At last, effective yesterday, Tuesday, June 15, 2021, the State of California has officially re-opened its economy. As of June 15, 2021, the Governor terminated the executive orders that put into place the Stay Home Order and the Blueprint for a Safer Economy. He also phased out the vast majority of executive actions put in place since March 2020 as part of the pandemic response, leaving a subset of provisions that facilitate the ongoing recovery. The Southern California BITA Alliance is excited to announce the commencement of the 2021 Summer Internship with Boudreau Pipeline and Inland Empire Framing. Four BITA graduates will be placed in a six-week paid internship on the jobsite within these two industry sectors. The interns will be introduced to various trades involved with building and developing home communities.

As part of their training, interns will learn from skilled trade craftsmen how to perform difficult tasks in each of these trades, become familiar with safety and a well-maintained jobsite, and how to use special tools and equipment needed for successful installation on the jobsite.

Each intern will be placed with a mentor to assist with simple tasks, and ultimately progress into some of the more intricate tasks as the intern becomes more confident and qualified in their responsibilities.

The California Homebuilding Foundation will supply each intern with a work-ready scholarship to help purchase proper work boots, personal protective equipment, hand-tools, and appropriate work attire, preparing them for their first day on the job site.

Calling All Members - Again!  Yes, you are reading that correctly. On Tuesday, April 27, the City of Laguna Hills decided to delay the Village at Laguna Hills project. Yes, it was late in the night. And yes, the hearing was pushing 7 hours. But the reasons given to delay the vote focused on the council needing more time to study the project! Further, even after the public comments were closed due to no remaining speakers, a council member wanted to hear from more residents who oppose the project, as most of the speakers in attendance were in support. So, after the council decided to delay the hearing until June 24th, they also agreed to re-open the public comment at the next scheduled meeting. The Council is clearly using delay tactics and abusing their power to change the rules and move the goal post in the middle of a public hearing. The council has had years to study the project and speak to the developer, but for some reason has done neither.

The City of Santa Ana discussed a proposed resolution last month looking at a series of goals to combat climate change. As one would imagine, the reso focused on decarbonization, resident health and increasing park land. However, the resolution goes on to state that:

Due to this egregious language, the BIA and its coalition partners opposed the resolution, and asked that this item be tabled. The council agreed to bring the reso back with changes, and the BIA will continue to ensure that outright false language related to housing is not included.

Jamboree Housing Corporation announced today that construction has begun on Ascent, a 57-unit supportive housing community in Buena Park, located in northern Orange County near the Los Angeles County border. Ascent is Jamboree’s first Permanent Supportive Housing community in the City of Buena Park and builds upon the commitment both partners have to address chronic homelessness through the creation of more supportive housing communities. Ascent is Jamboree and the City of Buena Park’s third collaboration to create more affordable housing – Park Landing in 2013 and Clark Commons in 2016 – which provided 140 new apartment homes for working families.
