Captain's Corner
Written by Captain Kevin Deerman
It sounds like the spring bite is on! The "Iron Crown" took the lead in the Wahoo category last month and they now have the top Yellowfin Tuna as well with a 158 pounder. We just had another good weather window and the boats that made it out all reported great catches. The "Nunzio" released a Blue Marlin estimated over 600 pounds, "Doctor's Note" released 2 Blues and "Big Torch" also released 2 nice Blues and a Sailfish. All of the boats were able to get into the Yellowfin Tuna with a couple of them breaking the 100 pound mark. Please don't forget to tip your Weighmasters, they are providing their services as a favor to our members.

The Learning Curve
Submitted by Captain Troy Day
With tournament season fast approaching and everyone gearing up, let's look at line breaking strength. Since some of the tournaments are fully IGFA rules and others have a clause requiring IGFA tackle (meaning a breaking strength under 130lbs), we need to know the actual breaking strength (ABS) of our mainlines, including backing (which also has to break under 130lbs). With the popularity of Spectra and its tendency to over-test (unlike Dacron which breaks almost exactly at labeled strength) here's a link to a guy in Australia who has tested most brands and strengths of Spectra out there. Check out what you're using:
Paulus Line Testing.
One of the more popular monofilament line brands is Momoi, of which there are 2 main types, Hi-Catch and Hi-Catch Diamond. 80lbs Hi-Catch breaks at 110lbs, while 100lbs Hi-Catch breaks at 124lbs, just under IGFA legal. Hi-Catch Diamond over-tests even more than that, with 80lbs actually breaking at 122lbs, 100lbs breaking at 152lbs, and 130lbs breaking at 244lbs!
With the line question coming up at captains' meetings several times over the last couple years, make sure you do your research before you spool up this season if you're going to fish any tournaments. Tournament season can't get here fast enough, see ya out there!
