Volunteer Spotlight

This month, we are shining the spotlight on one of our brightest Day "stars", Ms. Marian Nadon!

Marian moved to St. Petersburg in 1966, and lived on a boat with her husband on the St. Pete Marina.

The closest Catholic church at the time happened to be St. Mary’s. Here she got to know the congregation and church leaders very well. After working at the Free Clinic for over ten years and working at their thrift store, Marian began volunteering at Daystar Life Center, where she has been an avid supporter for over 30 years.

Marian retired in 1992, after having raised five children, with the thought that, “now is my time to do volunteer work”. She enjoys “working with people who are working for other people”, giving her a sense of feeling valued and is making a substantial difference in her community.

She is very appreciated at Daystar Life Center by the staff and volunteer team as she is one of the wonderful volunteers that keep our client clothing closet well organized, running smoothly, and effectively at all times.

We are so grateful to Marian for her selflessness, dedication, and long-time support of our mission. You rock, Ms. Marian!

Food Pantry Farm Update

Moons, and Stars, and Watermelons, Oh My!

Many of you may remember watching the solar eclipse back in April. As the moon was blocking out the sun for 4 minutes, our food pantry farm manager, Robin Clemmons, had an awesome idea! Why not plant moon and stars watermelon on the same day as the celestial event?!

And so she did.

Flash forward to July, our moon and stars watermelon are thriving! Each watermelon has a large yellow circle (the moon) and lots of little yellow spots on the skin (the stars). The inside will be your usual juicy red.

We've grown quite a few moon and stars watermelon in the fruit orchard at Daystar since April. All of which goes straight to the community on Thursday mornings. The watermelon pictured above weighs a whopping 13lbs!

Here's how you can help:
