The Difference a Year Can Make

From Refugee to Business Owner

Raza Hassani and his family were amongst the almost 600 individuals that were resettled by the International Institute from Afghanistan in 2021. With the training and education he received in his home country as a mechanic, Raza was able to find work quickly upon his arrival.

Although his ability to find work was quick, the commute downtown was rigorous for the young father. With the help of the International Institute's Community Development Corporation, Raza compiled a business plan and obtained funding for his own small business endeavor. By the fall of 2021, Raza owned and operated his own small business, Raza Auto Sales & Repair.

At the beginning of 2022, the Afghan Support Program launched, helping position St. Louis as a welcoming and opportune location for newly resettled families from around the country. Through the Afghan Support Program, Raza had the opportunity to apply for a $15,000 small business grant. He was awarded the grant in fall of 2022. Hassani has said that he plans to utilize the funds to install a car lift in his auto shop to increase business opportunities. Because of the opportunities awarded to Raza, he also employs two full-time staff members.

The holistic programs and services offered by the International Institute's Community Development Corporation helps people like Raza establish his new life in St. Louis. As we close out the year, your contributions, your generosity can help re-shape lives just like Raza.
