Volume 9, Issue 6

April/May 2024

Greetings,

In partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Cypress and the Rotary Club of Los Alamitos, Cypress, and Seal Beach, the Cypress School District held its ninth annual Every Student Succeeding Awards Breakfast at the Cypress Community Center in April. Inspired by a student recognition program of the same name created by the Association of California School Administrators, the event honors students who have overcome obstacles to find success in school.

Students were recognized from the Cypress School District as well as other schools within our community, including Cypress College, Cypress High School, Oxford Academy, Lexington Junior High School, and St. Irenaeus Parish School. Family members, teachers, school administrators, school board members, city leaders, and representatives from the offices of locally elected state and federal officials were in attendance to show their support for these remarkable students who have demonstrated courage and perseverance when faced with personal challenges.

We invite you to learn a little more about these amazing students in our community, and hope you find their stories as moving and inspirational as we do!

Sincerely,

Anne Silavs, Superintendent

Yvette

As a person with Down’s Syndrome, Yvette might easily be underestimated by some people, but never by her parents who have relentlessly held high expectations for her and made sure that others did the same. They worked closely with school staff to ensure her social and emotional needs were being met at the same time her academic skills were being developed. Of course, her parents' hopes and her teachers’ efforts alone would not be enough for her to succeed. It would take her own courage and determination. Fortunately, Yvette has never shied away from a challenge or the opportunity to prove to others that she is truly an exceptional person.

Julia

Imagine a childhood overshadowed by adult substance abuse and untreated mental health conditions. This was Julia’s early life, riddled with instability as she moved from one temporary shelter to another. Amidst the impermanence, she suffered academic challenges, social isolation, and a visible disability that made her the subject of ridicule. However, life took a pivotal turn when the mother of a friend recognized her need for stability. In a profound display of compassion, she took Julia into her home and became her foster parent. Today, Julia maintains a 4.0 GPA and aspires to become a psychologist. Her goal is to one day help other children overcome similar circumstances.

Leon

It is impossible not to be inspired by Leon’s love for learning and his boundless enthusiasm for school. Despite facing significant health challenges, debilitating migraines, and related hospitalizations, he approaches each day with courage and a desire to excel. Leon is committed to his studies and demonstrates a thirst for knowledge that is extraordinary in such a young person. He especially enjoys art and immersing himself in the world of literature. His resilience in the face of adversity demonstrates the strength of his character and spirit. Leon’s journey is a powerful example of what can be accomplished when you are determined to succeed.

Dominic

Cheerful, friendly, and determined are a few words that describe Dominic today, but his early days in school were not so easy. As a student with autism, he struggled with social skills and communication which impacted his ability to express himself and interact with others. However, with the love and support of his family and the school community, Dominic has been making tremendous strides. His verbal skills are improving, as well as his ability to manage frustration. He loves sharing his art with others, interacting with his teachers, and learning new things in school. Dominic’s story demonstrates that success is a series of small and patient steps taken over time.

Titus

In need of a change after a difficult year, Titus arrived at a new school with a lot of obstacles to overcome. He had experienced significant losses that cast a dark shadow over him and took a toll on his mental health. However, with the support of others, Titus pushed past his feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. He learned how to advocate for himself and ask for help, which enabled him to heal. He learned to face challenges head-on and embraced missteps as valuable life lessons. As his confidence grew, Titus was able to allow others in and build meaningful friendships with peers. His experience illustrates the power of a support network in moving past hard times. Success is rarely achieved alone.

Charlie

From his earliest days in school, Charlie was a shy and reserved boy, but the challenges of autism were no match for the strength of his spirit. His growth over the years has been nothing short of inspiring, and he has blossomed into a true leader and friend to all at school. Perhaps what sets Charlie apart the most is his gentle spirit and the kindness he shows to others. He shares his enthusiasm for dinosaurs and his passion for sketching with an infectious joy that draws others to him. Charlie’s unique sense of humor and meticulous attention to detail have endeared him to both classmates and staff alike, helping him build strong, supportive relationships at school.

Wyatt

Demonstrating a steadfast commitment to triumph over adversity, Wyatt is a shining star who has risen above the challenges that have come his way. Despite encountering obstacles that would have discouraged others, Wyatt approaches each day with enthusiasm and a positive attitude that has resulted in academic growth and personal achievement. His dedication to his studies never wavers, nor does his kindness and respect for others. His consistent effort to be his best self serves as an inspiration to his classmates and a source of pride for his teachers and support staff. Each and every day, Wyatt demonstrates resilience and the power of perseverance.

Ken

As a young man, Ken faced challenges that would have deterred many. Yet, he chose a different route—one of service and sacrifice. After navigating life's storms, he decided to join the Army to protect the freedoms we hold dear. After his service, he embarked on a new chapter that led him to the Veteran’s Center at Cypress College, where he found a community—a support system that has bolstered his journey every step of the way. Here he discovered his passion for cybersecurity, but it is his role as a dedicated husband, father, and student-veteran that defines him. Despite past difficulties, Ken shows it is always possible to change your path and aspire to excellence.

Litzy

Hard work and outstanding character are traits that have helped Litzy achieve extraordinary growth this year. She is a diligent student who always tries her best. Whether she’s working on a topic that she’s passionate about or a topic she finds challenging, Litzy demonstrates the same strong commitment and work ethic. In fact, she rarely gets discouraged. She always perseveres. Litzy is also a kind and compassionate person. She goes out of her way to help other students at school, making them feel welcomed and included. Litzy’s hard work and exceptional character have served her well and will continue to pave the way for her in school and life.

Andrew

The pathway to success is not always a straight line, and Andrew has come a long way throughout the long and winding roads of his journey. With the guidance of his family and support from teachers and staff, Andrew progressed by leaps and bounds, no longer needing the assistance of a 1:1 classroom aide. His path of self-discovery led him to understand and embrace his neurodiversity, while also learning to appreciate and respect the perspective of others. As a result, he has become a confident and capable young man who is thriving both academically and socially. In addition to Andrew’s academic achievements, he is committed to service and making a positive impact in his community.
