Steel lumber trees replace wooden ones
As recently as the late 1980's Marine's lumber yard was not paved and was mostly sand packed. Only the right of way was solid pavement. You can see in top picture in the distance over the roof of the old plywood shed, the brand-new steel lumber trees. Later a roof was added as you can see them today. To the right of the construction, you can see the last old lumber tree which went perpendicular to how the new trees were built. The old lumber trees were made from wood and covered by a shingled roof and were always getting repaired for one reason or another. In the bottom picture, you can see the construction of the rack supported building that replaced the old "Plywood Shed" which you can make out in the background. This new building later became the cement and ladder shed after the opening of Marine's new drive-through warehouse in 2018. This new building was on the site of a former residential house that the owner occupied for many years surrounded by the lumber yard.

Summer is finally here and the living is easy, with beach picnics, barbecues on the patio or deck, sharing island life with out-of-town guests, extending evening gatherings around the fire pit, lingering after dinner with casual conversation that lasts until the candles are burned low, giving yourself permission to be lazy. With a little bit of pre-planning you can enjoy the luxury of being on vacation in your own island home. A great way to extend evenings under the stars.
Entertaining island style is casually elegant and so easily achieved when you set the table with placemats and napkins from the new Sferra line. The gray/green sea foam or periwinkle blue are the perfect reflection of the ocean and hydrangeas - just right for a Nantucket setting. For a July 4th party add red with food, like a bowl or cherries or strawberries. For picnics and barbecues I like to elevate everyday items by using them in creative ways. For example, the striped, soft cotton dishtowels make pretty and perfectly practical napkins. Tie each one with elegant ribbon and tuck a sprig of fresh mint under the tie, or pull the towels through the gutsy wooden, knot-shaped napkin rings (Housewares). An easy, affordable detail.

Battery Chargers...
| |
There’s little debate over the convenience of cordless tools, but that convenience depends on good battery management. That, in turn, relies on having enough batteries and chargers to meet the demand of the work to be done. Professional cordless tool kits are generally sold in three configurations: tool only, tool with one battery and charger, or tool with two batteries and charger. The tool only configuration is for buyers who already have an adequate number of batteries and at least one charger. A tool with one battery and charger will get you started, but when that battery is run down, you’ll be out of business until it’s recharged, so it’s not hard to see the benefit of a second battery to use while the first is on the charger. For continuous daily work, more batteries and chargers will keep the tools going with minimal interruptions. Some will wonder why swapping batteries is to be preferred over corded tools, and my answer is that no cords need to be laid out for each tool every morning and rolled up at night, there are fewer tripping hazards on the job site, and there is much less competition for electrical receptacles. More than once I have gone to use a tool only to find that someone had unplugged my cord and replaced it with one for their use. And rolling up a muddy cord on an unimproved job site is no fun.
Batteries and chargers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and capacities. Bigger battery packs mean more run time and power but also take longer to charge. While chargers have evolved along with batteries, reducing charging time, I have yet to see any that I consider truly fast. “Fast” chargers generate more heat, so most (all?) fast chargers include fans. I have visited Milwaukee’s battery lab several times (No Photos, Please!) and I’m impressed with their work to analyze them in the pursuit of efficiency and safety. Both batteries and chargers are equipped with circuitry that controls the charging process to prevent overcharging and overheating, and the tools themselves are likewise equipped to monitor battery performance during use. That said, I still can’t bring myself to leave them going overnight even though it’s considered to be okay. Not all batteries are created equal, witness some devastating fires started by off-brand batteries in e-bikes and such. A good reason to stick with the major manufacturers.
So… once you’ve decided how many batteries you need, you may want chargers that do multiples. Some will hold several but only charge them one at a time, only a slight improvement over a single charger. I prefer ones that charge two or more simultaneously, a must for tools that require two batteries to operate. I do have all kinds, though, including one that plugs into a car’s 12V socket.
All of this is simpler than I’ve made it out to be. In more than 20 years I’ve only been caught once without a charged battery, even when I owned just two. With just a little attention, it’s always easy to be ready to go.
