Dear friend of the Jonnycake Center of Westerly,

With the arrival of fall, we've made many changes at the Center, enabling us to continue to safely serve clients, offer treasures from the Thrift Store, and connect children in need with presents and food for the holidays.

Our Social Services department has been especially busy welcoming clients back for some on-site services and arranging our large-scale holiday-time Adopt-a-Family program. In light of circumstances with the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's program will look different from years past, but we are hoping to keep the program as magical as possible, especially with more families than ever struggling around the holidays. Please find an update further in this newsletter for how this year's program has changed, and how you can help.

The Thrift Store has welcomed many new staff members, added additional open hours on Mondays, and expanded opportunities for the public to donate the wares that are sold to help fund our Social Services and Food Pantry. While we encourage shoppers to take advantage of our store's affordable clothes, accessories, furniture, housewares, electronics, and kids' activities, we are taking every precaution to keep our store a clean, safe place to shop amid the pandemic. For shoppers who have adjusted to our policies, we cannot thank you enough – your continued cooperation ensures that our on-site Food Pantry will remain protected from illness, and that shoppers, volunteers, and employees can enjoy a sanitary environment.

The Food Pantry has transitioned from summer service to fall service and is now offering food for school-age children during the weekends. With the transition, Pantry staff are now able to accept food donations without an appointment on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays between 12pm and 3pm. The Pantry concluded its weekly 2020 Farmer's Market in mid-September, after having harvested 2,500 pounds of produce from the Jonnycake Community Garden in Charlestown, RI. We look forward to operating the market free for neighbors in need again next summer. Watch for details in spring 2021!

With the coming of winter, we are sparing no effort to make sure we're fully staffed, equipped, and ready to serve our community if the impacts of the pandemic worsen. We have been fortunate that we never had to pause or cancel our Social Services or Food Pantry operations, and we hope to continue this very important work of supporting and uplifting the most vulnerable among us.

Read on to find our latest news, hours, and policies across all Jonnycake departments. Please let me or the Jonnycake team know if there is anything we can do to assist you or someone you know. With you by our side, we continue #SustainingCommunityTogether!

  • The Social Services office is currently open Monday afternoons (12pm to 3pm) and mornings on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays (9am to 12pm).
  • Clients arriving for the Food Pantry or Power Pack check-ins, or receiving Vouchers for the Thrift Store, can visit the Social Services office during open hours for assistance.
  • Most Jonnycake Social Services are offered remotely, but some on-site services are temporarily suspended. A staff person is available via phone during all open hours to provide resources or answer questions.
  • If you are new to our services, or are in need of financial assistance, please call (401) 377-8069, Option 1, or email scote@jonnycake.org.
  • Our Social Services department is collaborating with Age Friendly Westerly, an initiative among non-profits and care-providers to provide important, relevant information to older adults in our community. Social Services Program Director Sarah Cote participated in a PSA about community resources for local seniors. Watch the video here! Many more videos can be found on Age Friendly Westerly's YouTube channel.
THRIFT STORE:
  • To protect the Food Pantry and the safety of shoppers, volunteers, and staff, new Thrift Store shopping policies are in place.
  • Store hours are:
  • Mondays: Senior Shopping: 9am to 11am
  • Mondays: Public Shopping: 11am to 4pm
  • Tuesdays: 9am to 4pm
  • Wednesdays: 9am to 4pm
  • Thursdays: 9am to 6pm - open late!
  • Fridays: 9am to 4pm
  • Saturdays: 9am to 4pm
  • Sundays: closed
  • The last store entry will be at 3:30pm daily except Thursdays
  • Thursday last entry is 5:30pm
  • With the likelihood of lines outside our building, and to avoid confusion in exiting, we suggest shoppers park in the public parking lot across Industrial Drive from Jonnycake. Shoppers are not allowed to enter or exit through our donation processing area.
  • A limited number of shoppers are allowed in the Jonnycake Center of Westerly’s Thrift Store at one time. This number includes children and everyone in your party. We request that shopping trips are made solo, or with only one other person. If the store is full, arriving shoppers will be asked to wait outside.
  • To gain entry to our building, everybody must wear a face mask that covers your mouth and nose. Face shields (without a face mask) cannot be accepted. No exceptions can be made to this policy. Shoppers who are unable to wear a face mask can contact the Store to receive alternate means of assistance.
  • Jonnycake staff will greet you at the door to take your forehead temperature and ask a few questions about your recent health and risk factors. Answering these questions is essential to protecting our on-site Food Pantry, as well as the health of fellow shoppers, volunteers, and Jonnycake staff.
  • Please follow the one-way arrows in our aisles and maintain 6-foot social distancing spacing when shopping.
  • Follow the Jonnycake Facebook page to see daily discounts, surprise sales, and early access to certain treasures.

  • Only sellable-condition furniture (without rips, stains, claw marks, etc.) can be picked up via the Jonnycake truck. Please see above for how to donate household goods.
  • Please never leave (“dump”) donations on our entryways after-hours. Doing so is a punishable offense due to the fire and safety hazard it presents to our staff and volunteers.
  • All proceeds from Thrift sales directly support our Food Pantry and Social Services basic needs efforts.
VOLUNTEERING:
  • To minimize the number of people in our building, limited opportunities are available to volunteer at Jonnycake.
  • To be added to the volunteering interest waitlist, please email Volunteer@jonnycake.org.
  • Special thanks to the volunteers from United Way of Rhode Island who helped tend to the Jonnycake Community Garden in Charleston back in September! These volunteers were instrumental in prepping the garden for fall and winter.
FUNDRAISING:
  • The Jonnycake Center of Westerly is following mandates limiting the number of people who can gather at one time. As a result, we had to make the difficult decision to postpone most of our public event fundraising initiatives for the remainder of 2020.
  • Visit our website jonnycake.org often and make sure you follow us on social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for when we announce alternative means of hosting fundraisers.
  • To make a financial contribution in lieu of attending a Jonnycake event, please email Bambi Poppick, Development Director, at bpoppick@jonnycake.org or call our donation line at (401) 315-4584.
  • Click here to make a secure donation via the Jonnycake website.
  • We extend our heartfelt thanks to every person who has financially supported Jonnycake since March. Your contributions have enabled us to keep feeding families in need and providing critical basic needs services.
  • Browse the latest news on our website to find announcements of some of the wonderful support received from community partners and foundations.
ADOPT-A-FAMILY SIGNUPS OPEN!
  • The Jonnycake Social Services department is gearing up for our 2020 Adopt-a-Family holiday gift drive program.
  • In 2019, nearly 600 local underserved children received presents and gifts thanks to this program. With more families than ever facing unprecedented challenges in 2020, the need is even greater for a well-funded, well-executed gift drive this holiday season.
  • In accordance with public health measures, we unfortunately cannot accept and process physical toys and gifts this year on the scale needed for the program to be successful. We also cannot host the large groups on-site who ordinarily would sort and pack the presents.
  • As a result, the 2020 Adopt-a-Family program will offer financial support for struggling families. Disbursements will be offered to clients in an equivalent amount of the value of the presents that families would normally receive.
  • Financial support distributions will take place Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15, giving families ample time to apply funds toward holiday presents.
  • Support is also available for clients to be able to procure traditional Thanksgiving and/or holiday dinners.
  • To sign up as a Donor who can help with gifts or meals, please call Lee Eastbourne, Jonnycake Executive Director, at (401) 377-8069, ext. 106, or email leastbourne@jonnycake.org by October 30.
  • To register as a family in need of presents or holiday food, call Jonnycake Social Services at (401) 377-8069 and select Option 1. Adoptees can also email Sarah Cote, Social Services Program Director, at scote@jonnycake.org. Registration closes October 30!
