water. Patrons can dock their boat and stop by the market for fresh produce before returning to their boats.

WBOC 70th Anniversary Special: Celebrating 7 Decades as Delmarva’s News Leader

66943a1e0b9d7 image

DELMARVA - July 15th, 2024 marks WBOC’s 70th year on air as Delmarva’s News Leader, and we have a special program in store Monday night.

Join us tonight, July 15th, at 7 p.m. for a deep-dive look at the past 7 decades since WBOC’s first broadcast on July 15th, 1954. From the very first launch at NASA Wallops Flight Facility, to the opening of the Salisbury Mall, the opening of the parallel span of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to the Civil Rights Movement on the Eastern Shore, WBOC has been here to cover it all.

We’ll also take a look back on our own history, reflecting on WBOC’s growth under the late Tom Draper and his family, the introduction of Chopper 16, the many stories of Scorchy Tawes and Charles Paparella, and even sit down with a viewer who has been watching us since the beginning.

It’s a Go: Final Regulatory Hurdle Passed for New Shore Regional Medical Center

Today, the Maryland Health Services Cost Review Commission (HSCRC) unanimously approved the rate application request from University of Maryland Shore Regional Health (UM SRH), a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), for the new Shore Regional Medical Center in Easton. HSCRC’s approval helps offset interest and depreciation for the construction of the new facility and represents the final step needed for site preparation work to begin at 10000 Longwoods Road later this month

“We are incredibly excited and grateful for what this new hospital means for residents of the region,” said Ken Kozel, UM SRH President and CEO. “This marks the largest healthcare project in the history of UM SRH and one of the largest projects ever for the Mid-Shore region.”

“This is a historic day for healthcare delivery and improving rural health care on the Eastern Shore,” said Mohan Suntha, MD, MBA, President and CEO of UMMS. “UMMS and UM SRH have been at the forefront of providing health care access points with over $150 million invested during the last decade across the Mid-Shore’s five counties, The new regional medical center in Easton will serve as a health care hub to meet the needs of residents across the region

Late in 2023, the Easton Planning Commission approved sketch plans for the new hospital and within the past year, UM SRH received approval for the project’s Certificate of Need (CON) and approvals from the UM SRH board and the UMMS board. “The HSCRC’s rate approval is the last part of the regulatory approval process, and we are thrilled that our vision of expanding access to high-quality care in a modern facility is now coming to fruition,” Kozel added.

TidalHealth's Free Bariatric Seminar

Start your weight-loss journey today

Are you looking to lose weight and kickstart your journey to a healthier, happier life? If so, consider attending a free bariatric seminar hosted by TidalHealth.

These informative sessions, focusing primarily on surgical interventions, also present a pathway to the medical weight loss program for those who find surgery isn’t the right fit for them.

TidalHealth’s free bariatric seminars occur twice a month, with sessions scheduled on the second Thursday at 6 pm and the last Saturday at 9 am.

Led by experienced surgeons, these seminars provide attendees with the chance to meet and engage with a surgeon before leaving the facility.

The duration of the seminars varies, typically lasting between one to two hours, contingent on the number of questions raised by participants. Patients may attend alone or bring a support person.

Attending the seminar serves as a prerequisite for entering the surgical weight-loss program. Patients cannot proceed to consultations with a surgeon without first participating in this informative session.

To register, call 302-297-2412.
