Greetings UCCB,

This year Ash Wednesday happens to fall on Valentine’s Day. I wonder if God’s Son is God’s Valentine card to all those whom God loves – that would mean you and me! God would be the kid in school who gives a Valentine to every single person in class, not just the popular ones or the pretty ones or the star athletes – there are no favorites, no special sweetheart, each and every one of us is beloved by God. Jesus had this extraordinary talent to gaze into the souls of those he met. He saw people for who they were and loved them no matter what. We are beloved just because we are ourselves. So come to church just as you are, because that is just how God loves you.

Ash Wednesday Service

Wednesday, February 14th at 7:00 pm

Please plan to attend Ash Wednesday worship in the Sanctuary on February 14 at 7:00 pm. West Acton Baptist Church will join us with their new pastor Rev. Christine Keddy. Sounds of Peace will provide music, Rev. Maybeck will preach, and the imposition of ashes will be offered to any who wish to receive. This sacred somber service will provide a lovely beginning to your spiritual observance of the season of Lent.

Wednesday Evenings in Lent

Meeting at the Table, our Wednesday evening Lent program begins Wednesday, February 21 at 6:30 pm. Our first session will be held in Hartman Hall at Acton Congregational Church and led by Rev. Paulo Gustavo Franca. We will gather each week for a simple agape meal of soup, bread and water, sing Taizé songs and join in prayer and conversation with our sister churches South Acton Congregational Church and Acton Congregational Church. The host pastor will lead this program each week which will rotate among our three churches. This Lent study is based on the book Meeting Jesus at the Table by Cynthia Campbell and Christine Coy Fohr. If you are interested in reading the book as well as attending the evening sessions, contact Rev. Maybeck who has a couple of extra copies or you may order the book for yourself online. You may enjoy this reading for Lent, although it is not necessary to read the book to participate in the Wednesday evening suppers and discussions. Please sign up for the sessions that you will attend so that the host church knows how many will meet at the table. For more information click here.

This is the signup for each Wednesday night.

The Color of Compromise: Growing our understanding of the role of white churches in institutional racism.

Jemar Tisby - Hawa Images

As a UCC congregation, we don’t claim to have all the answers. We take pride in asking questions. Using a historical lens, Jemar Tisby is asking us tough questions. The Color of Compromise is inviting us to come together to reflect more deeply on the role and responsibilities of white churches in racism.

Tisby takes us on a historical, sociological, and religious journey: from America's early colonial days through slavery and the Civil War, the tragedy of Jim Crow laws, the victories of the Civil Rights era to today. He discusses the role of church leaders and congregations.

Join the Nurturing Racial Justice Team for learning conversations for four 75 minute sessions. Each session will intersperse small group conversation with video segments. No prior reading is required. You are welcome to read Tisby’s book or watch his historical narrative video-series - The Color of Compromise. If you want to watch the full 4-hour series, we can provide you with access.
