Nick Freund, the blacksmith who lived next door, sold the lot at 2114 Main Street in 1900 to Mathias May (1839-1917) and his wife Margaritha “Margaret” (1837-1921). The Mays had a nice large farmhouse on Miller Road where they farmed and raised their family, but in 1900 they were ready for retirement and moved into their new house in 1901.
On October 28, 1901, their daughter, Elizabeth “Lizzie” married Frank Tonyan. The wedding party posed in front the house with family and friends. Rev. Clement Duerr, the first priest of St. Peter Church, stands on the left in his clerical collar and hat. The new church opened on February 2 that year. Mathias and Margaret can be seen - the first and third from right, and son Frank May, silo builder, is next to his mom.
Lizzie’s sister, Helena, married Fred Meyer on February 13, 1901. They had four children: Anton, Mary, Isabelle and Eugene. When they retired in 1924 they moved to 2114 Main Street after the deaths of Margaret and Mathias. Helena died there 1950 and Fred died in 1951. After their deaths, the house was sold.
Their daughter Mary, who was born in 1905, married George A. May in 1925 at St. Peter’s. (George had the same last name as her mother, Helena, but they don’t appear to be related.) In 1981, thirty years after they sold the house, Mary and George bought it back. Mary lived until 1992 and George lived to be 99 years old, dying in 2001. In a videotaped interview from around 1980, George, with a keen mind, said the kitchen was added to the house in 1934. George’s son, Ken, talked about his grandparents, Helena and Fred, and sitting on the front porch when his grandpa would blow smoke rings from his cigar and Ken would put his finger through them, fond memories for him.
2114 Main Street still retains a lot of its original character but by the 1930s the Mays enclosed the screened porch. Later, the living room window was enlarged into a picture window with two double hung windows and new siding was installed over the fancy gable trim and clapboard siding. The molded concrete blocks that lined the front steps, a nice place to “set a spell”, were changed out to wrought iron railings at some point in time.
