VOLUMETRIC CONCRETE

If you are associated with the volumetric industry in anyway, then you have probably heard someone say along the way, “these mixers don’t make good concrete”, “volumetric mixing is unproven”, “doesn’t match the accuracy and consistency of a batch plant” or “way too hard to operate”. We are going to break these myths down with facts.

  • These Mixers Don’t Make Good Concrete or Not Enough Mix Time – To make GOOD concrete, you need quality ingredients. The ACI (American Concrete Institute) states that concrete is thoroughly mixed when all aggregates are covered with the cement paste. Proven many times by having to meet engineer specifications for; roadways, airport runways, pervious concrete, bridge decks, soil retention, buildings, etc.
  • Volumetric Mixing is Unproven – In 1964 our founder Harold Zimmerman invented and in 1967 patented the first volumetric (mobile) concrete mixer. Volumetric mixing has over 55 years of proven use in the marketplace. It is used worldwide, including; every US state, by the US military, the Army Corp. of Engineers, DOT's and municipalities.
  • Doesn’t Match the Accuracy and Consistency of a Batch Plant – ASTM-C685 specifications require volumetric mixers to have the same tolerance on all materials as a batch plant. There are more restrictions on ready mix, as the water-cement contact occurs at the plant, not at the job site.
  • Way to Hard to Operate With proper training of operators, typical day to day operation is straight forward and repeatable. An operator does need more training than barrel operator, it’s a batch plant on wheels.

And there you have it. Volumetric Concrete mixing has been successfully used and proven in the marketplace. The Zimmerman family name has been in the volumetric industry from day 1 and is the only family owned and operated manufacturer in the industry today. Its our name on the line with every Zim-Mixer manufactured. We will continue to lead the way with innovation, quality equipment, training/education and customer support.

SAFETY FIRST, ALWAYS

It’s that time of year, everyone is busy, pouring concrete from dawn to dusk . . . and it's easy to try and rush to get everything done. As we all know, when we are in a hurry, that is when things get overlooked and safety may not be a priority. This article is just a reminder that safety must always come first.

  • Never attempt to repair or service the machine while in operation. Reference lockout/tagout practices.
  • Keep entire body clear from all moving parts.
  • Do not operate with any guard or shield removed or damaged.
  • Never walk or stand under the auger.
  • Never climb inside the aggregate bin while in operation.
  • Never enter the cement bin while in operation.
  • Never attempt to operate the machine while in motion, unless equipped with the roll and pour option.

When operating machinery, safety is not just limited to the actions mentioned above. SAFETY IS COMMON SENSE.  Always wear the proper personal protective equipment, don't over exert yourself, don't over extend yourself when on ladders, always use the proper tool for the job, concentrate on your work, look for unsafe acts, watch out for others - remember you are part of a team.
