Blast from the Past - 8020 Blivin Street

A photo of 8020 Blivin Street taken from the house across the street in 1947

Joe Schmitt at right in the dining room circa 1950 with some of his children

Current view of 8020 Blivin Street

Look-alike house at 4214 West Solon Road

in Solon Mills

The date “1906” is scratched into the closet wall of the master bedroom at 8020 Blivin Street, the year the house was built by Otto Hasse. The same style house was built at 8014 East Street, discussed here recently, and also at 4214 West Solon Road in Solon Mills, both possibly also built by Hasse.

It is uncertain if Otto and his family actually lived at 8020 Blivin but we do know that Dr. John Furlong and his wife, Emma, moved from 8005 Blivin Street to rent this house sometime in the 1920s. His granddaughter, Jean Foster, remembers her grandfather’s study with bookshelves that held all of his medical books. There were three porches that she would play on, the two front side porches and a back porch. Her grandma, Emma, had large vegetable and flower gardens and kept the house full of fresh-cut flowers. Dr. Furlong died in a car accident in 1934 and Emma moved to Hebron a couple of years later. She needed a house with in-door plumbing and there were none available for rent in Spring Grove at the time.

In 1939 Joe Schmitt retired from farming on Sunset Road after his wife Elizabeth died, and moved here. He invited his niece Emma Freund Jung and her husband, John Jung, to live with him as caretakers when they lost all their money in a bank closure. They took care of all the meals and the maintenance on the house and would walk to St. Peter’s every day for mass.

John & Shirley Sanders bought the home from Joe Schmitt in the 1950s. John and Joan Popelka (Shirley’s sister) rented the house from them in 1965, bought it in 1966, and still call it home today. Joan described it as a house with many doors and windows.

Like 8014 East Street, the house originally had two front porches on either side. John Sanders enlarged and enclosed the porch on the south side and the wood porch on the northwest side was replaced with a concrete floor and steps. You can see the porch decorative brackets and the roof gable peak fretwork on the 1947 photo that is gone today.
