Greetings UCCB,

I hope that yours was a happy Thanksgiving. Gratitude is a core value of our Christian faith. We give thanks to God for the many blessings we have received. We give thanks for the love we share with family and friends. We give thanks for a spirituality that grows and develops and deepens year by year.

How will your holiday season be different this year? It’s always a challenge to slow our pace from the commercial spin to the devotional intention. Remember the reason for the season is Jesus. Keep God in the center of all the gift giving. Notice Christ’s presence in all the holiday parties. Breathe in the Holy Spirit’s peace whenever your schedule seems too full. God has you in God’s capable loving hands. You will be given whatever you need in God’s perfect timing. Relish the beauty, breathe deeply, listen for the call of the Spirit. It is so good to be together in God’s love. I’ll see you in church!

Hello Merrie Christmas Elves!

Preparing. Shopping. Sorting. Coordinating. Directing. Prioritizing. Organizing. Arranging. Running. Baking. Singing. Decorating, Hanging. Installing. Moving. Lifting. Tugging. Dragging. Sitting. Standing. Greeting. Smiling. Accounting. Advertising. Photographing. Recycling. Auctioning. Bidding. Outbidding. Packing. Unpacking. Setting Up. Clearing Up. Taking Down. Collapsing.

And--Vowing I Will Never to Do This Again--until next year.

Phew........You must all be exhausted (including your significant others)!

Once again, what an amazing job done by this wonderful church community on our 90th Anniversary of the fair!

Many of you broke records from previous years and, despite all of your hard work, you all seemed to be enjoying yourselves--and it showed.

The positive feedback we received from our guests and the overall vibe of the fair was so inspiring. For many, their holidays don't start until they come to our fair!

However, as much fun as it has been for the past 3 years, Jim and I will be retiring our Head Elves Hats and passing the Golden Candy Cane to someone else. Good Luck to the next chairs.

Thank you all for being such a great team to work with.

Now you can reclaim your garages, basements and dining room tables!

Have a great holiday season and warm wishes to all for a peaceful New Year,

Linda & Jim

Generosity 2024

Thank you to all who have submitted your 2024 Generosity pledge, in person or online! If you have not yet indicated your financial pledge for the new year, please refer to your personalized email from the church office (if you pledged last year) or you can click here to access a form you can print, complete and mail and/or drop off at the church office. Forms will be available at church on Sunday, November 26th

New to the idea of pledging? We invite you to participate in the practice of gratitude by making a yearly pledge of financial support to our daily life and ministries. Your commitment in response to God’s blessings makes a tangible impact on our worship, community life, and outreach to our neighbors.

Thank you!

Advent Wreath Workshop

Sunday, December 3 after worship

For many years it has been our tradition to have Advent Wreath workshops the first Sunday in Advent. The wreath consists of 5 candles - a mix of purple, pink and white. The candles represent: Hope, Peace, Joy, Love and Jesus - the white candle which would be lit on Christmas Eve. The circular shape of the wreath represents the infinite, ever-lasting love God has for us.

People bring greens and berries from their surrounding environment. The deacons supply the other tools so you can create a beautiful wreath to take home to your families.

This can be a fun and meaningful project for everyone. There will be goodies and Christmas music. Come join us in the Community Center on Sunday, Dec. 3 after worship.

The Fellowship Ministry Team’s annual Christmas cookie swap and sale will be held on December 10th. Join us and take home an assortment of delicious home-made cookies for the holidays!

Participate as a “swapper” by donating a minimum of four dozen home-made cookies and receive one dozen free cookies in return. The remaining cookies will be available for purchase by the congregation. If you’re interested in being a swapper, please see the sign-up in the Gathering Room or contact Deb Simmons (508-439-2891 or dlrmcgrath@comcast.net) for more information.

The sale will be held in the Gathering Room immediately following worship. You may also order pre-packaged plates with an assortment of cookies that can be picked up during the sale or at a later time. The number of pre-package plates may be limited due to available quantities and should be ordered by December 5th by contacting Deb Simmons.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Community Support Fund.

AB Exchange Needs Winter Clothing

Last month, the people of UCCB generously gave carloads of clothing and diapers to aid an influx of Haitian refugees in central Massachusetts. We now have the opportunity to continue that generosity to benefit migrants that will be housed in Acton starting in mid-November.  In the fall of 2023 the AB United Way, in partnership with the AB Schools, launched the AB Resource Center, a place that connects residents to local resources “so that everyone in Acton and Boxborough feels a sense of belonging and has what they need to thrive”. The AB Exchange, a free clothing and school supply shop, is part of the Resource Center.

I visited the AB Exchange one morning and spoke at length with the staff. The space itself is inviting and classy - it looks like a fashionable boutique. Anticipating the imminent arrival of up to 20 families, many of whom come from Haiti and other warm-weather countries, the AB Exchange is in immediate need of winter clothing and boots in all sizes, for both children and adults. Especially needed at this time are men’s jackets and gloves. All donated items should be new or consignment-quality only; used items should be laundered before donation. If you can help, donations may be dropped off at the AB Resource Center (15 Charter Road) Mon-Thu, 10am - 3pm, or any time at the bin located outside the Administration Building. Thank you for your continued generosity!  (Article submitted by Glynis Hamel)

RIP Medical Debt in the News

The New York Times published a piece this week on the story of a young woman who recently succumbed to ovarian cancer.  Grateful for the excellent medical care she had received throughout her illness, she made plans to hold an online fundraiser to benefit RIP Medical Debt, which buys bundles of uncollected medical debt at a steep discount then forgives the debts of families that are struggling to pay. So far, the young woman’s posthumous campaign has raised enough money to forgive almost $20 million dollars of medical debt.

We at UCCB are in the midst of our own campaign to support RIP Medical Debt. Each November, in honor of longtime member Eleanor Voorhies, we donate the proceeds from the interest of Eleanor’s endowment and supplement that donation with contributions from the UCCB community. We’re collecting until the end of November, so there’s still time to donate. And remember, even a $10 donation can result in the forgiveness of $1000 of medical debt! Checks may be sent to the church, payable to UCCB.  Please put “RIP Medical Debt” in the memo line. Alternatively, visit UCCB’s Giving page . Click the “Donate” button, and in the Special Collections section indicate the amount and put “RIP Medical Debt” in the memo. Thank you for your generosity!

Concord Prison Outreach Holiday Gift Bag Project

For many years now, UCCB has supported the Concord Prison Outreach Holiday Gift Bag Project. This program provides a bag of toiletries, writing materials, a pocket calendar, and a greeting card to people incarcerated in Massachusetts prisons. For some of the men and women who will be served by the project, the gift bag will be the only gift they receive this Christmas.

Until a few years ago we used to support the project by buying the toiletry items ourselves. But because the program has expanded in recent years to serve more than 3000 incarcerated people, CPO now buys the items in bulk and asks for monetary donations. This year, the cost to fill each gift bag is $14, but donations in any amount are greatly appreciated. If you would like to contribute, we will be collecting during the month of December. Checks may be sent to the church, payable to UCCB. Please put “Holiday Gift Bag” in the memo line. Alternatively, visit UCCB’s Giving page. Click the “Donate” button, and in the Special Collections section indicate the amount and put “Holiday Gift Bag” in the memo. Thank you!

Advent Reflection

Come together one time or several times for an hour on zoom to reflect on Hope, Peace, and Love.  We will prayer together, watch short videos with theological reflections, listen to music – particularly from Carrie Newcomer, have time to write and to share some personal reflections as we consider the gifts of this special season in the darkest time of the year.  Contact Betsy Waters at melizabethwaters@gmail.com if you have questions.

Little Free Pantry – Inside Storage!

Have you wondered what the food storage area on the first floor by the elevator is all about? Well, a few months after we dedicated the Little Free Pantry, we decided that a small area to store donated non-perishables made sense. We don’t intend to store a lot of food here, but some storage is helpful after a food drive to support the Little Free Pantry stewardship effort.

Speaking of the stewardship effort, here’s how it works when you sign up to be a steward:

  • First, you do NOT need to personally buy items to contribute to the LFP. If you decide to buy some items to contribute during the week, awesome, but you do not have to.
  •  Ideally, check the pantry at the beginning of the week and then a few times during the week. Demand may outpace supply, so the LFP may empty during your week. That is okay! Irregular supply can moderate consumption and help manage traffic.
  • Please stock from the previously donated items found on the shelving units inside the church first so those items get into circulation and we keep our contributions from passing the expiry date.
  • About those expiration dates - please check them and dispose of expired items or take them home if you are comfortable using them. Thank you!
  • What to place in the pantry?
  • Try to provide a good cross section of items with varying nutrition facts
  • When in doubt, err on the side of providing shelf-stable protein options
  • If you do bring donations, they can go directly into the pantry or onto the inside storage area.

We and our neighbors would benefit from additional stewards so please sign up if you are able for a week or two. Perhaps team up with some neighbors, or with a group you are a part of – book group, scouts, athletic team. You can sign-up by contacting Jenn in the church office. Dates currently available through the end of December 2023.

Many folks in our community are benefiting from its presence – following the motto “Give What You Can. Take What You Need.”  Thank you for showing your love for neighbor in this specific and caring way!

Weekly Bible Study

This Tuesday, November 28 at 10:00 am, Rev. Cindy Maybeck will lead our Bible study about Mark 1:1-8, in which John the Baptist prophesies the coming of Jesus Christ. John understands that Jesus fulfills a promise God made long ago. Looking back into tradition and looking forward into hope happens simultaneously in Christ. There is a new beginning threaded with ancient teaching. This virtual class on Zoom is open to everyone. No experience necessary, but laughter and friendship are encouraged.

10:00 a.m. via Zoom (meeting opens at 9:45 for visiting)
