Greens Bayou Coalition partnered with North Houston District to restore a portion of the trail system along Greens Bayou this August by way of a sizeable grant from Halliburton. Check out the story from Colleen Gilbert, Executive Director of GBC.

Melissa Sowell, Community Relations Manager at Halliburton, and Colleen Gilligan Gilbert, Executive Director with Greens Bayou Coalition, had the opportunity to go out with Bart Baker, Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer, and Asdrubal "Dru" Gutierrez, Field Services Director, of North Houston District to see some of the restoration firsthand.

Last October GBC was thrilled to receive a sizeable grant from Halliburton designated for use on parks & trails and programs in the North/West Reach of the Greens Bayou Watershed. We've been applying some of the funding towards bayou cleanups and tree plantings and have reserved a portion for our Kayaking for Kids program. But we wanted to use a sizeable chunk of the funding for parks and/or trails in the area. We were excited when the North Houston District reached out to us regarding a project. Areas of well-used Hike & Bike trails along either side of the Greens Bayou, roughly between Knobcrest Drive and Hardy Toll Road, had been destroyed as Harris County Flood Control District completed work on construction of Glen Forest Storm Water Detention Basin and its related outfalls. This costly repair project has been on the North Houston District to-do list for some time and was the perfect place to invest Halliburton dollars.

Benmar Construction Update
Benmar Drive is a prominent thoroughfare in the Northeast Quadrant of the North Houston District, and the intersection of Benmar Drive and Greenspoint Drive serves a hub of dining and retail options near CityNorth. There is just one problem – the corner is tight. It’s so tight that METRO buses and delivery trucks have a hard time making the turn, and it’s resulted in broken curbs with muddy ruts.
The District, in coordination with TIRZ 11, City of Houston, METRO and several other partnering agencies, devised a plan to widen the intersection. It took acquiring a sliver of private property and then turning it over to City of Houston as right-of-way. Now that the paperwork is done, construction bids are underway. Travelers should expect to see a construction zone over the next few months. Once completed, the corner at Benmar and Greenspoint will be widened, crosswalks repaired, and the intersection revived. Please stay tuned and follow us on social media for updates.

Greens Road Project Continues
Since October 2020, the City of Houston has been working on a sewer infrastructure project that runs along Greens Road, causing traffic in the area.
According to Houston Public Works, construction near Tom Wussow Park is complete. Progress has slowed but is ongoing. Once the sewer project is complete, enhanced pedestrian crosswalks are planned at Greens Road and Imperial Valley.
