President's Letter

Peter P. Corritori, Jr. '71
President & CEO

Dear Fellow Alums and Friends of The Mount,

Greetings from 4300 Murdock Avenue. We are now 8 months into the school year and doing well. We have just concluded the third marking period. Our students continue to excel in their studies. 246 have achieved Dean's List or First and Second Honors. This is a 4 student increase from the second marking period, but a 21 or 9.5% increase in Honors versus last year.

In addition students participating in our mandatory Project Success program for students failing 2 or more subjects have decreased 17% from the prior marking period and 25% from last year. Congratulations Mount Students and by all means keep up the great work!
For our seniors, their diligence over the last 4 years is beginning to pay dividends. 96% of the 160 members of the Class of 2016 have applied to college and 81 have already been accepted. These Mounties have been offered over $6M in financial aid. Consistent with our history we anticipate in excess of 90% of our applying seniors will be starting college in September.

I recently read an article by Robert Pondiscio, a senior fellow and vice president for external affairs at the Thomas B. Fordham Institute. The article chronicles and laments the steep decline in Catholic education from its zenith in the 1960's with 5.2M students attending 13,000 Catholic schools in the U.S. to less than half of that today. The reasons for the decline are numerous and unsurprising: the steep rise in the cost of education, the decline in religious, brothers, nuns and priests, the growth of charter schools, stagnant middle class incomes, (inner-city families have been particularly hurt), and for high schools, the precipitous drop in Catholic grammar schools which historically have been the feeder system to Catholic high schools.

This slow, steady decline in Catholic education is a sad story and generally detrimental to American society. A compelling argument can be made that charter schools have not been as effective in the aggregate as the Catholic schools they have largely supplanted. At risk children are 42% more likely to graduate from high school and two-and-a-half times more likely to graduate from college if they attend a Catholic high school rather than a public school. The Mount's college acceptance and attendance results certainly bear this out.

I share this with you to emphasize the importance of your ongoing support to both our Annual Fund and Sponsor a Mount Student Program (SAMS). With the Median Household Income of a Mount student at approximately $35,000 per year, 42% of our students receive financial aid and 11% of our students fall below the Federal Poverty Line, our need for increased donations to support financial aid is understandable. If you haven't contributed yet please help support our students by going to our website, www.mtstmichael.org and click on donate or contact Julie Androshick-Boyle, Director of Development at 718-515-6400 x268 for giving options. Your donation large or small will make a meaningful difference in a student's life. Without it many of these young men will not benefit, as we have, from a Mount education.  The Mount is a great investment in human capital and an asset to our community.

As with last year we look forward to a robust freshmen class. Current enrollment in the Class of 2020 is 161; we didn't reach 161 until June last year. We believe a class of 180-185 is attainable. Last year's freshmen class was 177. In addition our Junior High, particularly our 6th grade, enrollment is very strong. We anticipate a meaningful increase versus last year.

I hope you are able to join us for our 26th Annual Golf and Tennis Outing on Monday, May 23 at Fenway Golf Club. This year we will be honoring Michael Borelli, from the
Class of '59. If you are not able to play golf or tennis, please join us for dinner. Be sure to mark your calendars for The Mount's 90th Anniversary gala on Saturday, October 1st, here at The Mount. This will be a not- to- be missed gala party celebrating our school's remarkable first 90 years. I hope you are all able to join us.

If you are in the neighborhood please stop by- I know a visit will bring back wonderful memories. Thank you for your support.

Regards,

Sincerely,
Peter P. Corritori, Jr., '71

Class of 2016 College Acceptance Update!

Mount seniors continue to impress with college acceptances and scholarships. To date, 81 students have been accepted into 323 colleges and universities! That averages out to almost 4 college acceptances per student! Furthermore, a whopping $6 million  (based on four years) in scholarships has been offered to our seniors!   Click here to see the full list of colleges at which our students were accepted!

One of those seniors is Winston Vazquez '16, who has received a full scholarship from Villanova University! Winston is from the Highbridge area of the Bronx, and has gotten the most out of his Mount experience. Winston's GPA is 4.0, and he was also accepted to St. John's University and Manhattan College.

Says Winston, "One of the best things about the Mount was meeting people from different backgrounds. I live in a Dominican neighborhood, but have become friends with Jamaicans and Albanians at Mount."

Winston went to Sacred Heart grade school, and has a younger brother and sister. His mother, Rochely, is incredibly proud.
Says Winston, " I have developed as an individual thanks to excellent teachers who are open to helping you. They care. I am going forward with great confidence."

Some students, like Francisco Martinez and Gianni Caban, might have a hard time deciding which college to attend: Francisco  was accepted into 8 colleges and universities while Gianni was accepted into 9: both were offered scholarships totalling over $240,000!

Make a Direct Difference!
Sponsor a Mount Student!

Did you know that the average household Income for Mount student families is $35,100 (weighted )-  just $11,000 above the federal household poverty level of $24,250 for a family of 4?

Families in low income, urban areas are usually able to devote about 8% of their gross income to tuition. But Mount tuition and fees that total nearly $9000 represent just over 20% of household income for Mount student families.

Awards in the range of $1500-$2500 are not enough for families to keep current on tuition. For meaningful help we want to be able to give awards of $3000 to $4000 to our students.

You can help directly by sponsoring a Mount Student. Below are SAMS sponsorship options:

  • Quarter Tuition for 4 years $1,995 per year
  • Third Tuition for 4 years $2,660 per year
  • Half Tuition for 4 Years $3,990 per year
  • Full Tuition for 4 Years $7,890 per year

Please contact Julie Androshick at julie.androshick@mtstmichael.org for more information. 718-515-6400 ext. 268.

Mount Alum Celebrate at April 2 Reunions

On April 2, 2016, we welcomed four generations of MOUNTIES back to campus for a fun filled evening loaded with memories, tons of laughs, and lifelong connections.

In attendance were our alumni from the Classes of 1971, 1976, 1991 and 2006!

Each year was well represented, and allowed alum to reconnect with one another, as they were reminded of how their Mount brotherhood has shaped their lives.

The Class of '76 surrounds Bro. John Herrmann at the reunion dinner on April 2, 2016.

The Class of 2006 poses with Mount's iconic Michael the Archangel statue.

Spirit of Giving Back Alive with Mount Students

Mount Service In Action: Tariq Beckford '16 and Earl Jones '16
"Mount has taught me to give back"
Tariq Beckford '16's view of the world and his view of himself in it has been shaped by his Mount experience. Says Tariq, "Mount has taught me not only to give back, but  that I can achieve something that separates me from everyone else."

Tariq continues, "Mount changed my way of thinking. It made me see that I can't do things half way, but that I have to put my all into it."

The concept of giving back and of stewardship forms Tariq's actions. Currently  Tariq has a paid position as a reading tutor for first graders at PS 87 in Manhattan.

Common first grader reading challenges are pronunciation, spelling and comprehension. Tariq says he has used certain methods to get the students to fully understand a word. " I play a game with them where I ask them to find a certain word on a page, then pronounce it and write it out. I also ask them to match words, that for instance, mean the same thing."

Meanwhile, Earl Jones '16 has worked at a Camp Integrity at Indian Lake NY for the past few summers as a counselor for kids ranging from 7 to 13. The camp, run by the Local 3 Union in Indian Lake, engages attending kids with sports, arts, camping and cooking.

Says Earl, " My dad suggested getting an job and I went for it. My mother has taught me to give back as well. Even though it is paid, working with younger children is a way to both do something worthwhile and gain work experience."

Mount Students Help Build For, Feed and Help the Less Fortunate in West Virginia and Close To Home

In what has become an annual tradition, five Mount students from junior and senior year gave up their spring break to join with delegations from other Marist schools in serving the forgotten poor of Wheeling, West Virginia at The House of the Carpenter.

Students helped with construction projects, fed the hungry, packed toiletry kits for those living in remote areas "downstate" and engaged in other service activities, all while building community with their fellow Marists.

Their cheerful attitudes and the generosity with which they gave of their time and effort were appreciated by all.

On Tuesday, April 12, the entire sophomore class of about 120 students was dispatched to eight different sites in several of the New York City boroughs for an experience of learning through service to others. Some students worked with the Park Service, while others helped food pantries receive deliveries and organize their inventory. Some students visited the elderly or terminally ill, while on the other end of the spectrum, some students helped out in a daycare center for poor families. Still other students pitched in with Habitat for Humanity to help build a home in Yonkers. Wherever they went, our Mountaineers made a positive impression, and many of them are already looking forward to next year's service experiences.

Mr. James K. Sweeney '48: I am now 85, lucky and grateful for excellent health; still working full time. I have 4 older children in their 50s and an 11 year old son. (Don't ask.)

After decades in the computer biz, I'm completing my 20th year in law this June, 2016. Hard to believe. Don't get to NY much as my extended family is gone or scattered. Maybe there'll be a 70th reunion in'18? I up for that! I do scroll through my Mountaineer every so often for the happy memories of my cherished teens at the Mount.

90th Anniversary of the Mount!

On Saturday, October 1st, friends of The Mount will gather for an evening of dinner and dancing to honor the past and celebrate the future at a gala for up to 1,000 guests.
In addition to the school's 90th anniversary, 2016 also marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Marist Brothers. This year of prayer and reflection is being celebrated by all the branches of the Marist Family.

About the Bi-centenary Year:

Before the Black Madonna in the chapel of Fourvière on 23 July 1816 a small group of young men pledged to found a religious congregation of "Marists". Their dream became a reality in the foundation of the "Marist" family of religious and lay men and women. Two hundred years later, the Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary, the Marist Brothers of the Schools, the Marist Sisters and the Society of Mary (Fathers and Brothers), together with the many groups of Marist Laity throughout the world, remember that significant moment of foundation, give thanks for the many blessings received, and recommit themselves to doing Mary's work in the midst of today's Church and world. Bro. James Bantz Memorial Scholarship

The Bro. John Bantz Memorial Scholarship was established as a non-endowed scholarship in the fall of 2014 to honor the memory and legacy of Mount's former President. Bro. John served at the Mount for 31 years in a variety of roles: as Junior HS Principal, Guidance Counselor, and Development Director.

He stood ready to serve the school in whatever task was required to enhance and move forward the academic and co-curricular program. Prior to his service at the Mount, Bro. John taught math for many years at various Marist schools.

Bro. John was an avid sports fan and was present on the field, off the court or around the track for three seasons, year in and year out. He knew the names of all the students participating in an activity.

The scholarship award will be given to a graduating senior, who exhibits the qualities of character so well illustrated in Bro. John's life:  a spirit of good sportsmanship, a love of math and a record of service to the Mount community.

Trainer GrantTrainer

"This effort addresses a critical need and provides the means for these high schools to establish athletic training programs that will enhance the health and safety of their student athletes," said JEFF MILLER, NFL executive vice president of health and safety policy. "This is an area of priority for us, and we will continue to work with our partners to expand access to athletic trainers in more schools across the country."

Athletic trainers play a vital role in the health and safety of athletes. A recent study from the American Academy of Pediatrics showed that the presence of athletic trainers resulted in lower overall injury rates, improved diagnosis and return-to-play decisions for concussion and other injuries, and fewer recurrent injuries for student athletes. However, nearly two-thirds of high schools lack a full-time athletic trainer and almost thirty-percent do not have access to any athletic training services. This grant contest helps to tackle this need by providing schools with the necessary funding, educational resources, and programmatic support to put athletic trainers on the sidelines and better protect their athletes.

"A top priority of the National Athletic Trainers' Association is the health and safety of the high school athlete," said NATA President SCOTT SAILOR, EdD, ATC. "Through our partnership with the NFL, Gatorade and Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society, more students will be protected with the best possible safety measures in place."
The grant contest, which launched in October, is an extension of the partners' athletic training outreach program. The partners have committed more than $3 million to help fund athletic trainers in communities nationwide. To date, the outreach program has impacted an estimated 160,000 student athletes across more than 670 schools.

"We understand the importance of secondary school athletic trainers and believe partnerships like this one are key to ensuring youth athlete safety," said JEFF KEARNEY, head of Gatorade Sports Marketing. "This program has brought us one step closer to the ultimate goal of having a full-time athletic trainer in every high school in the country, and we are proud to have worked with the NFL, NATA and PFATS on this important initiative."

"The Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society is pleased to be a part of this
important initiative," said RICK BURKHOLDER, MS, ATC, PFATS president and head athletic trainer of the Kansas City Chiefs. "Athletic trainers play a critical role in the overall safety of all athletes, and the students at these winning schools will receive the medical services they so deserve."
