Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I joined Bronx DA Darcel Clark, Suffolk DA Ray Tierney, legislators and community members this week in support of the Deadly Driving bill (S. 3135/A174), which aims to close a dangerous loophole in relation to the arrest and prosecution of drugged drivers.

The United States is experiencing an unprecedented increase in traffic fatalities and Queens is seeing an alarming uptick in auto collisions that result in serious physical injury or death.

I formed a dedicated Vehicular Crimes Unit last year to ensure that every fatal crash is thoroughly investigated and, when warranted, prosecuted by a specialized group of attorneys with expertise in the unique issues that arise in these cases.

But the fact is, we need policies that reflect the real threat and harm these preventable crimes have on our families and communities.

This bill will fix the vehicle and traffic law by, among other things, allowing officers to field test drivers who may be impaired by drugs. I was proud to lend my support.

My top priority will always be keeping you and your loved ones safe.

In Friendship,

Melinda Katz
Queens District Attorney
Cases of Interest
  • Detective Jonathan Diller's alleged shooter was arraigned on an indictment we secured for first-degree murder for Diller's homicide and first-degree attempted murder for trying to shoot a sergeant present at the scene on March 25.
  • A New Jersey man was arraigned on criminal charges for allegedly threatening to "shoot up" JFK airport in video recordings sent to his estranged wife, who had just landed.
Cold Case
If you have information regarding the death of Jerwaine Gorman, shot and killed in Jamaica nine years ago, contact NYPD Crimestoppers by calling 800-577-TIPS, or through the online form.

It is never too late for justice.
Fencing Operation
A recent investigation by my office and the NYPD led to the recovery of more than $500,000 in stolen items from Macy’s, Victoria’s Secret, Lululemon and other major retailers. The items were openly displayed and re-sold at less than half their retail value inside the McKlain Collection Boutique in Ridgewood.

Two defendants are charged with criminal possession of stolen property for their alleged role in the fencing operation.

The merchandise recovered as part of this raid was allegedly stolen from retail stores across the country by sophisticated teams of thieves who divert profits into their own pockets.

Through meticulous investigations like these, and by utilizing our Merchants Business Improvement Program, I am committed to addressing the welfare of our local economy, which keeps this borough thriving.
Court Tour
My youth empowerment team organized a court tour recently for students of the New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science IV in Rochdale.

Thank you to Supreme Court Justice Kenneth Holder for sharing his valuable insight into the legal system and his role as a judge. It was an enriching experience that I hope will spark a passion for law and justice in these young visitors.
Job & Resource Fair
Staff from the Community Partnerships Division and paralegals in my office joined Kevin Livingston of the nonprofit 100 Suits for 100 Men organization for a job and resource fair.

The event provided a great platform for job seekers to connect with potential employers and explore various resources available to them.
Mother's Day
Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers, grandmothers and strong women who selflessly help raise our children!

This weekend, let us we pay tribute to the incredible women who have shaped our lives with their unwavering love and support. I hope you will take the time to honor their legacy and create new memories filled with love and gratitude.
