NEW ORLEANS — alignED works at the intersection of education advocacy and grassroots organizing to improve the quality of learning and the learning experience for the children of New Orleans. We have joined with New Orleans parents and teachers in a call to action in support of the School Facilities Preservation Millage.
Our school buildings and educational facilities must be maintained to an excellent standard to foster success in our city's most significant investment — our youth.
The Millage is NOT a NEW TAX; it already exists. Instead, it would seek a renewal to continue its aim to fund the continued preservation of public school facilities in Orleans Parish.
“I’m a proud teacher here at McDonogh 35,” said Shauntrell DeMesme, New Orleans Public School teacher and parent. “It’s up to us to ensure that our schools last.”
The Orleans Parish School Board seeks to renew the current millage that supports school facilities for 20 years at the October 14, 2023 election. Eighty-nine new, rebuilt, refurbished, and preserved school buildings, including schools such as McDonogh 35, Warren Easton, Lake Forest Academy, and Ben Franklin must be maintained to foster a positive education experience.
“At alignED New Orleans, we are proud to support parents who are advocating for their children’s education,” said Dominique Simone, CEO of alignED New Orleans.
Nothing lasts forever, and although federal funds were allocated to rebuild our schools post-Katrina, that was over 18 years ago. Like all houses, our schoolhouses require constant maintenance, repair, improvement, installation of safety measures, and modernization.
Voting YES to the School Facilities Preservation Millage is the right thing to do.
