All of you are invited to come to the Budget Planning Meeting, following a light lunch, at 11:45 after the service this Sunday, April 21. You will learn and be able to comment on what the Budget Team has proposed for 2024-25, starting in July. With somewhat less than our goal pledged, will some changes in funding will be needed? What would be affected? The Budget revised after this session will be presented at the Annual Meeting for Members to vote on for approval. That will take place after the Saturday worship service on May 18 – being held on that day due to the Sunday April 19 Long Beach Pride Parade.

Youth Faith In Action on Earth Sunday
Celebrate Earth Day Hanging With Our Peeps…Little Chicks To Cuddle!

On Sunday, April 21, children and youth will put their faith into action with one of a series of monthly activities benefiting others. The Faith In Action Sunday will involve working in our garden with Ground Education, a local garden education group which is the church's community donation recipient for this month. We will make strawberry jam, plant seeds, and learn about how chickens help a garden. There will be live chicks to cuddle!

Freedom’s Interdependence with Rev. Lissa and Worship Associate Karen Mourikas
This year the Jewish festival of Passover, with its themes of freedom and liberation, is celebrated in the shadow of devastating months of painful violence which has deeply divided our interfaith and Unitarian Universalist community. We explore Passover’s themes of freedom with storytelling, song and reflections seeking to build bridges of interfaith solidarity and Unitarian Universalist moral clarity to call for a lasting and permanent ceasefire.

Next meeting Sunday April 21. The UU Young Adult Network ages 18-35 meets on 3rd Sundays in the lounge after the service. This is a small group ministry creating a beloved community of witnessing our experience together, and planning group activities. The Young Adults are invited to participate in the Earth Day Celebration events in the congregational community after meeting as a group. UU Young Adults for Climate Justice (UUYACJ) is back with its third annual Movement Training workshop series! You can attend just one, or all of them! All young adults (18-35) are invited to join us every Saturday in April (3pm ET/12pm PT) for workshops led by activists and organizers from a wide variety of movements. We’ll learn tools, strategies, and practices for building and sustaining justice movements. If you are not a young adult, help spread the word. Bio: Zoë Johnston (she/her) is a lifelong Unitarian Universalist currently based in Philadelphia. She works as the Network Coordinator for Unitarian Universalist Young Adults for Climate Justice, a caucus of the UU Ministry for Earth. Zoë is also a graduate student studying International Peace and Conflict Resolution. Her work is focused on building intentional communities that experience the full complexity of relationships, care and conflict, in the pursuit of liberation. Zoë loves to read, crochet, cook delicious food, and is an aspirational gardener.

The Budget Hearing is a meeting introducing the 2024-2025 draft Budget to members and friends. The Budget Hearing provides an opportunity to ask questions, express support and concerns, provide suggestions and make recommendations. After the Budget Hearing, Finance will make final adjustments to the Budget prior to moving the proposed Budget forward to the Board and prior to Congregational approval at the
Annual Meeting held on Saturday, May 18, 2024.

Come one, come all! Invite your friends! UUCLB is having a Poetry Evening on Sunday, April 28 at 4:00pm. Featured poets will be our own Mauricio Moreno, Nancy Woo, and three poets from outside the UUCLB community. This is a Poet’s event—there will be an open mic and we encourage people to recite their original work. This all church event in coordination with National Poetry Month is sponsored by the Bipoc Affinity Group and supported by the UUCLB Music and Arts Committee.
The open mic will be monitored to control appropriateness of material, including length of time. Sign ups for the open mic will be limited to those who sign up on the day of the event (or prior). Best way is to reach out to us through Bipoc.chair@uuclb.org.

Through the Senate and the Assembly, through the ups and downs, we hung on, grounded by our faith, and our conviction to build an LA county, and a California with equity and abundance for all.

Extra Parking for CHURCH SERVICES (Sundays only)
Our East and West Parking lots are now at capacity. That is good news; people are finding us! For overflow parking on Sundays, extra parking is available in the Los Altos Medical center Lot at 1777 N Bellflower Blvd. We urge anyone who can to come a little early to park in the Los Altos Medical Center Lot. This will make us more welcoming to newcomers who can find space in our more accessible lots. Directions to the overflow parking lot:
- From the West on Atherton pass the church lots and turn right into the alley after the apartments.
- From the North on Bellflower take a right into the Medical Center entrance just after the Arco Station.
- From the South on Bellflower, a long left turn lane makes for an easy left turn into Los Altos Medical Center Parking.

Ground Education
| |
|
For Ground Education the natural world is a classroom. Teaching in elementary school gardens and green spaces, they aim to nurture students’ academic, physical, and emotional well-being. Their vision is to bring thinking, exploring, and learning in nature to all the local elementary schools.
Ground Education also reaches out to educators with curriculum and has college internship opportunities. In 2023 9,500 students learned through Ground Education’s nature based curriculum; there were 2,700 classes; nineteen garden sites were planted and maintained by staff; and seven interns from Cal State Long Beach were mentored. The program is growing: 33% of all LBUSD elementary students were reached by Ground Education, a 46% growth rate from 2021-2022. Our RE program has also benefitted from some visits and lessons from Ground Education.
Our social justice collection takes place on the second Sunday, but you can support Ground Education until the last Sunday of the month, by mail, text, or online.
