First United Weekly Newsletter

February 29, 2024

Our Vision Statement:

We are a welcoming community FIRST UNITED in proclaiming FAITH in Jesus Christ, sharing HOPE for the future, and inspiring LOVE of our neighbors.

Need Some Extra Support?

Spend some time with us this morning (2/29) at 10am for the our monthly Woe-Be-Gone Gathering in the Koinonia Lounge. We'd love to have you join us for this supportive time as we read scripture, share, pray, and listen to one another. Everyone's invited!

Change for the Divas

Please note that the Dining Divas dinner scheduled for this evening has been cancelled. Be sure to watch for the latest update on plans for their March gathering in next week's newsletter. Sorry for any inconvenience.

Plans for Sunday Worship

Join us for the third Sunday in Lent as we celebrate the Lord's Supper and our continuing 175th Anniversary Jubilee. This week we'll focus on scripture readings from Exodus 20:1-17 and John 2:13-22 (click for links), and we'll learn how Jesus is passionate about God's house and yours.

> This week our Joyful Noise group will be leading us in "10,000 Reasons" and "House of the Lord." Click titles for video links to help you become more familiar with the songs. Service recordings are available on our website and Facebook page about an hour after the service is completed (*find links at end).

Sunday School for All Ages at 10:30am

With the start of a new month, we ask for all kids, youth, and the adults who bring them to meet first for "Families and Faith at First United" in the Gathering Area near the coffee shop at 10:30am. We'll talk about Holy Week and Easter and then break up into our regular separate classes.

*Adult Class

This Sunday we'll be kicking off our new study of This We Believe: Eight Truths Presbyterians Affirm. In this course, we'll explore the basics of the Christian faith based on the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and the Christian Reformed tradition. This class is for those just beginning their faith and those interested in a refresher course. Join us in the Koinonia Lounge at 10:30 am.

Youth Group Update

> It's the first Sunday of the month, and that means it's time for our monthly Youth Coffee Shop & Bake Sale after church. Proceeds help support the youth and their activities and events including their summer trip to The Great Escape. Youth and their families, please let Scott McPherson or Pastor Meggan know if you are bringing a baked good or can help sell.

> Sunday evening (3/3) from 6-7:30pm, our Youth Group will gather again downstairs in the Youth Media Room for their normal Sunday evening time together. Join us!

Book Study Continues

Our special Lenten Book Study of The Prodigal God will continue tonight (2/29) at 7pm. The study is offered two times each week - Wednesdays at 11am and Thursdays at 7pm. Contact Pastors Luke or Meggan (see email links below) if you have questions.

Reformers Return

Join our Dead Reformers Society on Tuesday (3/5) at 7pm. This month, our topic will be "Fun Facts about Funerals." Dawn Picard will lead us through some facts, traditions, and oddities involved in helping our dearly departed rest in peace, plus some new trends in saying "good bye." Come join all our regulars at our new location - Badger State Brewing (990 Tony Canadeo Run, G.B.) near Lambeau Field.

Double the Love in March!

We'll have two chances to share the love during March. Our Agape Drive-Thru Dinner is set for Wednesday (3/6) at 5:45pm. The menu will include goulash, salad, bread, and a Lucky Charms/Rice Crispy bar. Also, mark your calendar for Saturday (3/23), when you're invited to our quarterly "In-House" Agape Dinner in our Family Life Center. Watch for more details about this Irish-themed dinner soon. Be sure to invite all your friends to both events.

Our 175th Jubilee Celebration Continues!

This Sunday, as we enter a new month, we'll be sharing a special look back at a new section of our history - 1889 through 1949 - and singing more verses of our anniversary hymn personalized by Rita Kilmer!

> Sunday after worship, watch for some more of our old church photos for you to look through and help identify. We'll be setting them out every Sunday with hopes that you can help add some names or dates.

> Don't forget, we're still seeking your best recipes to create a Church Family Cookbook to be completed in time to be used as Christmas gifts! Please contact Jen Van De Hei (920-660-0921) with information or questions.

> We continue looking for church history treasures to share. We'd love to borrow any old church-related photos, documents, videos, or other special memories you have. We promise to be very careful, make copies, and return them safely.

*Contact Mark Young (*see Communications email link below) with any ideas or questions about all the church history materials we're collecting.

> The P.W. Talbot Circle Gathering will take place two weeks from today - Thursday (3/14) at noon - in the Koinonia Lounge.

Uplifting Video Featuring a Friend

The area Y.M.C.A., with the help of Bellin College, provides some very important support to many of our neighbors. Please click HERE for a link to a YouTube video featuring one of our own church family members along with others benefiting from the special program!

Was it Chili for You Last Saturday?

The return of our Chili Cook-Off Event was a tasty success last Saturday evening (2/24). Everyone who came enjoyed lots of favorite chili recipes and lots of raffle prizes from lots of area restaurants. If you haven't already heard, Co-Pastor Meggan Farwell won the Golden Ladle during the 10th year of our fun event. She also became our 3rd two-time winner. Congratulations!

Are You Up-to-Date?

We're trying to update all of our church family contact information for all our church records. If you weren't at the Annual Meeting when we filled out paper forms, please help us. You can find the forms at the Welcome Desk at church or you can click HERE to find an electronic form. Please fill one out for each family member and return them to the office. Thanks in advance for helping us keep our information up-to-date!

Mark Your Calendar!

Save the date for this year's Vacation Bible School! It's planned for this summer from Sunday, July 21 through Thursday, July 25. Our VBS will take place in the mornings, and our theme this year will be "Scuba Diving into Friendship with God." Watch for details!
