Stay tuned every month as we profile our amazing staff!

Next Month: Andy Rice, Director of Marketing & Communications
Rachel Rocco - Development Director
Rachel began work in the music industry in the 80’s on a summer student grant with the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Since then she spent many years bringing wide ranging cultural events to life in many parts of Canada. She believes that a thriving artistic and cultural life is vital to community wellbeing.
5 Questions for Rachel:
1. What brought you to Powell River?
We needed a change from city life, but wanted to stay near the coast; take a birds-eye view of the lower BC coast and Powell River really stands out: a bustling little town, surrounded by nature but without pretense. It was easy to choose, existing for its citizens rather than pruning itself for tourism. There's unexpected arts and cultural happenings, 32 swimmable lakes and people with pioneering spirit.

2. What is it about PRISMA that inspires you?
Lately I have been thinking about the many ways PRISMA enriches our local culture and the people here, and the most amazing thing to me is how people who have never met, who have the common language of music, get together in an orchestra and play.

3. What’s your perfect day?
Waking early and watching the sun come up while drinking a hot cup of coffee and a few glasses of our delicious water, doing qigong practice in nature, going on an adventure with my camera, eating at least two delicious meals, watching a fabulous movie on the big screen, talking and laughing with interesting friends, listening to a good song, piece of music or podcast and settling in with a good mood.

4. Tell us 3 fun facts about yourself!
  • I was a junior barrel racing champion, Starlight the quarter horse I trained with was the real champion.
  • In 1985, I went on the an International Peace March through Central America: From Panama to Mexico.
  • I am half way through my training to become a Master of Medical Qigong.

5. If you could meet anyone, from any point in time, who would it be and why?
I would like to have dinner with my paternal and maternal grandmothers;
I have a lot of questions for them and never knew either of them as an adult.

"I won a one year contract with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in September and have moved to Buffalo from Toronto and have started playing with them since then... It is a great learning experience and I love my colleagues." ... Did we mention he is the orchestra's youngest member!
Kelsey Sham, harp (PRISMA 2018)

"Lots has happened since this past summer at PRISMA! I wanted to let you know that my school orchestra (Oberlin Orchestra) performed on January 19 at Carnegie Hall — a dream come true! Program included O’Regan’s 'Triptych', Stravinsky’s 'Les Noces', Ogonek’s 'All These Lighted Things', and Debussy’s 'La Mer'."
The maestro heads to Spokane
