Clergy Reflection
I recently returned from a retreat at the Quaker Institute at Pendle Hill in PA. The theme was “Living Our Testimonies in the Fierce Urgency of Now,” taken from a line in Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech. Although it was a great event, the most salient portion for me wasn’t its presentations, presenters or facilitators but the people I met during those four days. They were very ordinary people who were engaged in awe-inspiring work for love, peace, and justice in the world. Literally, “ordinary people doing extraordinary things!”

On Wednesday evening, May 22 at 7:00 p.m., join us for a screening of Philadelphia Eleven, a compelling new documentary film about the first women to become Episcopal priests. Free and open to the public. The trailer is available here.
In 1974, a group of women and their supporters organized their ordination as Episcopal priests in an act of civil disobedience and challenged the very essence of patriarchy within Christendom.
This documentary film tells their story. The ordinations of the Philadelphia Eleven opened the way for fifty-years of living more fully into equity across the gender spectrum in an historically patriarchal institution. While there is still much work to do to dismantle oppression in all its forms, the Episcopal Church has inarguably been changed because of what happened on July 29, 1974 at the Church of the Advocate in Philadelphia.

Johnston Square Elementary School News
Our partnership with Johnston Square Elementary School continues to grow. Teachers, students and administrators appreciate the support we consistently give.
Did you know that 5th grade students from JSE go to Baltimore Design School, Beechfield, Booker T. Washington School for the Arts, Mount Royal and others for middle school? Baltimore City moved to a middle school choice model in 2010. Principal Olumiji is planning a "prom" for all students with good attendance. It will be held on May 23rd. Donations of Capri Suns, Juice Boxes, and snacks such as chips, Takis, and cookies are needed for the celebration. Please drop them off by Monday, May 20th so we can deliver them on Tuesday. If you are interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities at JSE, please contact Cathy Gearhart.
