Dear Friends and Neighbors,

This week we announced criminal charges against a Brooklyn man who is accused of attempted murder and other crimes for allegedly hitting an NYPD officer with a stolen car.

Police in Corona were investigating a report of a stolen car when they spotted the defendant in an Infiniti sedan, who then backed onto the sidewalk and nearly struck an adult and child. The defendant then put the vehicle in drive and allegedly struck a responding police officer, who was forced to jump on an adjacent parked car.

The defendant then sped off -- allegedly hitting several cars including two unmarked police vehicles -- and drove the wrong way on a one-way street.

We are grateful that the officer is recuperating from his injuries. I thank the members of the NYPD for their extraordinary work in apprehending this individual, who was ultimately captured on a nearby rooftop.

The defendant is now facing up to 40 years in prison, if convicted.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz

Queens District Attorney

Cases of Interest

  • A Bronx man was indicted for the attempted murder of a 23-year-old subway commuter who was stabbed while exiting the station in July.
  • Three defendants were charged with kidnapping, robbery, burglary and other crimes for a home invasion robbery in Douglaston.
  • A 40-year-old man was indicted for attempted murder and assault in the random stabbings of a motorist pumping gas and a subway commuter in Ozone Park.

Illegal Scooters Removal

Detectives from my office collaborated with the NYPD on recent scooter removal initiatives in both Astoria and Jamaica to take illegal vehicles off the street.

These joint operations with the 103rd and 114th Precincts resulted in the removal of 53 scooters, most unregistered and parked on the sidewalk, as part of our commitment to addressing community safety concerns.

Tuesday's operation in Jamaica also resulted in two arrests, one for possession of a forged instrument and another for driving with a suspended license.

More than 650 scooters have been removed from Queens streets so far this year as part of our ongoing efforts.
