The Industrial Athlete. HEALTHY BACKS & BODIES™ for Prevention and Performance

Tanya (Weiker) Snowden, PT, CEAS, AOEAS, Back Health Specialist

What if you could eliminate back pain and prevent injuries (MSD's and RSI's) before they ever happen?

With the right tips, tools and exercises - you can. It simply takes knowledge and commitment.

Join us as we delve into the essentials of safe, efficient, healthy movement. This is not your typical "lift with  your legs and not with your back" body mechanics training class. HEALTHY BACKS &  BODIES™ for The  Industrial Athlete is an innovative, fun, fast-paced, experiential workshop founded upon the science and the  knowledge of the Orthopedic Physical Therapy profession. Learning the tricks of the trade, we'll work with the  fundamental underlying movements threaded throughout all proper CORE™ Body Mechanics, as well as an  arsenal of tips & tools for each specific action (IE. Lifting, Reaching...). We'll highlight those 'last-minute  wrong movements' that often lead to injury, as we provide you with the empowerment of 'feeling' and  immediately integrating, a new sense of proper body movement, placement and mechanics. In mastering this,  you and your body will truly 'get' how to protect your back, your joints and your muscles. This enlightening  approach is energizing work forces and improving employee health and performance for forward-thinking  companies and institutions across North America.

Meet your back's new best friend, Tanya (Weiker) Snowden. Tanya is the HEALTHY BACKS & BODIES™ Program Creator, Master Instructor, Safety Consultant, and Back Health Specialist. She is an Orthopedic Physical Therapist, Certified Ergonomics Assessment Specialist, Advanced Office Ergonomics Assessment Specialist, and MFR Clinician who is a patented inventor of the TheraBand® CLX, as well as a published author. "Much of today's back pain and injury could be prevented and more successfully treated, if only people knew and understood their backs, their bodies, and the underlying mechanics innate to their own safe, healthy, efficient movement - and, then felt empowered to take action." This is Tanya Snowden's strong conviction. And this, coupled with an intense drive to reach a larger audience and to do so before the experience of pain and/or injury, is what catapulted her out of the clinical setting and into the educational arena. HEALTHY BACKS & BODIES™ - her training outreach - is the culmination of 25 years of hands-on treating, clinical insight, scientifically-sound strategies, and thousands of hours of clinical, corporate and consumer teaching. She teaches and consults with the belief and passion that can only come from an authentic love for the subject matter and from one who lives it every day.

Q:  How can we prevent slips and falls in winter?

A: Follow these 10 tips to make sure you're staying safe            when walking around in snowy and icy conditions:
        • Walk slowly and carefully. Wear boots or other slip-resistant footwear
        • Use special care when getting in and out of vehicles. Use the vehicle for support if you need to do so
        • Watch for slippery floors when you enter any building or home
  • Try to avoid carrying items or walking with you hands in your pockets; this can reduce your ability to catch yourself if you lose your balance. Instead, carry a backpack if you have one
  • Watch out for black ice
  • Tap your foot on potentially slick areas to see if the areas are slippery
  • Turn your feet slightly outwards and keep as flat-footed as possible
  • Avoid uneven surfaces if possible. Avoid steps or curbs with ice on them
  • Report any untreated surfaces to maintenance and/or facilities
  • Remember, ice and snow mean "take it slow!"

Is Your Vehicle Prepared for Winter?

Winter  driving conditions also mandate driving differently. This  winter , make sure  your car  is as  prepared  as you are. Going  the  extra mile by getting  your vehicle ready for winter  and learning what it takes to drive safely through ice and snow could save  your  life. Follow these tips to learn about winter driving risks and prepare an emergency kit for your car.
