You can still help! Donations will still be accepted as there will be construction costs in the spring, and a future phase two that would include additional equipment.

Blast from the Past - 8103 Blivin Street

8101 Blivin in 1952 before reconstruction

8101 Blivin Street after work was done

The Tinney house with circa 1950 Buick Sedan

8101 Blivin Street today

Margaret (Maggie) Nett Feltes purchased 8101 Blivin Street from William and Frances Shotliff in 1922. Maggie was divorced from her husband Peter Emil Feltes. Her brother, Nick Nett, owned an auto repair and filling station at 1923 Main Street. She had three children, Marcella, 23, Charles Vincent,16, and Daniel, 8.

In 1928, Vincent married Edith Ehlert from Richmond in a beautiful spring ceremony in St. Peter’s Church. The couple lived in the house and in 1930 their baby daughter was born and lived there, too. They then moved next door into 8103 Blivin, (which we learned about last week), in the “upstairs flat” when Byron and Kate Orvis lived there. Vincent sold auto accessories at first, maybe for his Uncle Nick, and later worked as a painter and decorator for a fellow in McHenry. He became seriously ill in October 1938, and spent a month in the hospital. A benefit dance was held at the town hall for him, but he died in November of that year.

Margaret lived on in the house and died in 1951. Father John Daleiden, from St. Peter’s Church, was the executor for Margaret’s estate. An estate sale was held, and he sold the house to Frank and Mary Tinney for $3,000 on December 1, 1951. The Tinney’s were neighbors who lived in the next-door house to the south. 8101 Blivin was in dilapidated condition and the Tinney’s rehabbed it for a cost of $18,000.

The home was completely gutted. A one-story wing addition on the north side of the back of the house was torn down and a two-story addition constructed in the same place. The front porch was taken down and a small portico built over the front door instead. Two double hung windows on the porch were replaced with one picture window, all the rage for many years, starting in the early 1950s.

Frank and Mary Tinney moved into the newly renovated house in August 1952. About 30 years later, Frank died, and Mary followed on February 17, 1985. In 1986, the house was sold to Paul & Patty Glauser. They built a new front porch giving the house back its original looking façade and the Glauser’s a nice place to sit to watch the world go by. The same tree in front is still shading the house after all these years.
