Social Issues Readings




We use our social issues readings section to share articles on current events and analysis on a variety of topics.
Tax Clinics

Women’s Centre volunteers can prepare taxes for low-income women. While doing the taxes, volunteers provide information on how to access associated benefits such as:

  1. GST rebate
  2. Canada child tax benefits
  3. provincial child health benefits
  4. assistance with other forms

C-BRAID Lab: Seeking Indigenous Participants

C-BRAID, based out of the University of Calgary, is running a research project this summer with the goal of deepening the understanding of the mental health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous adolescent populations.

Families who participate fully will receive a $350 total compensation for approximately 5 hours of time (split into two visits) at the Foothills Medical Centre and 90 minutes of participation from home. There is also a limited participation option, with families receiving $150 for 4 hours of commitment.

Jewelry Making Workshop

Are you looking to learn a new skill, connect with other women, build community? Then this workshop is for you. Join Wafa Ali in a jewelry making workshop. Come for the fun, all while learning a new skill. All materials will be provided and participants will leave with the jewelry they make.

Indigenous History Month at the Centre
June is National Indigenous History Month, a time dedicated to honouring the unique achievements and the history of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities across Canada.

We've highlighted Indigenous-centred events that we will be hosting this June, and we hope you can join us. 
Buffalo Chats - Indigenous Conversation Circle Wednesday, June 21, 5 P.M. - 7:30 P.M.
In the spirit of Reconciliation, this event will be a circle conversation with women about strength and resilience, grounded in the lived experiences of our hosts and those present. This will be an opportunity for learning and relationship-building and one active step towards Reconciliation for those attending. We are excited to have two incredible women and community builders, Cathy Lynn and Gabrielle Weaselhead, to host this conversation.

Around the Fire
Tuesday, June 27, 5:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M.
First in the series of culture through stories. The drum is a sacred instrument in many cultures. To Indigenous peoples, the drum represents the heartbeat of the people, animals and Mother Earth. Join us as we explore and learn about Indigenous stories using the drum.

Storytime with Little Red Reading House
There are also events for your little ones at the Women's Centre. Join the Centre and the Little Red Reading House mobile library for a session of stories and fun activities! Storytime is Friday, June 16, from 10 A.M. - 12:30 P.M. at the Women's Centre.

This event is open to all women-identifying parents or guardians and their children (ages 1 - 8 years).

June Workshops

Join the Women’s Centre Cooking Club! The group will meet to plan recipes, effective budgeting, and participants get to take home 2-3 days of dinner for the family. Cooking will be done in Carya Community Kitchen in the East Village community. Limited spots are available!

Join us at the Women’s Centre for relaxing Yoga sessions! We will enjoy physical, mental, and spiritual practices to calm the mind. This event series is perfect for all abilities.

Come to the Women’s Centre and enjoy our beautiful community garden all while doing some art.

This is a conversation group for women to practice French for fun. This program is a free in-person program for beginner learners of French.
