It's Back-to-School Time!

In the blink of an eye, summer is over and it's Back-to-School time! New faces, tracking down immunization records and emergency action plans, training staff, and so much more. Every year, it seems impossible, yet somehow every year school nurses get it done!

This issue includes resources for school nurses to learn more about certain health conditions, access available programs, and recognize monthly observances. How fitting that August is National Immunization Awareness Month - as school nurses, we protect the health of our students, our campus, and our community by requiring students to have an immunization record on file and be as up-to-date as possible prior to starting school.

If you're brand-new to school nursing and feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone! Even the most seasoned school nurses can distinctly recall the feeling from their early years in the specialty. Reach out to your fellow colleagues in your district, your region, and throughout the state on TSNO's message board. If you're a seasoned school nurse, use the link below to share a few words of encouragement.

With the TSNO Conference around the corner, this is a great time to consider running for a position on the Board of Directors. Believe it or not, it's not always as much work as you might think. If you have questions or are interested, please reach out with questions. We'd love to have you "get on Board."

Wishing you all a safe and healthy school year!

SHARE YOUR WISDOM

School nursing is a nursing specialty like no other. Serving as the bridge between a student's health and education, we impact students' learning and attendance, and in doing so have a profound influence on their futures. There's a steep learning curve, though! Navigating healthcare in an educational environment. Adjusting to autonomous practice. So many new acronyms! Keeping track of immunization records, action plans, and forms. Learning to investigate if that 'tummy ache' is medical or emotional. Creating a workflow.

What do you wish you knew during your first year? How do you manage all the things at once? Does it ever get easier? When did you know you were going to make it? How do you stay connected to your WHY? What is the most rewarding aspect of your work?

Leave a few tips, tricks, or words of encouragement for our newest colleagues. We'll share your input in social media and future newsletters.

DETAILS and REGISTRATION

AUGUST AWARENESS AND OBSERVANCES

National Immunization Awareness Month

National Immunization Awareness Month, held annually in August, highlights the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. With few exceptions, Texas requires students to be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable diseases.

School nurses help keep their students, families, and communities safe by keeping track of student immunization records, educating families and connecting them to resources to get their students vaccinated.

Children's Eye Health and Safety Month

August is Children's Eye Health and Safety Month. This is a great time to educate parents and students about the important role of vision and eye health in a student's development, learning ability, and social engagement.

Texas school nurses can profoundly impact the life of a child through early identification of vision difficulty. You can educate yourself and your community about the signs of possible vision problems in children, as well as a checklist for parents. CLICK HERE to download resources in English and Spanish.

International Overdose Awareness Day

August 31: No one should stand alone in the fight to end overdose. Not people who use drugs, not friends and family, not activists, advocates, or healthcare workers. A unified community effort is necessary, but Together We Can!

School nurses should be knowledgeable about evidence-based strategies for overdose prevention and response, not just for illicit fentanyl but for all substances with potential for overdose. CLICK HERE for fact sheets about other drugs and how the body responds.
