Dear Village Resident,
What a beautiful night for the Friday Night Fish Boil!
Thank you, Spring Grove, for the great turnout at our Fish Boil for Hatchery Park the weather surely cooperated! It was great to see so many of you for a good old-fashioned community event.
We served over 600 meals, nearly beating our highest number to date and raised much needed funds for Hatchery Park. We had an incredible turnout with many who came to eat dinner staying to watch The Judson Brown Band!
This event couldn’t have been possible without the help of many volunteers, local businesses and individual support. I would like to thank all of them for their continued support of our community.
Click here for photos from the event!
This Monday! Our 4th of July celebration starts with Bella Cain on July 3rd in Horse Fair Park at 8pm, there will be food trucks and beverages for all ages beginning at 4pm. Our annual parade will be Tuesday at noon. The celebration will end with a big fireworks display at Thelen park Tuesday night.
Hope everyone can get out and enjoy the festivities.

Grass in the Streets
Just a reminder that blowing and/or leaving grass clippings in the road is prohibited by Village Ordinance. Grass clippings are not only unsightly, but dangerous for motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians, clog storm sewers and waterways, and cause grass to grow in small cracks that eventually break up the street. If you have someone mow your lawn for you, please notify them of this ordinance. Municipal citations can be issued.

|
Overnight Parking
Just a friendly reminder, Village Ordinance 13/2-1307 prohibits parking on the street between 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. Signs have been posted throughout the village to remind residents and visitors of the ordinance. This ordinance covers all public village roadways.
The police department may give temporary permission, up to five (5) consecutive days, to park overnight on the street due to visitors, driveway repair, etc. Please note that the vehicle must otherwise be legally parked (not in violation of fire lanes, fire hydrants, post snowfall restrictions, etc.)
Click here to request temporary permission on-line.

Blast from the Past - 1911 Main Street
| |
The west side of 1911 Main Street in 1926 with the Wagner family who were neighbors | |
|
Joe and Clara Brown resided at 1911 Main Street in the nineteen teens before they purchased Math Rauen’s Tavern at 2008 Main Street around 1920 moved in above the bar. They renamed the bar Joe Brown’s Tavern. In 1927 Joe was arrested for serving liquor during prohibition then served soda & ice cream until the end of prohibition in 1933.
After serving in WWI, Alfred Richardson moved into the home in the 1920s. He managed the Spring Grove Bank at 1927 Main Street. He was away on his honeymoon in 1926 when the bank was robbed. Known as “Richie” to his many friends, he liked to play tricks on people. He moved when he left to work at the Ringwood Bank. (He was not related to the Richardson’s of Spring Grove and unfortunately died by suicide in 1934 when he was 37. He was in ill health from injuries suffered in the war.)
Lillian Sanborn, who was born in 1878 and never married, lived here after she worked as a teacher in Chicago in the 1920s and returned to Spring Grove when she retired, probably in the 1940s. Her grandparents, John Sanborn & Mehitable Sanborn, were one of the first settlers in Spring Grove, coming around 1836. Lillian left $400 in trust for perpetual care of the graves in the English Prairie Cemetery where she is buried with her parents John Winthrop Sanborn and Olive Walker. She died in Woodstock in 1966.
Other later occupants include John and Sue Niles and, starting in the early 2000s, James & Gugge Glaser, who called this place home on the advice of their friend, Patty Anderson, whose family’s law office is situated in the old bank building where Alfred once worked.
