Dear Genesee Hill community,

It’s hard to believe we're a few months out from the end of school. As always we enjoy seeing many of you out and about at school events and in the community overall.

We look forward to seeing you at next month's general membership meeting (Tuesday, June 20 at the school), where a major agenda item will be the approval of the 2023-2024 PTA budget.

As we've discussed over the past few months, the budget challenges faced by the Seattle School District will have an impact on every school in the district. In consultation with the budget committee and school leadership, the PTA board will present a budget to you that responds to those challenges. We are planning informational sessions for general membership prior to June's meeting, so look for dates soon.

School funding, both at the state level and at the district level, will present challenges to Genesee Hill and other schools over the next few years. And while our community is generous, even we can not fill the gaps that will be created. Now, more than ever, this creates a great opportunity for our community to come together and support our kids. Leveraging our voice in Olympia and with the school board to ensure adequate funding for public education is essential and is our responsibility as parents and community members. We will be working diligently next year to organize opportunities for our community to advocate for our students.

Another important commitment we can make to help fill these gaps is by devoting our time as volunteers to support the Genesee Hill staff, teachers, and students. As your PTA we will help organize all the ways to engage and be a part of your child’s experience at Genesee Hill.

In addition to the important work outlined above, this year is also critical, as our Building Leadership Team (BLT) is working to develop Genesee Hill’s 2023-2026 Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP). For those of you who don’t know, the CSIP is an action plan for our school that identifies the areas our school plans to focus on in the next two school years, the performance goals we as a school want our students to achieve, and how we plan to collaboratively meet those goals. This document also outlines a Family Engagement Plan. As your PTA presidents, we help represent each of you on the BLT and we help bring the student and family voice to this process. And while we have worked hard to explore what strong family and school partnerships looks like this year, we ask ourselves what does Family Engagement look like to you?

Please let us know your thoughts. We encourage great conversations over this next month as we ask ourselves this important question and we hope to hear your ideas.

As always, thank you for your time and commitment to our kids and our community at Genesee Hill and West Seattle at large. We are excited to celebrate our Teachers with you this coming week at Teacher Appreciation Week!

In community,

Michael and Lia, PTA co-presidents

Volunteer for Teacher Appreciation Week

The Genesee Hill PTA has planned a full agenda for Teacher Appreciation Week (May 8-12), and even kids can get involved by bringing a flower, homemade card, or homemade gift to school on May 8.

We're recruiting volunteers to help coordinate the events listed below. Just pick the level of participation that’s best for you. The PTA will fill in the gaps to honor our school staff, from grade level teachers to administration.

Here’s how you can help give our teachers the extra credit they deserve:

Monday, May 8: Flowers & homemade gifts

All are invited to send their students to school with flowers, homemade cards, or other homemade gifts or drawings for their teachers. To coordinate the effort, we need volunteers to collect the gifts before school starts. Sign up here

Tuesday, May 9: Coffee day

Every teacher, specialist, and staffer will receive a drink of their choice from Hotwire Coffeehouse, courtesy of the PTA. 1-2 volunteers are needed to unload the coffee order before school starts. Sign up here

Wednesday, May 10: Sweets and treats

Drop off homemade or store-bought baked goods at the front of the school, before school starts. They’ll be distributed in the teacher’s lounge. Sign up here

Thursday, May 11: Snacks for teachers

Drop off snacks and finger foods at the front of the school before school starts, for distribution in the teacher’s lounge. Sign up here

Friday, May 12: Potluck for teachers

Drop off a dish or beverage at the front of the school before school starts, and contribute to a lunchtime potluck for staff. Sign up here

Volunteer of the Month: Kathe Dizard

It is such a treat to volunteer at Genesee Hill. My name is Kathe Dizard and I’m grandmother to Lily, in Mrs. Frazier’s third grade and Louis, in Mr. Washington’s kindergarten. I’m so lucky to have my two children live in the Genesee service area and all four of my grandchildren have, and will, attend Genesee Hill.

We are longtime West Seattle residents. It all started with my grandparents. They lived in a brick triplex that is still located on 35th way back in the fifties. I worked in the Kent School district for over thirty years as a classroom teacher. The best part of my career was working with children. That’s why I enjoy volunteering in the classroom, lunchroom and library. Lots of opportunities to help out.

Along with my two children and their children, I have a husband, Bob and two cats, Stormy and Ernie and a darling parti poodle named Poppy. In the past, I have volunteered at the animal shelter and been a lake monitor on Lake Meridian in Kent. My husband and I live on Bainbridge Island where we like to walk and help with beach cleanup projects. It is a lovely place to live with lots of time to view birds and wildlife.

I feel very lucky to be part of two wonderful communities. I love the walkability of West Seattle and how there are so many lovely homes that are so unique. It’s close to Lincoln Park and Alki, both wonderful places to enjoy a meal or walk. I look forward to many more years volunteering at Genesee Hill!
