Our Stories Volunteer | Our Work Donate

July, 2024

Dear Friends,

The best stories of impact and the diversity of HVO's activities come from our volunteers’ and partners’ perspective and experiences. This month, I would like to feature some of these stories and individuals, encouraging you all to take a moment and read about the amazing work and accomplishments of our community.

Sincerely,

April

April Pinner, MSPH, RD

Partner Spotlight

Dr. Phuong Nguyen has served as an HVO on-site coordinator for HVO’s dermatology project in Hue, Vietnam, and was awarded a Wyss Scholarship in 2015 to study dermatopathology at Columbia University Medical Center. In 2022 she partnered with HVO volunteer Dr. Mark Koh on the first neonatal dermatology workshop held in Vietnam which was attended by 1200 medical professionals both in-person and virtually. Now, she is hoping to connect HVO and her new institution.

"After the 2022 workshop, the attendants, including both dermatologists and pediatricians, found that the knowledge from that workshop was useful and applicable to their daily work. In addition to that workshop, during the time when I was in Hue, there were several workshops and seminars about dermatoscopy and genital skin disorders with the presence of HVO volunteers. These were also very successful and meaningful to our practice.

We understand the importance of international cooperation which would enhance our practice and improve our health care system. Over the next five years, I hope that HVO will send more doctors to come to my hospital and improve our health care system for the community via clinical visits, workshops, conferences, seminars, and research.

I think it would be great if pediatric dermatologists would get more involved in global health. Pediatric dermatology is a very hard issue, and there aren’t so many people practicing in Vietnam at the moment. However, there are many kids with severe skin problems, especially genetic disorders, who need our care and treatment.

HVO has always been a trustworthy organization that I hope to connect and cooperate with in the near and far future."
