Update from the President & CEO:

Friends of the Gateway Region,

Nearly every month, our Gateway Region team is out in the national marketplace, telling potential investors and corporate prospects about the opportunities for growing their businesses with the broad pool of talent available here. These conversations are an important part of our marketing efforts, as we work to be in front of companies and share our region’s story.

One emerging opportunity we’re discovering is with data centers. Virginia already hosts about half of existing U.S. facilities. Take a step back, and you’ll see that our Commonwealth’s roughly 150 data centers represent about 35% of all known hyperscale data centers worldwide.

Our open space for expansion puts our region in a perfect position for next-generation investments in this category. Consider this: We already have important elements of that infrastructure in place, including transmission lines, fiber optic capacity and energy production from the nuclear facility in Surry County.

As we close out the 2024 fiscal year, exploring new relationships that could bring data center growth here is a perpetual strategy going into next year. As we continue to meet our five-year strategic metrics, I’m looking forward to exploring this specialty industry for its potential economic impact for our region.
