Blast from the Past - 1914 Main Street

John and Gertrude Jung Nimsgern with seven surviving children

1914 Main Street

John Nimsgern was born in France in 1844 and came here with his parents at the age of nine. They came directly to Illinois and to "German Prairie" where the Spring Grove Estates Subdivision is now. Gertrude Jung (Young) was also of German descent and was born on German Prairie in1853. John and Gertrude married in 1870 and had 14 children together, although seven died in infancy.

In 1902, they retired from farming and moved to downtown Spring Grove during the building boom and settled in at 1914 Main Street. Gertrude died on November 12, 1910, after suffering a stroke. Although John was able to be at her funeral, he had dealt with medical issues for many years and died nine days later.

The house was passed down to son Matthias (Matt) Nimsgern and his wife Mary Pittges, who had five children. Matt worked as the custodian at the Illinois State Fish Hatchery (now Hatchery Park) in Spring Grove from 1938 – 1950 and died at age 88 in 1965. Mary lived in the home until she died at age 90 in 1976.

Their daughter Bernice Josephine was born on March 10, 1918, in Spring Grove. In 1944, she married Robert Lent and in the 1950s they owned and operated the Royal Blue store at 1928 Main Street. She also worked as a cook for the Spring Grove school district and Bob was a Conservation Officer and custodian at the Fish Hatchery from 1966 until the early 1970s.

Their son, Lawrence, “Larry” was born on April 15, 1923. He served in WII, married in 1948, worked as a barber in town before moving to McHenry around 1950 to open the Riverside Barber Shop. He remembered spring water running through a basin in the basement which kept the watermelon cold in the summer and falling asleep to fiddler music coming into his bedroom window at night from the Town Hall across the street when dances were going on.
