2021 Special Recognition Awards
We are excited to announce the selection of the Special Recognition Awards for 2021! The Preservation Dallas board votes on the awards and this year selected Rene Schmidt to receive the Dorothy Savage Award, Julian Calderone for the Craftsmanship Award, Candy’s Dirt to receive the Preservation Education Award, and two awards will be given for Spirit of Preservation with one going to the Old Red Museum of Dallas County History and Culture and the other going to the Park Cities Historic Preservation Society and the Rees-Jones family for saving the Elbert R. Williams House.

The Preservation Achievement Awards ceremony this year will once again be virtual and is planned for late June with the date to be announced soon.
The Historic House Specialist seminar
is coming up soon!

Become an authority of historic Dallas neighborhoods! This popular seminar includes lectures from local experts on architectural history and styles of Dallas, historic and conservation district designations, sustainability, how to research the history of a building, and more! Participants receive a copy of Virginia McAlester’s A Field Guide to American Houses and a complimentary one year Individual membership to Preservation Dallas. This seminar will be held virtually over a day and a half.

The workshop is $175. The class is open for anyone to participate, but realtors can receive 8 hours MCE credit. For those wanting to receive credit, log in to your MetroTex Association of REALTORS account to register online, or at 214-540-2751. Braniff International Hostess College Listed in the National Register
While speeding along the Tollway you may have noticed an interesting building visible near Wycliff Avenue with the caged balconies. The unusual building was built in 1968 as the home for the Braniff International Hostess College where Braniff expertly trained their “hostesses” for flight service.

Last month the building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is the only Braniff related building in Dallas with that designation. It was listed for its significance in association with Braniff along with women’s history. According to the Texas Historical Commission, “Braniff International Hostess College is the only extant resource in Texas associated with female flight attendants' unique labor experience and whose collective efforts in the late-1960s and early 1970s affected meaningful change to the profession.”

Plans are underway to convert the building into a hotel by Centurion American, the same developers as The Statler. Listing in the National Register will also allow the building to qualify for state and federal rehabilitation tax credits. For more information on the National Register listing go here.
Tenth Street Residential Organization Looking for a Project Director
The Tenth Street Residential Organization is a new organization whose mission is to promote, enhance, and preserve the City of Dallas Landmark Tenth Street Historic District. The organization’s immediate goals include fundraising, strategic planning and board development. They are looking for a Project Director to help them achieve their goals; work on public policy regarding Tenth Street, address the demolition of historic structures and preservation of the historic character; and build relationships with the public, other community organizations and the City of Dallas. Great turn out for the Fair Park Scavenger hunt!
Thank you to everyone that participated in the Fair Park Scavenger Hunt! We loved seeing the answers flow in from the different teams. And congratulations to Team Fabulous Four (pictured) for winning the hunt! Close Runner-up was Team Clueless Crew and third place was Michelle Walker and Chris Edgemon.

We hope all those who participated enjoyed the experience and look forward to more PDYP events in the future!
In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Dallas Mexican American Historical League (DMHAL) will have a multimedia exhibit at the Latino Cultural Center from September 15 to October 16. The exhibit will focus on Mexican American life in Oak Cliff.

To prepare for the exhibit, they are seeking photos and interviews that will help them highlight the Mexican American community in Oak Cliff. For more information on what they are looking for and how to submit photos or information click here for a flyer on the project.
Submit a Proposal for the 2022 Legacies Dallas History Conference
The organizers of the 23rd Annual Legacies Dallas History Conference are soliciting proposals from both professional and lay historians on topics related to the theme: “Dining and Drinking in Dallas.” The Conference will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at the Dallas History & Archives Division, on the 7th floor of the Central Library downtown.

Nothing is more fundamental to any society than food and drink. The first settlers in North Central Texas were farmers, and agriculture remained the predominant way of life for most people for decades. Today, Dallas is known as a center for dining, with a wide variety of ethnic cuisines, farm-to-table restaurants, and creative entrepreneurs. Microbrewers continue a tradition dating to the 1870s, when German immigrants opened breweries and beer gardens.

Papers presented at the conference might focus on pioneer foodways, Texas liquor laws, food and beverages invented in Dallas or popularized at the State Fair, innovative chefs and founders of restaurants, the growth of grocery store chains, convenience stores, and fast-food outlets, or memorable restaurants and bars of the past.  

All papers must be based on original research and must not have been presented or published elsewhere. Those interested in presenting papers should submit a brief summary of their proposal by July 31, 2021, by email to LegaciesDHC@gmail.com. Those selected will be notified by August 31, 2021.
Libraries are opening May 4!
Exciting news for those that would like to research in person again! Now that the public libraries are opening up you will be able to schedule an appointment to do research in the Dallas History and Archives. Appointments will be required and you can set one up by emailing texas@dallaslibrary.org to start the process. They will send you information on how to make the appointment, preparing for your visit, what to expect with your appointment, and a form to fill out. You may also submit reserach requests online if you don't want to go into the library just yet. To do that, use the same email above and send in your research request with the information you are looking for and they will get back to you.

PRESERVATION ISSUES
Landmark Commission Ad Hoc Committee – The Landmark Commission Ad Hoc Committee has completed their work on developing proposals to improve the review process for work to properties in Landmark districts. The proposals have been sent to stakeholders and historic districts neighborhoods for review. Preservation Dallas will hold a public meeting on May 25th at 6:00 pm to receive feedback on the proposals. Click here to download information about the meeting and the proposals.

Fair Park Community Park - Fair Park First has been working on plans for the Community Park to be located in the parking lot near the Dos Equis Pavilion. This week there was a community meeting to solicit input on what activities the park should be designed for. The consultants on the project are going to take those recommendations and prepare plans for the park to be reviewed during a public meeting on June 1 at 6:30 at the Band Shell in Fair Park. It will be an interactive meeting to receive input on the design. The target date for the opening of the park is spring of 2024.

Texas Legislative Session - Preservation Dallas has been tracking bills that have been moving through the state legislature along with Preservation Texas and other allied organizations. There are two bills in particular which Preservation Dallas has commented on. One is HB 3971 which we are in favor of as it would require appraisal districts to take into account historic district status when appraising properties. This is an effort to try and address the concern of many historic district property owners whose land valuations are eclipsing their improvement value. The bill was authored by Rep. Meyer whose districts covers East Dallas. It has made it out of committee but does not have a companion bill in the senate. The other bill is HB 1474 which would allow property owners to opt-out of new historic districts and require a super-majority vote to keep them in along with exempting all religious property from new historic districts. Preservation Dallas is opposed to this bill as it would potentially create "Swiss cheese" historic districts which would make it difficult to review and enforce historic district regulations for new districts. The bill was authored by Rep. Cyrier and it has also made it out of committee. There is an identical companion bill of SB 1585 introduced by Senator Hughes which has made it out of committee. It was sent back to the House this week.

Historic Resources Survey – The consultants have completed their fieldwork for the survey and compiling the information for review. There will be a virtual public meeting on May 18 for the public to review the fieldwork and ask questions about the survey. More information about the meeting will be sent out soon.

Well, we are making it just under the wire with the newsletter this month! It has been a very busy month for us and will be so for the next couple of months as we get ready to close out this fiscal year, which ends June 30. There is a lot to do between now and then including completing our yearly audit, finalizing the slate of nominees for the 2021 to 2022 board, holding another HHS class, working on the budget for 2021-2022 for the board to review in May, preparing for the Annual Meeting and the 2021 Preservation Achievement Awards event, and more. And that doesn’t count our advocacy work with several ongoing issues we are tracking and working on along with new ones that pop up weekly. I have also noticed that my meeting calendar has been a lot fuller with a rise in virtual meetings. With it becoming so easy to do, it seems that everyone wants to have virtual meetings. Some days I’ll have six hours or so of virtual meetings. And for some reason my Tuesdays have now become the defacto day of meetings for me.

I have some great news to pass on regarding two of our former Preservation Dallas board members who are being recognized for their outstanding work. The first one is Marsha Prior who works for the City of Dallas as a preservation planner. She is the winner of the first annual Randolph B. “Mike” Campbell Award for the Most Exceptional Entry to the Handbook of Texas Online in 2020. Her entry on Freedmantown/North Dallas was selected out of 169 eligible entries written for the online Handbook. Criteria for the award included quality of research, significance of the topic and readability. To read her entry go here. The second one is Nancy McCoy of McCoy Collaborative Preservation Architecture. In addition to being a past board member, she is also a past president of Preservation Dallas. She has been selected to receive the 2021 History Award from the Dallas Historical Society for her extensive work as a preservation architect in the commercial, cultural, residential, parks, and educational sectors. The Dallas Historical Society will host its 39th Awards for Excellence in November. For more information on their awards and to view the other winners click here.
