Getting Your Organization Onboard with Fundraising: Weaving a Philanthropic Culture
We may be great at cultivating relationships with our donors but are we equally as great at building and nurturing a philanthropic culture top to bottom in our organizations? And if we are not focusing on this then why are we not? If organizational culture reflects the way an organization operates, and if the unique nature of non-profit organizations is a reliance on philanthropy to fulfill their mission, and if fund development is the engine that drives philanthropy - then why do so many organizations fail to understand the value of understanding how a 'philanthropic' (not fundraising!) culture is crucial to have woven throughout the organization? Why are we relegating ourselves into that dreadful 'silo' and not taking every possible step to increase philanthropic investment in our organization?
WHEN Wednesday, March 18, 2015 12:00 PM - 1:30 PM WHERE Tulsa Area United Way - Bailey Room 1430 S Boulder Ave, Tulsa, OK FEE Brown Bag Lunch - Bring your own. Guest Luncheon: $20.00 Member Luncheon: FREE

Technology Advances & Savings for Nonprofits Provided by 501technet
Today, technology advancements move at the speed of light. Finding a new computer system for your nonprofit can often seem like a daunting task, especially because these technology advancements can often be quite expensive. Tulsa Community Foundation recognized the need nonprofits had for technology advancements so it created 501technet, which provides donor subsidized or partner-discounted technology services and products to eligible nonprofits. In this Tulsa World Article, Mark Whitmire, technologies service director for 501technet explains, ""We can take a 4-year-old PC, refurbish it and charge a nonprofit $80. The market rate for the same computer is $225. Before us, that's what nonprofits would have paid." Whitmire goes on to say, "People in nonprofits are people of heart and passion and want to spend their dollars on their mission. There is dependence between that mission and technology. Our mission is capacity, and technology is the vehicle for accomplishing that." As of August 2014, 501technet provided support to 1,633 computers at 45 organizations in 77 locations and has worked with more than 130 nonprofits. Read more at Tulsa World. Member Spotlight Gerri Inman, J.D.
Gerri A. Inman, J.D., has been the Executive Director of South Tulsa Community House [STCH] for over a year and is a new member to our chapter as of November, 2014. Gerri describes herself as a school "junkie". She has had careers as wholesale nurseryman/master gardener, medical technologist, and CPA primarily in the oil and gas industry. She is a graduate of Langston University at Tulsa and holds a Bachelors in Business Administration/Accounting. After practicing for a few years, she then went to the University of Tulsa College of Law, gained her J.D. in 1995, and practiced for over 17 years. Even with this background and experience, Gerri found herself in poverty and homeless approximately 4 years ago due to chronic physical and mental health issues. For the first time in her life, she needed assistance with just the basic necessities of life. A friend suggested that she volunteer at STCH, which serves the 61st and S. Peoria area. After her first day she was hooked and felt like she had found her true passion in life. After volunteering for 6 months, Gerri applied for and was hired as the new Executive Director. Although STCH had been around for some 20 years, it had always been a part-time social service agency only serving approximately 200 - 300 individuals per month. After much outreach to area apartments, the two elementary schools in the area, as well as just walking and talking with neighbors, STCH started regularly serving 600-700 per month within 6 months of beginning her job. Gerri also added more services based upon neighbor's needs. After being in a 1500 sq. ft. store front space for several years, a new 8,000 square foot facility was purchased just across the street in June, 2014, with move-in completed in December, 2014. Gerri was responsible for gaining over $50,000 in grants her first year on board, assisted in gaining over $400,000 in grants, as well as many new partnerships, many of whom have office space in the new facility, including Emergency Infant Services, free GED classes through Union Public Schools, a case manager from Restore Hope as well as a new computer center where there is one on one assistance in job searching and resume writing. In her spare time, Gerri loves playing with her twin granddaughters, reading and watching movies as well as making fancy cakes for birthdays and other special occasions. *Member Spotlight is a new addition to our newsletter that will feature the professional and personal accomplishments of our members. Congratulations, Chapter!
For the first time ever our chapter has achieved the AFP Friends of Diversity designation, thanks to the hard work of Tish, the Board, and all of our members in 2014! This designation
created by AFP International encourages chapters to perform specific activities designed to increase diversity within fundraising and public awareness of the importance of philanthropy in all cultures. Our addition of the Outstanding Diversity and Inclusion in Philanthropy award at the 2014 National Philanthropy Day Awards Luncheon, and programming throughout the year on topics of diversity and inclusion are examples of how we achieved the Friends of Diversity Designation!
In addition to achieving the Friends of Diversity designation, our chapter has also been awarded Ten Star Gold status for the first time ever! After receiving Ten Star status several times, our chapter went above and beyond last year to secure the advanced achievement of Ten Star Gold! The Ten Star Gold award requires 10 goals (an increase from the four required for the Ten Star award), and six additional optional goals. As a Ten Star Gold chapter, we receive one free webinar, one free AFP membership scholarship to use in our chapter, Recognition at Chapter Presidents Council meeting, a listing in Advancing Philanthropy, a certificate of achievement press release template, and use of the Ten Star Gold logo on our website, in newsletters, and other marketing materials.
Congratulations again, everyone! Together we achieved these awards and should be proud of ourselves!

Dear Eastern Oklahoma AFP Chapter,
February 2015 has been a VERY exciting month for our Eastern Oklahoma chapter! We have been awarded for the first time ever the "Friends of Diversity" designation for our chapter's efforts and inclusion among our communities. In addition to that wonderful recognition, we achieved the Ten Star Gold designation for 2014. This recognition sets us apart from other chapters across the United States as having the best practices in ethical fundraising among our professionals and their organizations. These achievements belong to each of us, but I need to specially recognize the 2014 Chapter Board and Tish Stuart for their efforts in helping to lead us all there.
March Madness and hoping that we all find our pots of gold fill our calendars this month. I hope to see many of you at this week at the Tulsa luncheon on Thursday, March 5th featuring an excellent panel on Diversity & Inclusion with local talents sharing their profession with us. Our Bartlesville network had another successful luncheon last Thursday, Feb. 26th as well. We have two topics a month for luncheon education to choose from within Eastern Oklahoma! The 2015 AFP Chapter Board has added 3 new members to help make our year a success: Kyle Wilkes, Chris Miller, and Hayley St. John. We welcome them with open arms and are excited about the year ahead for our Chapter. Come join us and network with your peers and continue the good work!
Thanks for being a part of our Chapter, and here's wishing your organization finds its pot of gold!
