Born out of Maria’s pen and our playful imaginations, Bijou serves as a gentle reminder of Zentangle’s philosophies for us to embrace both on and off the tile. As we were planning our yearlong celebration, Bijou enthusiastically asked if we would celebrate him during the month of May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. He absolutely cherished sharing 21 days of his philosophies last year.
The United States has been observing Mental Health Awareness during the month of May since 1949. Each year, businesses, organizations, schools, and individuals dedicate this month to acknowledge those affected by mental illness by presenting innovative ideas, events, and programs to support the treatment and prevention of mental illness.
Over the years, we have heard stories from tanglers around the world who have used the Zentangle Method to improve their mental well-being. Whether it be through studies and stories or through personal anecdotes, we know that having a Zentangle practice can reduce stress, increase confidence, and bring out the artist inside all of us.
Bijou believes wholeheartedly in the power of the Zentangle Method and that small, simple, repetitive strokes can make a huge difference. And he knows that with our tangling practice on our tiles, we take all the wisdom we learn and embrace (No Mistakes, Anything is Possible One Stroke at a Time, Gratitude and Appreciation, Slow Down, etc) off
our tiles, and into our lives.
