Milestones & Memories...

Video credit- Inquirer and Mirror

June 10th will be the eighth anniversary of Marine’s devastating 2016 warehouse fire. It started in the Nantucket Island Resorts laundry facility inside a leased portion of Marine’s warehouse. The fire was reported around 10:30pm by a passer-by. Before the fire was extinguished, the building was a total loss. The Nantucket Fire Department, short handed and with distant hydrants, did a miraculous job saving our main building and surrounding houses from damage. Thankfully, the wind was blowing toward the harbor, or there could have been much more devastation. Five 250-gallon propane tanks on the outside of the building could also have exploded. Fortunately, there was no one inside the building at the time and there were no injuries. After the fire, our company worked together with our customers and the community to continue our mission of serving Nantucket. In July 2018, with the opening of the new drive-through facility Marine Home Center was able to expand its assortment, storage capacity, and further improve its service to its customers.

A few days after the fire, a look inside at the damage.

All that remained was the old slab.

BUILDING MATERIALS

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts had over 299 communities adopt the Board of Building Regulations and Standards Stretch Code as of November 16, 2021. Nantucket was one of these municipalities to adopt the change. These changes to building codes have been gradual and Nantucket is about to experience the next tightening of these codes.

On July 1, 2024, an updated Stretch Energy Building Code will go into effect. The update will make the energy code requirements for new buildings and additions more stringent, ultimately making new buildings more energy efficient through tighter building envelope and other requirements.

The primary reason for the changes to the current building code is the federal government wanting to make homes less dependent on fossil fuels.

These rules are governed by a "Home Energy Rating System", or HERS rating. There are many factors that contribute to the total HERS rating. Doors and windows are among many products that will contribute to the overall HERS rating and that’s where Marine can help. Our staff is well-trained to assist you in choosing the best available door and window options for your next project.

In addition to the exterior window and door choices that need scrutiny, there is a growing list of other building materials, such as insulation, house wrap, roof underlayment, etc., that perform a critical part in the building envelope.

Marine Home Center is committed to aligning our inventoried products with the most suitable options to help achieve HERS rating compliance. We look forward to assisting you on your next project.

A Season of Possibilities!

June is when we ease into summer and embrace new experiences. Summers on Nantucket are inspirational. It’s the beginning of the social season, where memories are made. Our lifestyles change and minimal tweaks keep our homes looking fresh and interesting. We enjoy leisurely meals with friends and family and being on vacation at home. Setting a beautiful table lets guests know they are celebrated and sets the stage for memorable conversation. Candlelight makes us linger longer. Move artwork or collections around, change furniture placements, create ambience with a table lamp on a kitchen counter.

  • Start with a color scheme. I love the crispness of green and white; a white orchid in a lightship basket for a centerpiece, oversized green and white dishtowels for napkins paired with placemats made from corn maize and matching napkin rings.
  • Combine old and new. My grandmother’s ornate silver sugar bowl holds an herb plant.
  • Group champagne and water glasses (Housewares) to hold votive candles.
  • Use food, such as fruit and veggies for table “props.”
  • Tuck a sprig of fresh herbs under each napkin ring.
  • For country casual, fill a large white pitcher with wildflowers to complement your table linens.

TOOL TOTES

I was once reprimanded for making too many trips to my truck during the work day. I think the suspicion was that I was going for a nip periodically, but the real reason was that I was fetching tools that my employer did not have. What neither of us had was a handy tote that could be loaded with many of the tools needed for the day, saving the trips.

Most of the major tool brands offer totes that can be permanently loaded with a variety of hand and power tools or loaded from the mother ship with things needed for the job at hand. Milwaukee, DeWalt, and Festool have open-topped carriers that can be locked onto their respective power tool cases for secure transport in the truck or by hand. Crescent and CLC make soft models that stand alone, but share with the others numerous compartments to keep tools organized. I find open topped totes convenient because I can find what I’m looking for at a glance, assuming that I haven’t piled too many things in them.

There are also hard totes from Milwaukee, Festool, and others, good for when the soft sided ones won’t do. Some, for both hard and soft, have partitions and inserts that can be swapped to suit.

When you know what you’ll need at the start of the day, totes can save you many trips to the van, and the chewing out from your boss!
