Ensuring a Resilient Norfolk

On June 12, the City of Norfolk signed a Project Partnership Agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to move the Resilient Norfolk Coastal Storm Risk Management project forward.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provides this $399 million in funding for the project to increase coastal resilience and reduce our flood risk.

For the fifth straight year, Norfolk ranked number one for sea level rise on the East Coast, increasing our risk for flooding and damage due to hurricanes, nor'easters and other significant storms.

This project includes storm-surge barriers, floodwalls, levees, tide gates, pump stations and nonstructural features including home elevations, basement fills and commercial floodproofing.

For more information on the Norfolk Coastal Storm Risk Management Project, visit ResilientNorfolk.com.

Swim Lessons for All

With water surrounding our city, learning water safety skills is essential for all ages.

Our Department of Parks & Recreation offers parent and child aquatics classes to introduce children to swimming and water safety skills that are developmentally appropriate.

Tools to Keep You Safe

Hurricanes and summer storms can bring troubles on the road. Be sure you never drive through flooded streets - check the STORM Map to identify real-time flooded streets before you leave home.

Already on the road? Use the Waze app. Through a partnership with Floodmapp, Waze provides pop-up icons and audio alerts to warn of flooded streets along your route.

Enhancing the Fleet

Norfolk Fire-Rescue welcomes two new medic trucks, which will help increase the quality of medical assistance provided to our residents.

Station 6 now has its first medical vehicle that will bridge the downtown service gap, making it the last Norfolk fire station to have its own truck. Station 14 received a new truck to replace an aging unit in order to provide better care in the Norview area.

Grow, Mow & Mulch

According to the Virginia Cooperative Extension, the average lawn is mowed about once a week over the summer.

Before cutting the grass, remember it's illegal to blow clippings into the right-of-way. Grass clippings create a slick surface that's dangerous to motorcyclists and bicyclists. It can also clog stormwater drains and contaminate our waterways. Find tips on how to be a part of the pollution solution and remember, only rain goes down the storm drain!
