HANWASH is fundraising for Cash and Rotary DDF donations to help the commune of Leogane!
The commune of Leogane has a rich and unique culture, offering much in the way of arts, music, literature, cuisine, and architecture.
What solutions are envisioned? Since 2018, the Rotary Club of Leogane has worked closely with the utility operator, CTE, providing support for pump repair, motorcycles for monitoring water points, collecting payments from clients, and fuel purchases. With this US$385,000 Global Grant, new investments would be made in a hybrid electric (solar and commercial AC) pump, repair of leaking water pipes, inspections and repairs as needed for water meters and valves, cleaning of a current water tank, collection of monitoring and evaluation data, improved security system, and management training. By providing better service, revenues should increase, and with solar power operations will be more environmentally friendly too.
With initial capital costs covered by Rotarian, club, and district donations to this Grant, the Leogane Municipal Water System Operator will be able to provide clean drinking water to their customers at an affordable rate that covers operations, maintenance, repairs and replacement costs.
It is essential to keep clean water clean, so this project will include sanitation and hygiene training for the community starting with schools to reach children and social media to reach adults in the community.
The Rotary Club of Leogane is well-regarded in the community with a long history of philanthropy and service, which can help bring citizens, municipal government, and financial/technical partners to the table for dialogue and decisions. This important part of our project infuses ownership of the project by the local Leogane residents.
If your Rotary Club would like to contribute cash or your District has extra District Designated Funds (DDF) that you could donate towards this Global Grant we would very much appreciate it and would put it to great use!
For District contributions, you may forward this email to your Area or District Governor and ask if your District Rotary Foundation Committee chair is aware of any DDF that can be contributed to this Grant. That would be a great first step!
We have raised $275,000 and have $110,000 to go. Our goal is $385,000. Please help us continue our mission - to bring clean water and sanitation to the people of Haiti.

Rotary District 6840 Southeast Louisiana, South Mississippi
HANWASH Executive Director Ryan Rowe recently attended the District 6840 Conference, he received a $45,000 check from the district to cover some of our most strategic investments to support HANWASH in Haiti, in addition to a contribution of $35,000 for our next Global Grant project in the city of Leogane. With the usual contributions offered by our matching donors, this brings D6840’s financial impact to $144,000 in a single Rotary year. Thank you District Governor Vicky, and to your clubs for your stunning generosity and support to Haiti during this fragile time.

Bob Hobaugh, a member of District 7430 and the HANWASH Steering Committee, spoke with nearly 100 people about the work of HANWASH as a program manager through Rotary Global Grants as weel as through the Adopt-a-Well program.
People learned about the need for clean water in Haiti, and the benefits of our commune action plan, turning a project into a program.

At the recent Rotary District 6290 Conference, HANWASH co-founder John Smarge spoke about HANWASH methodology, the status of several ongoing projects in Haiti, and the significant disruption in the country because of city rule by gangs. Of note, he pointed out that a new provisional government is restoring order.
As to What Makes HANWASH Different?, John said,
“It begins with our systematic technically driven approach to gathering current data through community assessments, creating local, socially driven solutions, that result in a commune action plan.”
“He also emphasized that while there is significant disruption concentrated Port-au-Prince due to organized crime, other parts of the country continue to function and HANWASH can still get work done.”

HANWASH FEATURED AT DISTRICT 7020
CREATE HOPE 2024, PETS, ASSEMBLY & CONFERENCE
Rotarians and Rotaractors from 10 countries around the Northern Caribbean gathered together for 5 days in Grand Cayman, April 29-May 4, at the District 7020 Conference convened by DG David Kirkaldy. Threaded throughout every session, was the theme for the year – Create Hope, presented by individuals and in panel discussions... Hope for help with mental illness; Hope for peace in the world; Hope for Haiti.
Haiti. We are used to seeing over 100 attendees each year visiting from all over that island. This year, many wanted to come but it was impossible to arrange the flights. However, they still had a high profile presence - led by DGE Dominique Bazin and Fritz Pierre-Louis, the Haitian contingent took the stage to thunderous applause and cheers from the entire assembly.
Hanwash was a highly visible presence throughout, with a booth gathering donations in return for a Hanwash pin and cellphone wallet and a cadre of persons answering questions and handing out fliers. On stage, Executive Director Ryan Rowe and Steering Committee Chair Fritz Pierre-Louis gave an impactful overview of the aims, successes – and challenges – experienced under the current situation and together, they provoked a huge amount of interest in the programme.
So now, on to next year. Haiti should have been the venue but due to the uncertainty of the situation next year, DGE Dominique is arranging a cruise instead, with long lines of Rotarians signing up.
Hope was definitely created at this year’s event, with the promise of that Hope bearing fruit throughout District 7020 and beyond.

HANWASH fait une collecte de fonds pour les dons Cash et Rotary DDF pour aider la commune de Léogane !
La commune de Léogâne possède une culture riche et unique, offrant de nombreux arts, musique, littérature, cuisine et architecture.
Quelles solutions sont envisagées ? Depuis 2018, le Rotary Club de Léogâne travaille en étroite collaboration avec l'opérateur de services publics CTE, en fournissant un soutien pour la réparation des pompes, des motos pour surveiller les points d'eau, la collecte des paiements des clients et les achats de carburant. Avec cette subvention mondiale de 385 000 $ US, de nouveaux investissements seraient réalisés dans une pompe hybride électrique (solaire et AC commerciale), la réparation des conduites d'eau qui fuient, les inspections et réparations nécessaires pour les compteurs d'eau et les vannes, le nettoyage d'un réservoir d'eau actuel, la collecte des déchets. données de suivi et d’évaluation, système de sécurité amélioré et formation en gestion. En fournissant un meilleur service, les revenus devraient augmenter et, grâce à l'énergie solaire, les opérations seront également plus respectueuses de l'environnement.
Avec les coûts d'investissement initiaux couverts par les dons des Rotariens, des clubs et des districts à cette subvention, l'opérateur du système d'eau municipal de Léogane sera en mesure de fournir de l'eau potable à ses clients à un tarif abordable couvrant les coûts d'exploitation, d'entretien, de réparation et de remplacement.
Il est essentiel de garder l'eau potable propre, c'est pourquoi ce projet comprendra une formation en matière d'assainissement et d'hygiène pour la communauté, en commençant par les écoles pour atteindre les enfants et les médias sociaux pour atteindre les adultes de la communauté.
Le Rotary Club de Léogâne est bien considéré dans la communauté avec une longue histoire de philanthropie et de service, ce qui peut aider à amener les citoyens, le gouvernement municipal et les partenaires financiers/techniques à la table pour le dialogue et les décisions. Cette partie importante de notre projet insuffle l'appropriation du projet par les résidents locaux de Léogâne.

District Rotary 6840 Sud-Est de la Louisiane, Sud du Mississippi
Le directeur exécutif de HANWASH, Ryan Rowe, a récemment assisté à la conférence du district 6840. HANWASH EN VEDETTE AU DISTRICT 7020. CREATE HOPE 2024, ANIMAUX DE COMPAGNIE, ASSEMBLÉE & CONFÉRENCE
Rotariens et Rotaractiens de 10 pays du nord des Caraïbes se sont réunis pendant 5 jours à Grand Cayman, du 29 avril au 4 mai, lors de la conférence du district 7020 convoquée par le directeur général David Kirkaldy. Le thème de l'année – Créer de l'espoir, présenté tout au long de chaque séance, présenté par des particuliers et lors de tables rondes... L'espoir et l'aide en cas de maladie mentale ; Espoir de paix dans le monde ; Espoir pour Haïti.
Haïti. Nous sommes habitués à voir chaque année plus de 100 participants venus de toute l’île. Cette année, beaucoup voulaient venir mais il était impossible d'organiser les vols. Cependant, leur présence était toujours très visible : dirigé par le DGE Dominique Bazin et Fritz Pierre-Louis, le contingent haïtien est monté sur scène sous les applaudissements et les acclamations de toute l'assemblée.
Hanwash était une présence très visible tout au long, avec un stand rassemblant des dons en échange d'un pin's Hanwash et d'un portefeuille pour téléphone portable et un groupe de personnes répondant aux questions et distribuant des dépliants. Sur scène, le directeur exécutif Ryan Rowe et le président du comité directeur Fritz Pierre-Louis ont donné un aperçu percutant des objectifs, des succès – et des défis – rencontrés dans la situation actuelle et, ensemble, ils ont suscité un énorme intérêt pour le programme.
Alors maintenant, place à l'année prochaine. Haïti aurait dû être le lieu de l'événement, mais en raison de l'incertitude de la situation l'année prochaine, le DGE Dominique organise une croisière à la place, avec de longues files de Rotariens s'inscrivant.
L’espoir a définitivement été créé lors de l’événement de cette année, avec la promesse que cet espoir porterait ses fruits dans tout le district 7020 et au-delà.
