Blast from the Past - 7712 Blivin Street

In 1874, a young William Shotliff came to Spring Grove from Wilmot and opened a wagon/blacksmith shop on Main Street by the grade school. He also had a 27-acre farm south of the bridge on the east side of Blivin Street. In 1900, he sold two acres of the farm along Blivin Street to William Watts. Watts first farmed his parent's homestead on State Park Road and was raising family of five when his wife, 29-year-old Nora, became ill and died. William took it very hard and decided to give up farming and move to Spring Grove. He sold all his farming implements but kept the farm and moved to town.

After he bought the land from Shotliff, he had a new house built at 7712 Blivin by carpenter E.W. Howe of McHenry, who also built Andrew Neish’s house at 8005 Blivin a few years earlier. Watts partnered with Will Seavers in the lumber, coal and feed business down the street. He was elected as a village trustee in 1903. In 1907 he found love again and married Rosalie Small. Later that year he moved his family back to his farm and rented out the Blivin house.

From 1911-1913, Howard and Edith Price Westlake lived there. Howard’s father, James, owned the creamery in Spring Grove, which still stands across the street from the grade school. Howard worked at the Wieland Dairy on Hatchery Road and was the Village Clerk from 1909-1910. In 1913, he and Edith moved to Wisconsin where they took up farming

In 1914, the Watts’ sold the house to John Wagner and his second wife, Anna. His first wife, Katherine “Kate” Brown died in 1895. John sold his family farm in 1901 and built the Spring Grove House Hotel at the corner of Blivin and Hatchery Road by the new train station. 35-year-old Anna Kemmler came that year to assist in managing the hotel. Four years later they were married and then had two sons together. John was mayor of Spring Grove for several terms. He died in 1929 and Anna died in 1945. (The Spring Grove House Hotel and Sample Room next door are no longer standing.)

Danny & Theresa Miller purchased the house from the Wagner family in 1948. In 1975, Danny and Theresa built a new home next door and moved in there. Almost 75 years after they first moved in, 7712 Blivin is still in the Miller family, with Danny & Theresa’s grandson Brad and his wife, Kris, calling it home. The 123-year old home has retained much of it’s original character, but when the front porch was expanded at some point in time, the pretty old porch details went missing.
