Blast from the Past - 7615 Blivin Street
7615 Blivin Street in 2000

|
7615 Blivin Street was built in 1901, possibly for a Mr. Meredith, the first Spring Grove train station agent and telegraph operator for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul railroad. James Foulk was the second agent and he and his wife, Emily Price, moved to 7615 Blivin in 1910.
At that time, only the rail yard and train tracks separated the house from the train station. In the above photo, you can see a worn path in the grass that led from the house to the tracks. (The driveway wasn’t a straight line in those days, either, but went on an angle through the property next door.)
They had three sons, Lawrence, Lowell and Robert, born in 1908, 1912 & 1916. James and Emily had a furnace in for central heat and an inside bath and toilet installed, luxuries at that time. They also bought a 1916 Ford Touring car with side curtains for protection from the elements.
Being located next to the train station and fish hatchery afforded the boys many opportunities for adventures and exploration. They would play run-sheep-run and tag around the stockyards at dusk. The stockyards were where hogs and cattle would stay before or after being loaded or unloaded from the trains. The brothers would also feed frogs to the bass at the hatchery in the summer and ice-skate on the pond in the winter. The pickle factory was by the tracks, too, and they would eat the dill pickles straight from the vats, sometimes coming home with a stomach ache.
In the 1920s or 30s, a Ford Tri-motor plane landed in the field behind the house when the pilot and co-pilot got lost in a snowstorm and needed gas. And around 1923, a freight train accident occurred in front of the house in the middle of the night, which hauled a box car down the tracks for a mile. Strangely, none of the family was awakened.
James died in 1947 at the age of 75. Emily moved to the Richardson farm on English Prairie to live with her sister’s family. She did in 1964. In 1959 she sold the house to Arnold Buschman. He owned the Spring Grove Cash and Carry Lumber store that was built between her house and the tracks. For a time, the house was used as an office for the lumberyard. It was then a rental for many years and is now an owner-occupied home again.
The stately farmhouse retains all of the original exterior character, with a wonderful wrap-around porch and wood details. Lawrence visited the home in 2000 when he was 92 years old, and it still had all of its beautiful original interior trim and doors. He went upstairs to see if names they had written on the wall behind a closet door, and happily they were. The barn where they kept cows to milk also still stood behind the house, bringing back many happy memories for him, too.
