Northcutt Retiring after 10 years with CNGA

Please join us in congratulating Ben as he retires May 31. Ben has been with CNGA since 2014 as Membership Coordinator. Besides welcoming our members and making sure they had access to all our services and benefits, Ben also organized our December service projects supporting local charities with donations that started in 2019 with a blanket drive called “Tree Wrap for the Homeless.” He has staffed the Young Horticulture Professionals in their efforts to reach out to the upcoming generation of horticulturalists. He has organized countless Member BBQs over the years and has helped bring a strong sense of fellowship to CNGA. Ben has been the editor of eLeaf weekly newsletter since 2014 and the Safety Sense newsletter which runs from April – September. Taking over for most of Ben’s responsibilities is Meg Amendola

We are keeping the celebration low-key right now, with the aim of having a gathering later this summer. Please help us congratulate Ben and thank him for everything he has done for CNGA with a greeting card or note sent to the office (959 South Kipling Parkway, Suite 200, Lakewood, CO 80226,) or send him an email by clicking here.

2024 Legislative Session Wrap-Up

After 120 days, the 2024 Colorado Legislative Session officially concluded last week. Every other week throughout the session, the GreenCO Legislative Committee met to discuss with GreenCO lobbyists what was taking place at the Capitol and to take action on bills impacting our businesses. CNGA representatives on the GreenCO Legislative Committee were Gene Pielin (Gulley Greenhouses), Tom Halverstadt (Arbor Valley) and Loren Bauman (Jared’s).

Thank you to the committee members, legislators, and GreenCO’s lobbying team that worked tirelessly to ensure the members of our seven trade associations are able to continue our business practices, allowing us to help Coloradans select and properly care for plants and landscapes. Thank you to those who supported us through the Green Power Lunch and your donations to enable us to do this important work.

GreenCO tracked 40 bills (Opposed: 6, Amend: 2, Monitor: 34, Support: 2) during this session, ranging from pesticide exemption, landscaping practices, air quality improvements and labor and employment laws. For a more in-depth look, see the bills we tracked here.

As election season ramps up this summer, GreenCO will be reaching out to ask you to support our Political Action Committee, which will be interviewing candidates for Colorado’s General Assembly election this fall. Thank you for your continued support!

Speaker Announced for Women in Horticulture Luncheon

CNGA is pleased to announce the guest speaker for the 29th annual Women in Horticulture Luncheon: Jane Shellenberger!

Jane is a lifelong learner and eclectic gardener who lives on a 5-acre farmette near Hygiene, Colorado. She founded, and published and edited the print magazine Colorado Gardener for 26 years before converting it to a smaller, digital-only e-magazine. This allowed her to visit many different Western gardens, meet all kinds of engaging plant people — and accumulate plants! Her book, Organic Gardeners Companion: Growing Vegetables in the West, was published by Fulcrum Books in 2012.
